[ He stops mid-shot to roll his eyes again, abandoning the game for a moment to write something on the napkin. This is the worst. Jack, you're the worst. The thing he said wasn't really about Dru at all, though it could easily be interpreted as such. It was more a general commentary on life being short, which he knows all too much about despite being immortal.

He slides over the napkin again.

You can't be afraid of love. ]

if my hands are the color of blood then, baby, I can tell ya love kills.

[ Joe Strummer, not Ramones, not Sex Pistols, but it did feature in that one film about Sid Vicious so maybe it counts. ]

[Life is definitely not short in Jack's case, but the lives of the people he lets himself care about are, so it's a good point to make. It's one he's come back to time after time, alternating between trying to make the most of every moment he's given, and trying not to care because it's always over far too soon.

He reads the napkin and smiles ruefully.]

Yeah. I know. Love is - well, all that stuff about it being a two-edged sword is accurate enough. Love gives, and then love takes away.

[ This is why you get together with other immortals, why he's stayed clear of humans for so long — well, one of the reasons. Either way you never know how long you end up having, so might as well make the most of it while you can. That's just what life is. Here one day, gone tomorrow.

Right. He was about to make a shot. Getting back into the game, Spike aims for the harder sink of the two and, as you've probably guessed by now, misses. ]

What do you wanna ask?

[Jack would say Spike's been lucky in having other immortals around. The only one he knew before ending up here abandoned him on a space station thousands of years out of his own time and then wanted nothing to do with him for over a century.

...Which may have something to do with how long it's taken him to get used to the idea of Spike and Drusilla being together so long!

He watches Spike take the shot, and wonders briefly if he chose the more difficult shot deliberately for the sake of making another confession. Not that it makes much difference anyway. He grins, and goes for the obvious.]
Ianto. Seems only fair!

[ It probably helps that vampires are more common than you'd think. He's not exactly lacking choices, if he wanted to hook up with someone else. As for the shot, he might've done it to miss deliberately or he just wanted a challenge or maybe two things can be true. ]

Don't know what I want, but I know how to get it. [ He shrugs. Ianto is a weird thing to talk about, because Spike feels more than he thinks and that makes it difficult to explain when all you have is lyrics. ] I just wanna be a good boy, I don't wanna be bad.

[Yeah, he thought that one might be a little more difficult for Spike to express, even without the restrictions of speech today. Still, he thinks he gets Spike's meaning on this one.]

Don't want to muck it up, eh? [With a wry grin as he lines up his shot.] I can certainly empathise with that one!

[ He shrugs, which is quickly turning into his version of a nod, a more nonchalant way to say yes, exactly that, you're so right. He doesn't want to muck it up. He wouldn't have agreed to any of this if he didn't take it seriously, if he didn't see it as some way to redeem himself or at least ease this searing burn in his chest. He's trying to be more man than monster, something the Sex Pistols and the Ramones never really covered in so many words.

Leaning against the cue, he watches Jack prepare for the shot, paying more attention to the man than the act. There's that, still. It's not quite complete, the deal they made. ]

[Well, if its standing by appreciating the perfection of the physical male form he wants, pool is definitely a good game for it. All that bending over and stretching out (and yes, Jack did take his coat off when they got there even if his mun forgot to mention it), not to mention the sheer focus he's putting into it now because he feels it's only right that he should actually pot a few balls.

Which he manages, before ending up in a position where there's really nothing potable and so he plays safe instead, actually managing to put the white ball somewhere it'll be pretty hard for Spike to do anything much with his next shot too. He straightens with a smirk.]

All right, go for it!

[ He's starting to see the draw of the physical male form. In some ways he did that even before all these shenanigans, as appreciation for a well-toned, well-built musculature or that sort of platonic acknowledgement of physical attractiveness. It's different now, though. Now he thinks more about what that body can do and not in the ways of snapping and breaking.

It's distracting to say the least and it's probably obvious he wasn't paying attention to the game with the way he startles. It doesn't take him long to come up with a topic though — another scribble, another napkin, two letters.

Me. ]

[Well, it probably is easier to appreciate when it's a form that's as pleasing to look at as Jack's is!

He chuckles a bit when Spike startles, but there's no malice in it. He likes being admired, after all - and he's certainly not above doing a bit of oggling himself!

The word written on the napkin is no more a surprise than the last one, but it does give him a moment's pause.]
Oh, my - where to start!

[He swigs at the whisky while he thinks, enjoying the faint buzz it's starting to bring with it, and considers Spike thoughtfully.]

I always feel like you're expecting something to go wrong with us. Like you don't trust me not to put my great big foot in it. Which I'll admit is probably fair enough, but I feel like you don't believe there's enough of a lure about you to draw me in, beyond the obvious. [The obvious being the physical, but he's not leering this time. He's serious. And well aware he could get this kicked right back at him, but he's going to say it anyway.] It's almost like you think you're not good enough for me or something? Or perhaps that I'm not good enough, I don't know!

[Perhaps not the best thing to try and talk about on this day of all days, especially when he can't even really work out what he's trying to say, but it's what's at the front of his mind right now.]

[ Right on the money there, Jack. It's not something he owns up to very often but Spike - William - always feel like he's the one who has to earn someone else. Harmony might've been an exception but she was an exception in every single way, he didn't love her, didn't feel like he should make it right by her. Other than her, he's been reaching. He's a good for nothing and he knows it.

The stretch of silence might be enough to tell Jack that he's right, and if it isn't then the way Spike clutches at the whiskey bottle, taking a deep, long swig, surely will. He sets the bottle down with a heavy clunk, readying the next shot and deliberately missing in such a blatant fashion that it'd be easy to assume this part of the game is losing interest to him. ]

[He's not quite sure what he expected - another shrug, perhaps, or a vehement denial - but what he gets is a long lack of response followed by whiskey followed by being ignored as Spike gets down to his next shot, which is rather unnerving in as much as it means he's got it dead right.

He watches Spike miss the shot, frowning, and then props his own cue against the table so as to have both hands free as he steps in front of Spike and closes his hands around leather-clad biceps, peering into Spike's face.]

Spike. You're good enough, all right? Sure, you've done some questionable things but so have we all and that's never stopped me wanting someone. There's a lot about you that's attractive, and it's not just that you're drop dead gorgeous and hotter than hell. You're straight talking, and perceptive in a way I'll never be, you're fiercely loyal and you're good for Ianto, which means more than perhaps anything else, to me.

[ Not too long ago that would've been exactly what Spike would've done — shrug, deflect, squirm out of those too-warm hands grabbing him by the arms. He does none of those things, tho Jack can probably feel him tense, see the way he's avoiding eye contact. He's not good at vulnerability. It gets you killed and then you have moments like these where vulnerability is exactly what you need. He swallows, steels himself to look back at Jack. ]

Don't be fooled by the signs, don't read in between the lines.

[ He knows what he is. People've been telling him that his entire life. ]

[They've been deflecting long enough, the two of them, forever avoiding talking about the things they need to talk about. It's improved in recent weeks - they've managed to get down to some of the serious nitty gritty in their last couple of conversations - but there's still a lot more to be said, and this in particular, Jack feels, is something that needs to be addressed before they can go much further.]

Spike. For god's sake, Ianto's fallen in love with you, and he's one of the best men I've ever known! I don't think he would have done that if you hadn't been worth it.

[ He can't help but flinch out of reflex — don't bring up God in this. Not that he's so sensitive but yeah, vulnerability and lowering his guard and some things are so ingrained in his very spine that he can't help himself.

He squirms himself out of Jack's grip to reach for the pen and napkin again, turning it over and jotting down a sentence. He doesn't trust his voice to properly convey what he wants to say.

Good people always do what's worst for them. Trust me on that. ]

[He feels the flinch - was expecting it - and lets go easily enough when Spike starts to squirm, even before he realises he's doing it so he can get to the pen and paper again. He waits rather tensely as Spike writes, watching over his shoulder and grunting impatiently once he's got the gist of it, before Spike's even reached the end.]

Not always. And anyway, in what way exactly are you bad for him? Or for me?

For people like me, there is no order.

[ The best he can say on the subject. He's chaos, he's destruction and if anyone is going to fuck this up, his bet is on himself. ]

Love giving you the run around, it really makes you crazy. This business is killing me.

[ Love's bitch, or something to that effect. He reaches for the whiskey again, needing something to wash all this down with. ]

For someone who comes across as such a cocky git, you're really not very confident in yourself, are you? [It's something he can empathise with to a certain extent - because however confident he is in bed, he's never thought of himself as particularly loveable, or worth someone hanging on to - but it's not something he expected to find, at least not to this level, in Spike.

He frowns, leaning back against the table, studying him.]

I'm not going to give up on you, you know. I'm going to do whatever it takes until you trust me to know what I'm doing.

[ Spike pauses at that, giving Jack a look as if to say yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. He comes from a place of such deep self-loathing that the only thing that could come even close to curing it was dying and turning all that outward into aggression. He doesn't so much hate himself as revels in the fact that he's worth hating — if you can't be loved, and all that. That's also why Dru had such an easy time turning him. It was infinitely better than the alternative. ]

Oh you silly thing, you've really gone and done it now. What's the use of wasting time?

[ Don't fix him. Fuck him if you have to but don't fucking fix him. ]

[He gazes at Spike a moment long, and then drops it, shaking his head with a smile.]

All right then, I'll let it go. [For now, at least. He turns to pick up his whiskey and takes a long drink.]

You want to continue the game, or just the pool?

No fun, my babe no fun.

[ Spike shrugs in response, taking another long swig of whiskey – he's pretty much done with both of these activities. Not saying he wants to end the night, though. ]

I don't mind the things that you say.

[ Oh Jack, do you really want to do that? Spike's so bad at backing down from a challenge, especially if it's one that allows him to change the topic to something less emotional. He scoffs, half-turning away as if he's about to give up on the whole situation, only to turn back with speed and force, grabbing Jack by the shirt in an effort to knock him off balance and press him back over the pool table.

He slips into gameface while he's at it, as added flavour. Don't think he's forgotten the effect that has. ]

How many ways to get what you want?
