Day 389 : Video/Action : Anniversary
[Kitty appears on the video with bruises from a failed strangling fading on her neck. Things got rough a couple of days ago.]

So, it's Day 389 which also means it's been a year since I got here. And since the only other one who made that length of time is gone now, I guess I'm the reigning champ of sticking around. Celebrate or mourn it with me at Lyrical I guess. Funny hats are a plus. [She doesn't really know how to feel about it, but she figures it will be better to be not alone.]

Everyone's invited. [That was for Reid. Just in case he forgot, but if newbies want to party too then she doesn't really mind. She'll be set up on a small, comfy couch nursing a drink and listening to the music she requested from the music station. She isn't actually wearing a funny hat...yet?]

[Private to Chekov]

Hey.

He lets out a long breath, and ducks his head for a moment. "...Yeah. I have to say, that night was not the most fun I've ever had."

"I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you and that she wasn't ready to be there in the same way. You did right by both of us." She reaches over to give his shoulder a squeeze.

He manages a little smile, and leans into her touch enough to make it clear just how all right he's not.

"It's all right. You - she did fine. I'm sorry I didn't suss something was up with Ianto sooner so that didn't have to happen at all!"

"It's okay." She wishes he had but only to spare both of them. Sure, she could have done without it too, but from all appearances she's pretty sure she came out on top even if her other self hadn't. She remembers the fear and vulnerability, but she doesn't feel it the same way. She knows she's not immortal or invulnerable but she also knows she can take care of herself in a way the other girl had never learned.

"Hopefully next time they skip us or just change us all so no one has to be the odd man out."

He quirks an eyebrow at her, clutching at a slight distraction from the main topic. "I was changed too, remember? Or have you forgotten me singing to you in the coffee shop that morning?"

"What? Does this mean you're not going to sing to me every time I get coffee?" Yeah, yeah, she knows he was changed, but he was still him. At least he seemed like just a singing version of him. "I'm addicted now."

He laughs. "I can sing to you every time you get coffee if you want! It was just that your other self didn't seem to know what to do with it!"

He laughs again, more genuine this time. "Exactly the way I like it!" He lifts his bottle in a toast to that and drinks.

"Want me to sing you a song now?" he asks, glancing over towards the stage area.

She lifts an eyebrow. "You wouldn't really?" What is she thinking? Of course he would.

"Wanna bet?" Oh, if she's daring him then she is so going to regret that!

He grins, and heads across to the stage and the song selections. He's been here before and he knows what's in their repertoire and there's one song that's just crying out to be sung to Kitty.

He starts the music, grins at her as the introduction plays, and then starts to sing, light and playful, definitely playing rather than making a big thing of it as he could, considering the lyrics.

"You'd be so easy to love
So easy to idolize all others above
So worth the yearning for
So swell to keep every home fire burning for

We'd be so grand at the game
Carefree together that it does seem a shame
That you can't see your future with me
Cause you'd be, oh, so easy to love"

At first she's just smiling away, waiting to see if he actually does it. He does. Of course he does.

Is this a great choice or a terrible choice? Considering she has been thinking of herself more and more as "hard to love" there is something very reassuring about it. On the other hand, her relationship with Jack is complicated because even when you have a chosen, agreed upon trajectory, you still have to get your heart, mind, and body to follow suit and this song sounds perfect for unrequited love. Luckily, his tone helps a lot. Now if she could just pretend she didn't know the words.

She listens on, not wanting to interrupt mid-performance. Okay, part of her wants to interrupt, but she holds back.

It's possible that this is actually a terrible choice, and by the time he's halfway through the song he's starting to suspect that it's swinging that way because, however hard he tries to emphasise the playfulness, there's a whole load of longing seeping through.

In an attempt to hold onto the lightheartedness (true to Cole Porter, who was always lighthearted), when the musical interlude comes he holds out his hand to her, his whole poise making it clear he's asking her to dance.

Oh, longing, what is she supposed to do with you?

Luckily, he changes it to a question about will she or won't she dance and of course she will. She puts her hand in his and moves along easily with him as he continues to sing. She doesn't actually know the song but that's not the only thing that stops her from joining in. Just not a big singer.

Tamp it down rather than let it out to play. As in, the complete opposite of what he's doing.

At least they can dance. It might not really help with that tamping down the longing thing, but it does take the edge off by changing the emphasis. Because, after all, Kitty can dance. Well enough to follow his lead as he guides her through the sways and twirls of a fairly comprehensive musical theatre dance, just because he can.

It's not exactly the kind of dance she trained for, but neither is much of the partner dancing she does here at parties and get togethers with Jack apparently. But she still picks things up quickly and executes them gracefully. Just a little learning curve around the edges.

She smiles softly at all this. She's fond of Jack and this is nice. It doesn't exactly make her want to push him up against a wall and kiss him so that's good. (Not that she'd be opposed either.) But it doesn't exactly make her want to pull away. Is that bad though? She doesn't have that many people she's truly close to and it feels more and more like she's lost that in Reid. He was her lover, but he was her best friend too. She misses all of that. The familiarity. The "home" feeling she had in him that told her she was with family. Just not in a weird incestuous way. She still feels a lot of attachment to Reid, but she's not so sure the feeling is mutual and that just makes it lonelier. But Reid aside, she just needs her connections and Jack has been a strong one for a long time.

"Did you sing back home?"

He's smiling too. This is nice. It's like a controlled way to indulge that deep affection they share for each other, and he enjoys it greatly.

"Sometimes," he nods, leading her politely back to her seat as the music ends. "Not so much recently, but once upon a time I was in musicals. Cole Porter even wrote a song for me!"

"A very long and thrilling one!" he responds immediately, flashing her a smile that wouldn't have looked out of place on the actor Cole Porter wrote the song for.

Then it turns wry. "Of course, that was a lifetime ago, by most people's standards. More than. Just a fun little interlude between catching aliens and saving the Earth."

"Well, that I guessed." Or maybe she hadn't, but she should have because of course. It'd be faster to ask who you turned you down.

Of course she should have!

He grins again, and generously decides to elaborate. "To be honest, I was really there on business. There'd been rumours of something that sounded suspiciously like Daleks in a theatre in Manhatten a couple of years previously, and so Torchwood sent me in under cover to do a scout out. Never saw any, though - which was a relief!" A tiny shudder, because he's never not going to be scared of Daleks, after they killed him that first time. "So I just got to spend a very pleasant few months instead just singing and dancing, and banging Cole Porter!"

She almost asks, but then remembers the Daleks from the video she saw of Jack's death. His first death.

"Sounds like a pretty good mission. I can't say I ever had any turn out like that. If I was sent to scout out bad things I always found bad things or worse things."
