Day 376 - Open Action
Upon waking up from the dreams, Martha's first thought was she clearly needed therapy. She elected to stay in her flat that day.

The next day she discovered she was out of tea. Perhaps it was time to get back out into the world dome. They were only dreams after all. It's not like anyone else experienced the same things, right?

Her day was much like any other. She started at the Coffee Bean for a quick pick-me-up, then spent some time in Trois park meditating. She did need to get some shopping done as well, both for food and clothes, so she could be found in the various sectors getting things.

Late in the evening, when she was sure Ianto would be gone, she even ventured over to the library to grab a novel or two.

Trois Park is a beautiful place to walk, enjoy this environment's best simulation of nature, and not think abut dreams. It's also, it turns out, a good place to run into strangers who wandered into those dreams. As much as Gaeta doesn't want to talk to anyone, he feels he owes it to her to apologize. After all, she did die.

"Martha Jones, right?" He's not interrupting, is he? He's probably interrupting. Maybe he should be somewhere that's not here.

The voice is faintly familiar. Martha opens one eye to see who's talking to her and her jaw drops.

"You! A dream. Am I still dreaming?"

Forgive the choppiness. She hadn't expected to run into said stranger. And he knows her name. It has to be a dream.

"This is probably a bad time to say that we're apparently all dreaming, isn't it?" Yes, it is. "You're awake enough. I'm sorry you got caught up in... that."

Martha cocked her head. "How do you know what I was dreaming?" She hadn't participated the last time around. She was too busy healing from a vampire bite. Thus she wasn't aware of the nature of the dreams.

He hasn't participated before, either, but of course he had to look into it after the strange dreams ended. "You were there, I was there. It felt like a safe guess. Am I wrong?"

She shakes her head. "No. Explains why I had no idea where I was or who anyone was?..." Her voice suddenly turns more... frustrated. "I was trying to save you! What the hell?"

"I was trying to save you, too." He holds his hands up in a gesture of pacification. Maybe surrender. "Sorry that didn't work out. Thank you, though."

He has a point. Martha takes a deep breath. "Where were we anyway?" Maybe if she asks questions, he'll sit and she won't have to crane her neck to look at him.

Sitting demands an ease that Gaeta isn't feeling. It's a lot easier to run away from a situation when you're already on your feet.

"On the Galactica. It's a battlestar—a space ship. Not the friendliest place to be if you get on the wrong sides of the wrong people."

"Clearly," she replied dryly. "What did you do to warrant a kangaroo court?"

"You ask that after throwing yourself in the line of fire for me?" He smiles humorlessly and finally sits. "Not that I don't appreciate the thought."

"Seemed like a good idea at the time. It was a dream. People do crazy things in dreams." He finally sits, for which Martha is grateful. Her neck was starting to ache from craning up at him.

"The plan was that the barrels would confuse them enough that I'd be able to grab you and run. Figured you'd explain it to me as we ran. But things didn't work out that way."

"Still..." As much as he doesn't want her to dismiss the importance of her actions—that she took a risk for him means something to him—it's true. The actions people take in dreams aren't necessarily the same as those they would take while awake and in full control of themselves.

"Not a bad plan. It might've worked in reality, but that dream only ever ends one way."

She would have done it in real life too though. That was the crazy thing. But it was easier not to talk about that.

"I'm sorry. It sounds awful. I have one of those too. The ending is different, but it amounts to the same regardless."

With any luck, Martha won't have to do anything like that in real life.

"It is what it is." He frowns at her. "You dream about dying?"

Martha looks ahead of her unseeing. "I dream of a mistake. I dream of billions of people dying. I dream of never getting the chance to rectify what I did. Some nights I die. Other nights I survive. They're all still dead in the end."

"I'm sorry." He means that. Although he was in no way responsible for the fifty billion humans who died when the cylons attempted to exterminate humanity, just making it through something like that—wondering what you did to deserve to live when so few people did—is a horror that never goes away. To feel that you had a hand in causing those deaths...

That's unimaginable. He doesn't know what else to say.

Martha nods at his sorry.

"I know what it's like to be a public enemy. I've bent my knee and bowed my head to the man who wanted me dead. It's why I stepped in to save you. But I managed to bungle that up as well. Stupid blonde bitch."

"You're not the first person to call Thrace that," he says with smirk that doesn't linger long. The near-execution happened too recently to be at all amusing. "I hope your actual experience ended better than the dream did."

Martha shrugs. "It did. Time reset itself. Most people don't even know what happened."

She looks over to him. "It was long enough ago that usually it's not a problem. Not unless they throw vivid nightmares at us."

"How long ago was it?" You know, for reference. He wants to know when to expect the dreams to stop. "And time reset itself? I'm no expert on temporal physics, but that doesn't sound like something that should happen."

"It's been," Martha pauses, then. Her sense of time is a bit off considering her time spent here, her time at home, and the odd bits of time travel thrown in.

"Three years, I think. Three years give or take a few months. Things go a bit wibbly wobbly when time travel's involved."

She shrugged then. "I suppose it's not really supposed to happen. But then there was a paradox machine. And when we destroyed that, the paradox had to fix itself. It was like it never happened. Only those close enough to the paradox machine remembered."

"You must come from quite a world if time travel is commonplace. I'm from a spacefaring society, but we don't have anything that sophisticated." And it's possible that they never will now that humanity is barely surviving. Looking into something that not everyone can agree is feasible is low on the list of priorities.

She loses him at paradox machine, however. "I can't even imagine what a paradox machine would do. Resolve paradoxes? Generate them?"

"We don't either. The best humans have managed is going to the moon and back... and that was over 40 years ago. I just happened to impress an alien who does have a time machine.

"The second one. Kind of. More that a paradox machine maintains a paradox. Otherwise the world would do everything it could to fix itself."

"An alien. With a time machine." It's not that he doesn't believe her. He's just from a very different science fiction franchise where everything is bleak and gritty and made of suffering. There's no room for whimsical things like time travel and aliens and paradoxes.

"I understand what you're saying on a strictly philosophical level, but that still sounds completely crazy."
