Day 376 - Open Action
Upon waking up from the dreams, Martha's first thought was she clearly needed therapy. She elected to stay in her flat that day.

The next day she discovered she was out of tea. Perhaps it was time to get back out into the world dome. They were only dreams after all. It's not like anyone else experienced the same things, right?

Her day was much like any other. She started at the Coffee Bean for a quick pick-me-up, then spent some time in Trois park meditating. She did need to get some shopping done as well, both for food and clothes, so she could be found in the various sectors getting things.

Late in the evening, when she was sure Ianto would be gone, she even ventured over to the library to grab a novel or two.

"You must come from quite a world if time travel is commonplace. I'm from a spacefaring society, but we don't have anything that sophisticated." And it's possible that they never will now that humanity is barely surviving. Looking into something that not everyone can agree is feasible is low on the list of priorities.

She loses him at paradox machine, however. "I can't even imagine what a paradox machine would do. Resolve paradoxes? Generate them?"

"We don't either. The best humans have managed is going to the moon and back... and that was over 40 years ago. I just happened to impress an alien who does have a time machine.

"The second one. Kind of. More that a paradox machine maintains a paradox. Otherwise the world would do everything it could to fix itself."

"An alien. With a time machine." It's not that he doesn't believe her. He's just from a very different science fiction franchise where everything is bleak and gritty and made of suffering. There's no room for whimsical things like time travel and aliens and paradoxes.

"I understand what you're saying on a strictly philosophical level, but that still sounds completely crazy."

"It does rather," she agrees with a grim smile. "I wouldn't have believed it myself if it weren't for the fact that we seem to be getting regular alien visits, and then my hospital ended up on the moon."

Which really does sound crazy. Her whole life is crazy. Martha laughs.

"And now you can declare me insane and cart me off to the mental hospital. I've lived an odd couple years."

"Calling you insane would make me a hypocrite. Your possible mental instability is safe with me." He doesn't think she's insane, it's fine. "I do have to ask how your entire hospital managed to get to a moon."

"Well, that's actually a really good story." Her voice drops a tone or two as she moves into her storytelling mode. Because if there's one thing Martha can do well, it's tell stories. And she's a fairly good doctor too!

And so she tells him the story of the Judoon on the Moon. Meeting the Doctor. The Plasmavore. Everything about that first adventure with the Doctor. Martha may be a great storyteller, but her mun is not.

He listens intently because she is an engaging storyteller, the story is good, and it doesn't end with everyone dying.

"You've lived an interesting life, Jones."

"Martha," she corrects. "Last person to call me Jones was the chief of UNIT. We argued a lot. And everyone else attaches a Dr. to my surname."

She laughs though. "Yes. It has been quite interesting."

"Martha, then. Call me Felix." As bizarre as that is. This is what being friendly is like, right? "Something tells me I'd lose any argument with you, so I want to stay on your good side."

"Felix," she replies looking just the tiniest bit surprised. Not exactly the first name that would have popped into her head. "I'm not that pugnacious!" she exclaims, reaching a foot out to nudge him, but then she has to concede. "I am stubborn though. So you may be right."

It's a terrible name that implies that its bearer is a lucky individual. His parents were clearly going for irony above all else.

He smiles and nudges her right back. "It was a compliment," he protests lightly. "You need some pugnacity to get you through an interesting life intact."

Martha grins back. "Then I thank you for the compliment Felix. And honestly, your life seems rather interesting too." Maybe not interesting in the way Martha's is. "Space travel. Is Earth still around for you guys? Or did it ever exist even?" She'll skip the trial. That was just asking for bad feelings all around.

"'Interesting' is a word you could use." The smile's gone. "We're looking for Earth. I thought that it was just a scriptural myth until we started turning up artifacts that back up the old stories. Earth might not exist anymore, but hope that it's out there is about the only thing keeping humanity going."

"A scriptural myth? He should talk to Mal... You're from the future!"

And then her excitement fades. "A very sad future it sounds like."

"That's what I hear." It seems like a reasonable guess, but the scriptures also emphasize the fact that history repeats itself eternally. For all he knows, he could be from the distant past compared to some of the people here. It's too much to consider.

"It's bleak," he admits. "Fifty billion people were killed in the Cylon Holocaust, and we've lost another nine thousand since."

Fifty billion is a large number. Much larger than anything she's ever known on her world. Far, far larger than the number she feels guilt for every day. All traces of a smile are gone as he talks.

"I'm sorry Felix. That's... I can't imagine it."

He shrugs and crosses his arms. "Fifty billion is just a number. The deaths since then have been worse, in a way... hundreds of lives, or even thousands? That's imaginable. It feels real in a way that fifty billion doesn't."

But this is grim and Martha hasn't done anything to deserve being burdened by stories about the Twelve Colonies and humanity's slow trek towards extinction. "That's a different universe, though. It doesn't matter here."

Martha can't help it. She's a physical person. Perhaps not quite as much as Jack is, but enough that she does move so she's actually sitting next to Gaeta, her shoulder touching his. It has the advantage of not actually looking him in the face either, which she imagines makes talking about it more difficult. Knowing someone's scrutinizing you.

"It does though. It's a thing you still remember. A thing that helps define who you are whether you like it or not. Sometimes being away from it all makes it hurt all the more."

Martha's doing everything—she tried to save him in the dream even though she had no idea what was going on, and now she's offering sympathy without any reason to do so. She's providing contact without making any movements that could be interpreted as threatening, caring without being patronizing. Granting permission to grieve. It's kindness that no one at home has been willing to show him. That, more than anything, breaks the facade of wry composure that Gaeta has been shoring up since the cylons attacked.

He bows his head and cries soundlessly.

Martha hadn't expected him to start crying. She placed a hand on his back, rubbing lightly, but otherwise keeping silent. Nothing she could say would help in this situation. Her presence was all that was required.

Crying is embarrassing. Crying in front of a relative stranger just because they were nice is absolutely mortifying and Gaeta is quick to pull himself back together.

"Sorry," he mumbles, keeping his head down.

"Maybe that's true here." He swipes a hand across his eyes, straightens, and bumps her shoulder with his. "But thank you, Martha. I'd offer to buy you a drink if that wasn't such an empty gesture."

"Then pencil me in for some evening when you're free," he says, and it sounds like a question rather than a suggestion. "My schedule's wide open."
