344 - Animal Parts Mingle!
[ Something is weird. Perhaps you've had a snack that had some unfortunate side effects, maybe it's something in the water or you just got out of bed wrong this morning. It takes so incredibly little to end up with a strange day on your hands, although this is perhaps a little stranger of a day than usual.

Duck your heads, watch where you put your paws and be careful about yiffing the poodle next door. ]

(( ooc: EVENT INFO! All animal side effects will be reversed by daypost tomorrow! ))

Just co-workers? [ pot, meet kettle. she would likely label her colleagues in much the same manner. to do otherwise was to admit weakness, and leia had a thick outer layer that was difficult to penetrate. (luke, forever and always, was the exception to all her rules.)

reid, miraculously, had somehow managed to slip past the outermost layers of her walls with an ease most didn't. especially not in recent years. she wasn't always this tightly wound, this guarded. but time, and the loss of alderaan, had taken its toll. ]

I don't want him here. Having him here makes me feel whole again [ quite literally ], but filling that void isn't a good enough reason for him to remain.

Just co-workers. [ Friends, family, the closest and dearest people he's ever had or ever will come to know in his life. But just co-workers, here. It's easier that way. ]

It's hard, isn't it? Ignoring what you really want for what's best. Maybe even harder the other way around.

[ hard. it's been a long time since anyone thought the choices she made were hard. it has her smiling at him again, for she has a reputation within the alliance for being cold and made of impenetrable alusteel when it comes to making tough decisions with an ease that doesn't convey her inner turmoil. ]

I like to think it's an art I've perfected over the years. It never gets any easier, but you get better at knowing what to do. What's the best for others, for everyone else, is rarely what's in your own best interest. You learn to live with it.

[ He's spent almost a decade around Hotch. Compared to that, Leia is practically wearing her emotions on her sleeve, lit up with flashing neon. Perhaps he understands it because he lives it, has lived it for most of his adult life. Some people won't get it. ]

Exactly. And when you do do something in your own interest... [ He trails off. Let's not. ] At least it's for the greater good, hopefully.

[ han had no trouble reading her either, and it used to infuriate her to no end that he could, but she tries very hard not to think about him. she misses him, but she doesn't want him here, and takes comfort in the fact that he hasn't been tossed unfairly into this prison. especially after jabba. it's easier to work herself towards a place where she can live without him knowing that he's not encased in carbonite. ]

You wind up getting mixed up with pirates, a situation that hardly ever works out in anyone's favor. We were lucky, and I was stupid.

[ not her finest hour, and one of the few times she actually acted on her grief instead of turning her back to it. ]

Honestly, I don't believe in luck. Coincidence, maybe... still, sometimes I wonder. [ People getting away with ridiculous stunts. Bad things continuously happening to good people. The amount of coworkers he has that did or almost lost a loved one to the dangers of their profession. ]

It doesn't matter, in the end. What happens, happens. We just have to move on from it... this included.

I'd rather it be luck than some will of the Force.

[ she' still pretty upset with the notion that everything happens for a reason; will of the force and all. the force was enough of an influence over her life without it interfering in everything else. ]

I'll get over it. [ this. what the prison is currently doing to everyone and the prison itself. ] But I won't forget it.

[ It's always a struggle between rational and superstitious when it comes to Reid. Most of the time the rational side wins out and then things happen, like Julio in Miami, that shakes his beliefs in their very foundation. Being here isn't helping any of that. It's a miracle he hasn't gone crazy by now. ]

That's the best we can do. Move on, remember, learn from the experience. It won't be long before the mistletoe bots come back, if my calculations are correct.

Mistletoe. It's a parasitic plant from Earth commonly associated with... well, I guess you could call it a courtship ritual.

What sort of courtship ritual involves a parasitic plant?

[ earth keeps getting weirder and weirder sounding... ]

Well, ah... in Europe, mistletoe was associated with fertility and vitality through the Middle Ages, and by the 18th century it had also become incorporated into Christmas celebrations around the world. The serving class of Victorian England is credited with first recording the tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe. The tradition dictated that a man was allowed to kiss any woman standing underneath mistletoe, and that bad luck would befall any woman who refused the kiss. One variation on the tradition stated that with each kiss a berry was to be plucked from the mistletoe, and the kissing must stop after all the berries had been removed.

I have no idea why the Wardens decided to adopt that tradition, especially since it has nothing to do with Christmas here.

That's quite the tradition. [ she's shaking her head, trying to picture sprigs of parasitic plants hanging from aldera palace's archways. (she can't.)

though, now she has another question: ]
I probably sound like a distorted datastream with all my Earth questions, but what's Christmas?

That's, ah... that's a really long and complicated answer. I mean, I can absolutely tell you everything you'd ever want to know about Christmas, if you want?

Long or short version?

Whichever you want to give me. It's not like I have any pressing matters to attend to.

Alright. [ Buckle up. This is going to be a long one.

Actually, in the spirit of laziness, I'm not going to type out the massive info dump she's in for. Safe to say it'll be something like this, possibly the whole damn thing if she doesn't stop him at some point. The perils of talking to a walking encyclopedia. ]
