[Morning. She's not quite awake yet, but she feels warm and safe and pressed close to someone and it hasn't quite had time to feel wrong yet.]

[Single again. It's getting to be shorter each time. One day is definitely a record. She keeps reaching for her communicator to call Ianto or even Reid, but she keeps putting her hand down again. It's probably starting to look like some kind of bizarre exercise routine to the casual observer. Instead, she settles down in her office at the Defense Force headquarters to look through some of their research even if her mind isn't really on it. Apparently there was also a murder yesterday. She needs to check that out. Part of what everyone went through or standard murderous tendencies?

The door is open in case anyone wants to come in. And if you do, you might notice the band on her wrist which has been blue for quite awhile is now a bright red.]

Hey... Um, are you busy? You want to do something? We could talk about quantum mechanics or eat ice cream. Or do both I guess. They aren't really mutually exclusive kinds of activities.

Not the point. [He can see it happening as she withdraws from him, not just physically (which he was, after all, encouraging) but emotionally as well.

He glances down at her wrist, and then at his own, at least as relieved as she is not to find black around his wrist once more. He's had enough of that for one lifetime.]

Well, at least there's that. Apparently they're still happy to punish us for dying, but sleeping with other people because they've flung us together is okay.

Yeah, of course I'll tell him. [He's never really kept his liaisons a secret anyway, except when Ianto asked him to because he didn't want to know. And now? It's not like it's something he could really keep secret anyway. He must have told at least half the dome yesterday.]

But you don't have anything to apologise for. It wasn't your fault. It was those damn AIs.

[He watches her for a moment, still half-caught in the memory of her being his wife, his one and only. Then he catches himself and turns away to find his own clothes. He's sure him being naked isn't making this any easier for her.

He wonders if the closets here are still full of his own outfits as they were yesterday, or if they're back at his and Ianto's apartment. He can't quite bear to look, but instead starts to pull on yesterday's clothes, looking round at Kitty, unusually hesitant.]

When I said I was sorry, it wasn't that I was sorry for yesterday. Yesterday was amazing. I always thought we'd be great together, and yesterday proved it. It wasn't just warden magic, was it? It was us. We worked. We would work.

[If he hadn't already given himself to Ianto.]

[She is turned away when he says that and thankful for it as she closes her eyes and bites her bottom lip, trying to hold the emotion back. Come on, she was doing so well trying not to feel it.]

Jack... [Her voice is soft, it warbles a little. She draws a breath and turns to look at him, trying to harden herself—her expression, her voice.]

Do you think that makes it better? We could work? Me and Reid could work too. But I'm still going home alone again.

No. No, it doesn't make it better at all. It makes it much, much harder. And it's not fair. They experiment with us - play with us - and like you said, it's us who have to deal with the fall-out.

[He wants to hold her, comfort her, but he knows that'll just make it harder for her. Even so, he'll do it in a flash if she wants.]

[She wants it. Of course she wants it. She wants to feel all the security and love and warmth of yesterday again. But that isn't waiting for her. She's already been spending her days missing it from someone else. And much like today that's not Jack's fault.

Kitty wraps her arms across her chest protectively, watching him for a moment. It's hard—impossible—not to feel more for him than she did before. Part of her wants to lash out again and phase herself out of this room. It's easy. It's a comfort zone and this zone she's in now? There's nothing comfortable about it, but it also makes it harder to take it out on yesterday's husband when she's worried about him too. He has feelings about this too and a relationship with Ianto to look out for.]

What were you apologizing for?

Yeah, well...it's not my first failed marriage.

[Not that it failed. Not on it's own. They were doing great and she's not sure where the line between fake and real is there. It's not like she didn't enjoy Jack before or have a certain amount of attraction, but she was in love with and faithful to Reid. Maybe that's exactly what they would have been to each other under different circumstances.]

[She meets his eyes and her voice softens a little.] No. It was... [wonderful. She'd been extremely happy.] You know how it was. [And, no, it's not that comforting because now he has his relationship with Ianto to work on and she has hers with Reid and now maybe with Jack to mourn. In some ways her world made things easier. There was death and loss and violence and inhumanity everywhere. She couldn't let it in. She stayed hard and moved from one tragedy to the next staying behind the walls she'd built up to protect herself from it all. It always crept in, but she didn't react. There wasn't time.

There's so much time here. Years of things she never dealt with coming back with their new friends every time she opens her heart and lets herself be vulnerable.]

[Softly] Yeah. [It was wonderful. Perfect possibly in the way that only a fictional marriage can be. His lips twitch wryly as he looks down to fasten his boots.]

Of course, it might not have lasted like that, in reality. You know how we clash sometimes, over leadership of the Defence Force. I expect some of that would have crept in eventually.

[Hoping that might be at least a little bit comforting.]

	Sure. And I'm not sure how well I'd handle you coaxing people into mistletoe bot barriers on purpose. [Just one example of course. She actually handled the open relationship with Tyki pretty well, but that was really only because she never wanted to admit it was a relationship and he never really exercised his freedom until they were over.] (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[Gotta be mourn something before you can move on? And part of her just didn't want him to think he's a terrible husband even if he was saying it just to cheer her up. She's been thinking about Reid and Ianto but not a lot about her and Jack and where this actually leaves them.

She looks at his outstretched arms for a moment before deciding to step forward. Once she does she curls into the hug pretty easily.]

Think it'll be weird now? Awkward Force meetings?

[She's not exactly always the emotionally available, physically demonstrative type, but she would have hugged Jack before. Maybe she never did, but it could have been on the table. And to that extent this feels pretty normal and right. The part that's harder is that degree over the line where she feels the rub of his cheek and and the mold of his body and there's a recognition of how good it would feel to bring her lips up to his. It's not a thought she would have allowed herself before, but now it's inescapable even if she's not acting on it. And it doesn't just stem from the pleasure of the kiss, but from the emotional connection that still feels so recent and vivid.] Guess we're doomed then.
