I don't know anymore. I didn't think you'd ever be with someone like him.

[And as much as he'd like it to just be about the vampire part or the Spike is a dick part, some of it is because Spike also has a dick. That's not who he thought his brother was, and if he doesn't know that then what else doesn't he know? It's scary in a way that fighting monsters isn't. You spend so much time looking outside that you lose sight of what's on the inside and right now he can hear that timber in his brother's voice and see that look and part of him wants to back down so this can just be okay, but he can't.]

I keep thinking you're going to snap out of it and now you're wearing his ring. Really? Who are you?

[He looks stunned, hurt beyond words because this is more painful even that Spike. Of course he desperately wants his brother to approve of or at least accept him but he can live with it if he doesn't - unhappily, of course. But this is different. That reaction is more than just a rejection of Spike, its a rejection of him, of this part of himself that he will never be truly, entirely comfortable with. He's always going to be self-conscious about his sexuality and he's always going to worry about the reactions strangers will have. He's far less concerned about what people will think of him being engaged to a vampire than they will to him being engaged to a man. He didn't think he would have to worry about it from Sam though.

He glances away, blinking rapidly, eye's stinging but stubbornly not shedding tears. He's quiet but serious when he replies, still not looking at him.] It's not something I'm going to snap out of. Believe me, I spent quiet enough time trying to manage that on my own.

I... I just meant this thing with Spike. [Because it doesn't feel like that's the part they're talking about anymore and he wants it to be because it's the only part he feels confident about. Vampire bad. The rest? The rest he... He needs more time.]

I don't want you to get hurt. [Say the man who just hurt him after Spike made him happier than Sam could remember ever seeing him.]

We've always watched each other's backs. [He doesn't think Ianto's weak. He knows he's not. He probably knows it better than his brother. But it doesn't mean he doesn't worry.

His voice softens some, and he doesn't try meeting his eyes.] I told you, it's not about that. [Not that he said it specifically. And he's not completely sure what he's saying is true, but he...wants it to be true and that counts for something, right?]

[He lifts his head back up and this time he does look straight at his brother.] Listen, it's not something I expected and it...surprised me. Maybe it shouldn't, but it did. And sometimes that makes me wonder how well I really do know you, and how much I just assumed.

But I love you, and I want you to be happy because we don't get enough of that in this life. It's hard and bloody and... [Sorry, he's busy making Sam faces over here as the feel wash over him.]

I trust you, but I don't trust Spike and if I can't tell you that when I think you need to hear it then what are we even doing?

You don't trust me so stop pretending you do. This is happening with or without your approval so you may as well get used to it. If you can support me it would mean everything to me. You're my brother and I just... I'm happy and I want you to be a part of this but if you can't then you're right. There is no point.
