[Anyone living next door to Carol, or on her floor, or maybe even in her building, might have heard the scream. She stared at her face in the bathroom mirror, and then collapsed. When had she died? How long…? Her skin was mottled and rotting. Her eyes were sunken in, and her lips pulled back. She hardly recognized her own face. She was a walker.

How she still had thoughts and could still fumble with her headset, she didn’t know. Maybe she wasn't all the way gone yet. She was too shaken to bother with privacy settings.]

Carl … can you get a gun? A knife. Anything. Get to my apartment as fast as you can.

O-okay.

[She was kind of scaring him a little bit.

But he runs all of the way over to her apartment and tries the door. It opens without an issue and he pulls out one of the knives, holding it behind his back as he looks around the apartment and moving quietly, having not forgotten how to clear a room.

When it looked like nothing or no one was in the room...]

Carol?

[She listens from the bathroom for the front door. Her apartment is small. When Carl enters, she hears it, but waits for confirmation.]

Bathroom, Carl!

Oh... okay.

[Carl made sure the front door was closed and headed in the direction of the bathroom, hand still behind his back. He hesitated a moment, worried what he'd find then opened the door slowly]

Carol?

[So far he doesn't see anything odd...]

[She's afraid she'll lunge at him when she's sees him, that some walker instinct will take over.

It doesn't happen. But she's stays where she is, huddled in the corner of the bathroom.]

What do you have?

[He stands in the doorway, hand still behind his back. He's pretty much gathered now that she's convinced she's passed and turned into a walker.

But he knows about the walkers as much as she does. They don't talk. They don't think rationally. Logically (if she had died) she wouldn't have asked; she'd just be in the apartment. Also what about that big fancy computerized warden? They should have known if she had died, right?]

A knife. Before anything... I want to see.

[He's heard about strange things happening here and he's not convinced. Also if she's still rational... maybe there is hope if he talks to the wardens]

[She's been talking to others in the meantime. They've been able to talk her down from her panic. She still hasn't braved looking at her own flesh to see if it's whole and healthy, though. She pushes her hands out in the space between them.

And they're fine.]

[Carl took a few careful steps closer to get a better look at her hands]

I don't see anything wrong.

[And he's not just saying that. If she had turned, it would be in his best interest to tell her the truth]

No. Me either.

[She's feeling more than a little foolish. Not entirely sorry for calling Carl down here - If what she saw had been real, then he would have been the best person to deal with it, she was certain.]

The mirror showed me as a walker, and I believed it. Even though there were clues saying I shouldn't have.

[She sighs and lifts herself up to the lip of the bathtub.] Did I scare you?

[Carl, now satisfied everything is okay, puts the knife away in his bag. If she had been a walker, he was glad she had called him. He knew what to expect where as others did]

A little, but I'm glad you're all right. That mirror there?

[He just gestures to the mirror. He hasn't looked in it yet]

Mmhmm. [She's not making any moves toward it just yet. She'll have to pass it to get out of the bathroom. Knowing what it is now, she can probably manage. Still...]

You haven't seen anything strange in your reflection today?

[info]anothermonster

No not really. [His apartment might be a little bit of a mess that he just never saw it this morning.

So he tests it now, holding out his hand so he can see it reflected in the mirror as he's far enough to the side that he's not straight on and had been too distracted previously

She'd probably see his eyes go wide as he saw much the same thing she did, as though his skin was rotting away, but then again he can actually see his own hand and see it's not]

That's so weird! Really creepy...

[She sits up, alert and curious about what he's seeing. Not everyone saw the same things, she had some confirmation on that.]

So you do see something different? [She moves a bit so she can see part of his reflection. Is it because they are from the same world that they got a similar experience, or was this just a coincidence?]

Yeah, I'm seeing something not normal. [He's moving his hand to see what the mirror does]

I think it is the same thing you saw.

[She stands up and joins him at the mirror. She has to steel herself before facing the reflection again, but she knows it's not real now. If she can look past the similar features, she can almost pretend it isn't her very dead face looking back.]

Well. That's cheery. [She stepped away from the mirror and out of the bathroom. How about no more mirrors today? No more reflective surfaces at all. She doesn't want to jump and go on high alert every time she glimpses a walker in a window.] What purpose does this serve?

[Carl glances over at Carol as she walks over and looks in the mirror]

Isn't it though? So cheery.

[He follows her out of the bathroom, trying not to glance the rest of the way in the mirror as he leaves]

Not a clue. Because they are crazy?

I don't know about crazy. Could be a test. Experiment?

Maybe. Who knows how they think? They are computers. Maybe they are broken.

Maybe... [She recalls her conversation with one of the engineers - How when asked about the octopus storm, it had called it an "oops".

She gives Carl a considering look before asking,]
How do you feel about aliens?

More like ... strange giant nightmare bug. I met one. It [She .... ?] said it was an engineer. They created this place.

What? A giant bug? How is a giant bug an engineer?

I don't know. They're not really bugs. That's the closest comparison I can make.

Huh... I guess it takes all kinds here. But still seems odd for a bug to be an engineer.

Yeah... probably. It's really strange. But then again this place never claimed to be normal.
