Day 275 / Video / Locked to Defence Force
[Jack appears on the screen, a glimpse of his living room behind him. He looks pretty calm, and a lot more centred than he has done recently. Finally getting the best of Spike (because even if he died, Spike still has to heal) has done wonders for his confidence regarding getting the situation settled once and for all.]

I figure it's about time for a general update on the Spike situation. I've spoken to quite a few of you about this over the last week or two, but a general pooling of information would seem sensible.

Everyone should by now be aware that five nights ago Spike went on a bit of a spree. I don't know exactly how many people he attacked, but we have reports or punishment notices for Ton Phanan, Piper Halliwell, Nico di Angelo, Martha Jones and Clay Kaczmarek. There may have been considerably more.

I haven't heard of any fatalities so I'm assuming there weren't any, since he's been pretty careful so far not to kill anyone who wouldn't come back. But if you know of anyone who got killed, or anyone else who got hurt, please let us know – and please encourage people to tell the Defence Force if something like this happens. We can't help if we don't know!

Anyway, I think I've managed to put Spike out of action for a while, so hopefully we have time to do what we need to do to make sure he's not a threat to people's safety any longer. Which means putting his soul back into his dead, demon-possessed body to give him back his moral compass.

Ladies with the magical abilities, how are we doing with the spells? Let us know if there's any ingredients or anything you need, and we'll see if we can get them for you. [One of the spells he found mentioned something called an Orb of Thesulah, and he's not at all sure that's something that can be found within the dome. But there were other spells, and he's had the magic users looking them over for him for feasibility.]

The rest of you? We need rehabilitation points to get Spike's soul back. I spoke to the wardens yesterday and they confirmed that we can pool points for it, but it's going to need a lot of them. So anyone who has any spare points, please can you let me know? Conscienti said you'd need to give consent in person, but we can deal with that nearer the time. For now, all I need is a list of people who are willing to donate points, and once I have that I can go back and ask if that's enough points for what we need. So, names, please!

Aside from that: patrol. Spike seems to have slunk off to lick his wounds for the moment, but I don't know where he's holed up and I don't know how long we have. So patrol. Look out for him or any kind of trouble that he might be behind – as well as the normal stuff, of course. Spike's not necessarily the only threat we have here.

[He takes a breath.]

Okay, I think that's all for now. Questions, comments, suggestions?

[Private video to Anya]

Hey, can I talk to you about Spike?

((OOC: Feel free to approach Jack in person rather than over the network if you prefer. He can be found pretty much anywhere in the dome: at HQ, patrolling (Sectors 0-2), in the library, getting coffee, near his apartment (Sector 4), or even going for his daily swim in the sea! :-)

Also, if you want your character to donate rehabilitation points but don't want the hassle of threading it out, feel free to leave an OOC response to that effect here too, to keep everything in one place!))

I didn't say no. I'm just not saying yes. This isn't just about Spike. This is about how the Defense Force functions. Trust me to take that seriously.

I don't have a problem with you taking it seriously. I do have a problem with you effectively tying my hands behind my back and telling me I can't make decisions on how to run my own operation.

[Still not raising his voice, but his growing frustration is clear nonetheless.]

What would make you think you're running it? Because Ianto got attacked? You don't get to use the force's resources for personal vendettas.

Because I am running it! [Honest surprise in his eyes there. He really thought he had her behind him in this.

Mostly because he's deliberately forgotten all the times she's expressed dissatisfaction with his plans already.]

Because I've taken the lead on everything so far! I came up with the idea of the soul, I spent weeks in the library learning out to make it work, I recruited people to work the spell for me, and I've been out there this morning organising the whole thing! I assumed I was doing all that with your support.

And okay, it might have started out personal, but it became a whole lot more than that the moment he said he'd killed someone else. I was worried for everyone.

[That's what he believes, anyway. He's really not used to being this scared for someone close to him.]

You know who else came up with the idea of a soul and got the the investigative team working on research and talked to witches about working on a spell? Me. Only to find out you already knew about the option and didn't share. That's not how teams work and it's not how leadership works, Jack.

These people named me leader when Suzaku left and the things we do have to go through me. What we do is on me. I need to make sure we're moving in the right direction and keeping everyone's needs and rights in mind. That's not something I can just delegate. [It's a lot and it's heavy, but it's her responsibility and she takes it very seriously.]

So I'm glad you're worried about everyone. I know you are. You're that kind of man. That's why I wanted you in the force where you are, but you're not a one man show anymore.

[He stares at her, a high colour rising to his cheeks as she continues on. Because she's right and, deep down, he knows it. Doesn't mean he likes it, but then perhaps in a way he's just been waiting for her to smack him down, as someone always does. It takes him a minute after she finishes, but in the end he lets out a long breath, a lot of the fight going out of him along with it.]

Okay.

How do you want me to play this, then? Get a team together and keep them on standby in case it all goes wrong? And organise people to watch Spike so that we can know if it all goes wrong?

[He is trying, but it still seems a much harder way of going about it to him.]

((OOC: Trying to keep this one going, even if I don't have time to tag anything else, so we can get this plot moving again!))

[There is a definite swell of relief when he doesn't keep pushing and doesn't pull away, but she fights any urge that relief might have to play on her features and mostly wins. This part is easier—talking strategy, making plans.]

I want to be ready with that. I'd like to see us keeping tabs on him now. [Note to self, find materials for building a tracer.]

I think M'gann will be an asset for keeping an eye on him. She's a telepath and [Kitty doesn't realize Spike's mind is blocked from reading.] she can cloak herself invisibly. I'm not sure how well that works against vampire senses, but it can't hurt. Flight and telekinesis too so she should be relatively safe even if he tries something.

There's Data too. He doesn't need sleep and he's fresh out of blood. Strong and smart are understatements.

I'd rather see Zatanna and Piper working on the soul spell than watching him, but they'd be good if they get to a point where there's nothing left to research or practice.

Wally is fast. He'd be good to have on hand in case we needed back up. [She thinks in terms of fire power first. Who has the abilities to match super speed and strength?]

Sam's an expert in this field, but Spike's not from his world and even with the training he has no powers. I'd rather see him advising than in the field.

Pull together anyone else you need too. My group, your group. It doesn't matter. We just need people who can go up against him if it comes to that or get clear of him. I'll be there too.

...And keep on with plans for building the cage in case we need it.

[Once again, he makes himself listen patiently, or as patiently as he can. It's already made a little easier by her actually taking charge. He might be used to working on his own, but he's pretty good at taking orders too. It's the give and take with someone his own 'rank' that he's not so good at.

He nods in response to her suggestions.]
Data already volunteered for the combat team and said he'd up his patrols, so I guess he's already on board with that anyway. And M'gann's a good idea, though her telepath thing might not work on Spike. I'm pretty sure I read something about vampires being immune to telepathy – though that might not have been his type of vampire. It's hard to be sure sometimes. But it'd be worth a try, and M'gann's other skills would certainly come in handy for keeping an eye on him. As would Wally, yeah. Let's get them on board if we can.

[Look, he's even saying 'we' – including her in it! And even admitting, next:] I don't really have anyone to add. I still don't know most of the DF beyond my original little team very well, certainly not as well as you do. So let's go with who you've suggested there.

Oh, there was one other thing. [He hesitates, because he can imagine this might put her off the plan altogether, but...] Nico said he might be able to talk to the soul, once we've got it back. To ask it whether it wants to go back into Spike, perhaps even get some reassurance it would do what we need it to, though I'm fairly sure it will, and even more confident now after talking to Sam. But anyway, I don't know it you think it's something worth trying?

[She nods.] I'll talk to them and let them all know they just volunteered. [There's a little smirk. The other bit though... The smirk fades as she looks thoughtful.]

It doesn't much matter, does it? I mean the soul belongs with him as far as I see it. Putting it back is taking his choice away, but maybe it's a choice he can't make without it anyway. And I think we know what the alternative is if we can't do this or choose not to. [At least she knows what she'd do. She doesn't want to. She wants to leave her assassin days behind her. She wants a better life here. A life with options.

But she can't have her people attacked like this even if once upon a time there was a Spike using up the cigarette supply who seemed like a good guy. A Spike Buffy seemed to be on good terms with. A Spike who—as far as she knew—had never hurt anyone in the dome.]

Maybe I just don't want to hear both parts of him say no before we do it anyway.

[He briefly echoes her smirk.] They volunteered the moment they signed up for the Force, didn't they?

And I don't think it would say no. The whole point is, surely, that it will be shocked to learn of all the atrocities he's committed and want to stop him committing any more. I think it could be interesting to hear what it has to say.

[He looks grim.] And even if it does say no, that's certainly not going to stop me shoving it back into him. And if it still doesn't work, then yeah, I am fully prepared to do what has to be done. I even have a volunteer to do the deed and take the rap for it from the wardens.

[She was about to say something more about talking to the soul, but the last part surprises her.] A volun... No. [It doesn't surprise her that Jack's thoughts had been on the same track. It does surprise her that he would have considered letting someone other than himself do it.]

I'll do it if it needs to be done. It's my responsibility, and I can make it quick.

[He gives her a darkly amused look.] And you accused me of not being a team player. [But he understands, because he's fighting down the urge not to insist that if Aidan doesn't get to do it, it's his responsibility. But she's made her position clear, so he just nods, and even manages a fleeting grin.]

Then the job will be yours, Madame Leader! You know, if it needs to be done.

If it needs to be done. [Can't be said enough times apparently. Three in a row is a charm? She appreciates the light air he has, but she doesn't match it. Not for this.]

Who was it? The volunteer.

[He's had a lot more practice than she has. After a century or two, it becomes easier to just pigeon-hole things into those that just need to be done and not worry too much about the morals of it.

Of course, that's a part of why he needs her in charge to question his morals in the first place...]

Aidan Reilly. Seems like Spike's really done a number of several of his friends and he's just had enough.

[She nods thoughtfully. She can't bring herself to be too surprised it's him. He seems like the self-sacrificing sort.]

He's protective of his friends. [Not a bad thing. Definitely something she and Jack can relate to.] Okay, well, you'll check with the wardens about the soul now that the points are coming in, right? Let me know how that goes.

Yeah. [There's no doubt that Jack views that protectiveness as a good thing too.]

And yep, will do. I figure I'll give it the rest of the day to make sure we have as many points as we can, just in case they try to be difficult about it, but yeah, I'll let you know what the wardens say.
