Day 275 / Video / Locked to Defence Force
[Jack appears on the screen, a glimpse of his living room behind him. He looks pretty calm, and a lot more centred than he has done recently. Finally getting the best of Spike (because even if he died, Spike still has to heal) has done wonders for his confidence regarding getting the situation settled once and for all.]

I figure it's about time for a general update on the Spike situation. I've spoken to quite a few of you about this over the last week or two, but a general pooling of information would seem sensible.

Everyone should by now be aware that five nights ago Spike went on a bit of a spree. I don't know exactly how many people he attacked, but we have reports or punishment notices for Ton Phanan, Piper Halliwell, Nico di Angelo, Martha Jones and Clay Kaczmarek. There may have been considerably more.

I haven't heard of any fatalities so I'm assuming there weren't any, since he's been pretty careful so far not to kill anyone who wouldn't come back. But if you know of anyone who got killed, or anyone else who got hurt, please let us know – and please encourage people to tell the Defence Force if something like this happens. We can't help if we don't know!

Anyway, I think I've managed to put Spike out of action for a while, so hopefully we have time to do what we need to do to make sure he's not a threat to people's safety any longer. Which means putting his soul back into his dead, demon-possessed body to give him back his moral compass.

Ladies with the magical abilities, how are we doing with the spells? Let us know if there's any ingredients or anything you need, and we'll see if we can get them for you. [One of the spells he found mentioned something called an Orb of Thesulah, and he's not at all sure that's something that can be found within the dome. But there were other spells, and he's had the magic users looking them over for him for feasibility.]

The rest of you? We need rehabilitation points to get Spike's soul back. I spoke to the wardens yesterday and they confirmed that we can pool points for it, but it's going to need a lot of them. So anyone who has any spare points, please can you let me know? Conscienti said you'd need to give consent in person, but we can deal with that nearer the time. For now, all I need is a list of people who are willing to donate points, and once I have that I can go back and ask if that's enough points for what we need. So, names, please!

Aside from that: patrol. Spike seems to have slunk off to lick his wounds for the moment, but I don't know where he's holed up and I don't know how long we have. So patrol. Look out for him or any kind of trouble that he might be behind – as well as the normal stuff, of course. Spike's not necessarily the only threat we have here.

[He takes a breath.]

Okay, I think that's all for now. Questions, comments, suggestions?

[Private video to Anya]

Hey, can I talk to you about Spike?

((OOC: Feel free to approach Jack in person rather than over the network if you prefer. He can be found pretty much anywhere in the dome: at HQ, patrolling (Sectors 0-2), in the library, getting coffee, near his apartment (Sector 4), or even going for his daily swim in the sea! :-)

Also, if you want your character to donate rehabilitation points but don't want the hassle of threading it out, feel free to leave an OOC response to that effect here too, to keep everything in one place!))

[ Dude, he's not your errand boy. ] Sure. I was just wondering how I was going to put that PhD in engineering to good use.

[Jack blinks a bit.]

Sounds like an excellent use for it to me.

You know any carpenters? Cause I might be able to make a verdict on how structurally sound it is, but I'm not going to build it.

[More blinking.] I don't see why we'd need carpenters. I'm sure we've got some rooms somewhere that would do without much in the way of adjustments. I'm thinking locksmiths would be more useful. Do we have any of those here?

Not that I'm aware of... and do you seriously think ordinary walls and doors are going to keep anyone in? Have you seen the amount of superpowered individuals we have around here?

[ No faith in ordinary doors. None. ]

I think ordinary walls and doors will keep Spike in, and frankly that's all I'm concerned with right now. I'll worry about other superpowered people once I've got Spike sorted out.

[Though there are thoughts jumbling around at the back of his mind about having somewhere they can secure people if necessary. Aidan has already planted that line of thought.]

If that's the case, I don't think you'll need my questionable expertise for a while. [ He got that PhD when he was a teenager, after all. ]

We can always look into more appropriate containment facilities once we're done with more pressing matters.

It's definitely something we should be looking into, yeah. Perhaps we can get a sub-committee focussed on the problem, once we've solved the immediate one on our hands. I've personally had enough of sitting in the library for hours scouring dusty old books for snippets of information about magical powers.

[With Spike, it was personal. He's not prepared to put in quite the same amount of effort for something that's not.]

That's what the Investigative Team is for, you know. [ What are you talking about, too much information gathering? He lives for this. ]

Maybe next time, you actually come to us for help before it goes this far. [ Conversations with Ianto comes to mind. Heated conversations. ]

...Yeah. [Little bit shifty.] I kind of didn't want to bother everyone else. It was... something of a personal crusade, for a while.

[Especially after Spike hurt his boyfriend.]

A personal crusade that escalated into a spree. [ So dry. ] I don't know how you do things at Torchwood, but in the FBI keeping important information like this from your team is cause for termination. Not to mention risking lives.

We're lucky no one died.

[That foxes him for a moment because, actually, it makes him realise he doesn't think of the DF as his team. His team is the people he knows well, the team he's put together himself like he did his team at Torchwood: Ianto and Martha, of course, because they were already in it, and the people he's co-opted along the way here, Kitty and Zatanna and Garcia. And when he just had a team of four or five in the DF, he made sure to keep a track of them, but he never really let them in on the loop because they weren't his.

He's certainly never thought of the whole Force as his team. It's just too big, too many people. So Reid referring to them as his team is a bit of a revelation and he ends up just gaping at him for a minute while his brain processes it. The fact that, actually, he's just as guilty of not reporting an attack as the people he's been moaning about to other people. Even if he feels attacks on himself aren't important, the moment Spike started attacking other peopke, he should have--]

I did tell the Force he was a threat, once I knew he was - to others, I mean.

[But it's only a weak protest. Reid obviously thinks he should have involved the Force a lot more and, well. Perhaps, deep down underneath, Jack knows he's right.]

[ He is a profiler and that makes it difficult to miss that something is going on here. What he can't tell but there's some cognitive activity, that's for sure. ]

Not much we can do about it now in any case. [ A small, reassuring smile. ] Just... keep it in mind for the future? Please?

[He lets out a breath.] Yeah. I will. [Sounding a little distracted because he's got some stuff to think through here, but he does actually mean it. Or at least that he'll think about it. Old habits do tend to die hard, though.]

Anyway. On a slightly different tack: got any rehabilitation points you can donate to the cause?

I should have some, yeah. Not that much, I don't think... I kind of blew most of them not too long ago. [ Arming himself. ] ...but you're welcome to whatever I have.

Thanks, every little counts, as they say.

[He pauses, aware that he hasn't really spoken to Reid since his return but that he doesn't really feel they're close enough for him to actually ask about it.] How are you doing, by the way? Coping all right with being back here?

[ Oh, we're talking about that now? He didn't see it coming, though he probably should've. People keep asking, no matter how much he tries to pass himself off as perfectly fine. ]

It's... you know. I'm fine. Really. [ That was convincing. ]

[Well - kind of talking about it. Awkwardly, because Jack's not any better at this sort of thing than Reid is.]

Good. [Not convinced, but not going to push it either. He's fulfilled the social niceties of the day and that's as far as he's going to take it.]

Well, I should go. I've probably got about a dozen more calls waiting!
