Day 275 / Video / Locked to Defence Force
[Jack appears on the screen, a glimpse of his living room behind him. He looks pretty calm, and a lot more centred than he has done recently. Finally getting the best of Spike (because even if he died, Spike still has to heal) has done wonders for his confidence regarding getting the situation settled once and for all.]

I figure it's about time for a general update on the Spike situation. I've spoken to quite a few of you about this over the last week or two, but a general pooling of information would seem sensible.

Everyone should by now be aware that five nights ago Spike went on a bit of a spree. I don't know exactly how many people he attacked, but we have reports or punishment notices for Ton Phanan, Piper Halliwell, Nico di Angelo, Martha Jones and Clay Kaczmarek. There may have been considerably more.

I haven't heard of any fatalities so I'm assuming there weren't any, since he's been pretty careful so far not to kill anyone who wouldn't come back. But if you know of anyone who got killed, or anyone else who got hurt, please let us know – and please encourage people to tell the Defence Force if something like this happens. We can't help if we don't know!

Anyway, I think I've managed to put Spike out of action for a while, so hopefully we have time to do what we need to do to make sure he's not a threat to people's safety any longer. Which means putting his soul back into his dead, demon-possessed body to give him back his moral compass.

Ladies with the magical abilities, how are we doing with the spells? Let us know if there's any ingredients or anything you need, and we'll see if we can get them for you. [One of the spells he found mentioned something called an Orb of Thesulah, and he's not at all sure that's something that can be found within the dome. But there were other spells, and he's had the magic users looking them over for him for feasibility.]

The rest of you? We need rehabilitation points to get Spike's soul back. I spoke to the wardens yesterday and they confirmed that we can pool points for it, but it's going to need a lot of them. So anyone who has any spare points, please can you let me know? Conscienti said you'd need to give consent in person, but we can deal with that nearer the time. For now, all I need is a list of people who are willing to donate points, and once I have that I can go back and ask if that's enough points for what we need. So, names, please!

Aside from that: patrol. Spike seems to have slunk off to lick his wounds for the moment, but I don't know where he's holed up and I don't know how long we have. So patrol. Look out for him or any kind of trouble that he might be behind – as well as the normal stuff, of course. Spike's not necessarily the only threat we have here.

[He takes a breath.]

Okay, I think that's all for now. Questions, comments, suggestions?

[Private video to Anya]

Hey, can I talk to you about Spike?

((OOC: Feel free to approach Jack in person rather than over the network if you prefer. He can be found pretty much anywhere in the dome: at HQ, patrolling (Sectors 0-2), in the library, getting coffee, near his apartment (Sector 4), or even going for his daily swim in the sea! :-)

Also, if you want your character to donate rehabilitation points but don't want the hassle of threading it out, feel free to leave an OOC response to that effect here too, to keep everything in one place!))

Would've told you a long time ago, but some people have to do th' martyr thing or whatever. [ Huff ] Weren't on th' Defense Force back then, so it wasn't much I could do m'self.

They asked you not to tell?

[He sighs. That's the kind of attitude that's let Spike get away with this for so long, because no-one reports the damn incidents!]

Their own pride, perhaps? [He does get that one, after all.]

Helix, maybe... but Lacus? I bet that she genuinely wanted t' protect him.

Huh. [He considers that, remembering another young woman who defended Spike to him like that, vehemently refusing to believe he could be a threat despite the evidence to the contrary.]

We need to put a stop to that kind of attitude. We can't have people putting other people's safety at risk just because the perpetrator's their friend.

That's what I keep sayin', but ain't nobody listenin'! I ain't even too sure we should be nice enough to keep this guy alive, t' tell you th' truth.

[ His younger self would be horrified at this kind of talk. Funny what time will do to you. ]

I think we have to try. We have to give him a chance to change. And it seems to work for other vampires, so…

So you've done this re-soulin' business on others?

Not at all. But most of the other kinds of vampires seem to retain their souls when they become vampires - or perhaps it's more that souls aren't so much of a separate entity in their make-up - and, well. We haven't had many problems with the others, have we?

[ He scoffs. ] I wouldn't say that. There's been problems before... special circumstances maybe, but this jerkface ain't th' only one.

None of th' others are around no more tho, so not much we can do 'bout 'em.

[Patiently] Okay then, tell me about the troubles you had before.

[Why has no-one told him this stuff already? (Maybe because he hasn't asked the right people.)]

...Alright. [ He draws a breath, trying to figure out where to start. ] A while back, somethin' happened that made people... emotional, I guess. There was this one guy... Eric, I think. He used t' run th' blood bar. He fed off my boyfriend an' then gave him his own blood to keep 'im from dyin'.

Earlier than that... there was Saya. She was great, usually... an' then somethin' happened that made her lose control. I dunno what all she did, but... it was pretty bad. Like I said, none of 'em are here no more but these fuckin' vampires sure can't keep their fangs to 'emselves.

[Jack's silent a moment while he takes this in.]

I met Eric. He seemed reasonable enough, but I can imagine it wouldn't take that much to push him over the edge. I take it that the extra emotions was one of the wardens' little 'experiments'? Do you think he would have been a danger without that?

[Though that's another thing to take into account, of course. The wardens' habit of mucking around with things every few days.]

I've never heard of Saya. Was she from the same world as any of the vampires we have here nowadays - just for comparison?

I don't think so. She ain't been here since we got sent off to that other prison a while back... th' one that actually looked like a prison. { He liked Saya. A lot. Even though she kind of put his boyfriend in hospital too and jesus fuck Helix you really couldn't stay out of trouble. ]

A lot of th' trouble we've had in th' past was because of some weird shit happenin' here, but even though it ain't their fault people still get hurt. I think that's somethin' we gotta consider.

[Jack sighs.] Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any kind of predictability to the wardens' little games, beyond the fact that they rarely seem to last more than a day. We have no way of predicting what they might do or how it might affect people. But you're right, even the most inoffensive of residents can become dangerous under the right duress.

I ain't sayin' we can be prepared for everythin', but if we know anythin' can happen we can at least do... somethin'. I ain't no hotshot here, it ain't my call to make but we don't even got nowhere to lock people up when they lose control.

Ain't just for our sake either. I dunno 'bout you, but if I had th' choice between hurtin' a bunch of people cause I can't control m'self an' bein' locked up for a day, I'd choose th' cell.

Well, I guess most of us would be okay just locked up anywhere for a day, since we don't have super abilities to escape, but yeah, that's definitely something the DF should look into. Maybe have some sort of check-in system on the days when things go wonky.

That's not a bad idea. I know some folks have done it on their own, but there ain't nothin' official set in place far as I know.

Might wanna take it up with Kitty. She's th' boss after all.

We've got to give him a chance. Besides, I don't know about you, but I'd rather try this than get punished for his 'murder'.

[There are also a number of personal reasons, of course, but he's not going into them with someone he knows as little as Aidan. Or anyone, actually.]

Like I told Piper — I'd be happy to take th' fall if it meant gettin' rid of him. Ain't no problem... but since y'all got such a great plan goin', I'll keep out of it. [ Yeah, he has absolutely no faith in this working. None. ]

Sure. I'll do it. [ And it's liberating to get the chance rather than being told there's nothing he can do. If it does come down to it... he will, no matter the cost. ]
