[ action | open | mingle style ] Cooking Class
[Piper had the cooking lab set up and ready to go. She was nervous as all heck, but she was as ready to do this as she was ever going to be. She found herself questioning why she was doing this, but no point in running that through her head now.]

Hello, everyone, and welcome to Cooking Class.

[She gave them all a somewhat nervous smile.]

This is a first for me, so I'm looking for a lot of feedback on this one. What are you interested in learning? What are you current skills? Stuff like that. We can do recipe courses, like what you see on a cooking show, or we can teach specific techniques for people who are looking for something more rudimentary.

[She picked up her apron.]

I have some extra aprons in the back, so grab one if you didn't bring your own. Cooking can get pretty messy, even when you know what you're doing.

[She put the apron on, and, while everyone was getting theirs, handed out a sheet of paper with a recipe on it.]

We're going to start with a simple recipe today so I can figure out where everyone is in their skill level.

{OOC: MINGLE IT UP!! I'll make a comment below so people can thread with Piper specifically. I'm also going to set up a feedback thread so characters can leave feedback. There's also a post on Piper's journal for the class where people can leave recipe requests for future classes, as well as questions for future classes about techniques.}

Excuse me, Teacher?

[ It should be a crime for Haruka to roll up her shirtsleeves and put an apron on. She makes everyone else look bad, aesthetically. ]

These measurements don't have to be exact, right?

[Piper shook her head.]

Not for this. A lot of it's to taste. If we were baking, I'd say yes. But I went for something easy to start.

Unless, of course, you're way off...

[ Haruka grins and shows Piper her bowl. It's probably enough for a dozen chickens.

What? She overmeasured one ingredient, and then compensated. ]
Not proportionally.

[Piper visibly bit her lip for a moment.]

A little overzealous, huh?

[She smiled a bit. That was a lot of overmeasuring and compensating.]

That's alright. If you want to try that one as is, we can, or we can start over. We have enough supplies. It's up to you.

As long as you trust me. [ Haruka don't give come-on eyes to the teacher. Not just because you don't want to waste her ingredients.

...Too late. ]

[Wait, what? What was going on? Piper blinked, partially immune to charming things as she was a married lady. Sorry, Haruka, but this one won't be as easy as Usagi or Minako.]

Sure. [She shrugged nonchalantly.] If you don't think you'll blow up the place. I don't want to have to explain to the Wardens why half their school is missing.

[Har har.]

For you, I'll be careful.

[ And she'll leave it at that, since this....really didn't have the expected effect. If you don't like it, she won't keep it up. Much.

At least she handles the chicken with care when it's time to start coating it... ]

[She laughed a little. She was a little flattered, but not enough to fall over her feet at Haruka. The wedding band on her left hand might have something to do with that.]

Thanks.

[She glanced around at the other students for a moment.]

Do you want me to stick around here and help you out a bit? See what we come up with?

[ ....and this is what Haruka gets for being so used to checking wrists for sex bands that she forgets to look at fingers. She doesn't feel guilty or anything, just. You have someone. Good for you!

She shrugs. ]
Don't let me keep you.

[ This is a lot of chicken. One piece slips away from her and plops down into her panko mixture. ] ...Unless I'm more remedial than I thought.

Nope. That's okay. Just try not to pick up all the chicken at once. Just do a piece at a time.

[Piper smirked a little.]

I'd start with the one that already fell in.

Good lesson.

[ You're a good teacher, though. You make it easy to understand and you keep things light. Haruka approves of this cooking class.

She flips the chicken to coat it, and manages to get a nice even coating without even trying. Pure poetry. She's totally got this cooking thing, yeah.

How hard can the rest be? ]

[Piper smiled a bit at that point, and then stood back to give Haruka the needed space. She didn't want to crowd her students.

But, she didn't go far. She was there if Haruka hit another bump in the road.]

[ Things are looking good here! It's the measuring part of this that Haruka has trouble with.

Except she keeps getting up to check the oven timer when it's time to bake her bajillion pieces of chicken, languid motions refusing to betray her impatience. She should have brought a book.

Or she could clean up after herself, but who'd think of that? ]

[Clean up can come at the end of class. Which, now that others were starting to pull things out of the ovens, and Piper had excused herself to go check on some of the other students, was coming up close.]

[ Haruka has so much chicken now. So much chicken. It hadn't looked like this much chicken until she realized people were going to have to eat it. It looks and smells good, but she's got her fork poised over a serving without taking a piece of it yet.

...oh, whatever, self. Even it's awful, it's not the end of the world.

Haruka swallows quickly anyway. ]

[As long as it's cooked enough and not too much, it shouldn't be terrible! Maybe a little overseasoned, but not terrible.

Piper came over again.]

Well, did we get the proportions right?

[She smiled a bit, watching Haruka's face for a reaction.]

Mm. [ Haruka has a fairly decent poker face. Her mouth is a bit pert right now, though. Herself as a cook and herself as a consumer apparently have two different ideas about how much ranch dressing should go into baked ranch chicken.

She offers Piper the plate and a clean fork. ]
You're the teacher.

[Okay... that didn't mean good things. Piper bravely took the offered utensil and carefully took a taste.]

Mm...

[She blinked a few times, but kept the majority of her reaction in check.]

I think we over did it on the dressing, yeah? Of course, the whole thing is to taste, and it's kind of subjective. But, we still need to be careful not to really overload it, right?

[Lesson learned?]

But the crumbles were fine. [ She's just going to point that out, though from the look on her face she agrees with that assessment. It flowed really quickly....

Still, Haruka made you eat her food. That deserves sincerity. Her expression softens accordingly. ]
I'll be careful.

Maybe later, we can figure out some ideas on what to do with the extra. There isn't anything else going on in the classroom today, and the bots can handle lunch service at the restaurant.

[ For a moment Haruka thinks Piper's talking about serving this at the restaurant to get rid of it, and that's a very uncomfortable moment. Fortunately, her brain catches up to her paranoia. You must work at, or run, a restaurant. ] So you're teaching from experience.

[She nodded.],/small>

Sort of. It's a passion of mine, and I've been gearing myself up to run a restaurant back home. [Cooking for parties, her family, basically doing all that stuff as practice.] I just didn't have the money to invest right away, but I found a nightclub in my price range to invest in that I'm using to get the money to start the restaurant.

Here, I actually took over one of the restaurants to run.
