Day 266 | open action; + open video;
[ action ]

It's been a full week since Helen realized Jean-Luc was gone, a full seven days since Ashley's birthday. At times, it's felt as though much more time has passed; at others, it feels like only yesterday and her heart breaks all over again. She's been keeping to herself more than usual. Even after she returned to work at the clinic and with the language classes, she was still having a difficult time wrapping her head around everything.

And then someone had mentioned the Memorial Gardens. It had seemed like such a simple thing, but now Helen isn't so certain it's as simple as she thought. Perhaps this is what she's needed.

Most of Day 266 can find her choosing flowers, specifically certain colored roses. These aren't to plant, more for show. For her. The flowers she chooses to plant in the garden are simple, tulips, daffodils, easy things that are very pretty and possibly easy enough to care for should she choose to return every so often. With three bulbs in hand and several roses, she takes to the earth. Once each of the bulbs is set into its spot, she places the roses over the spots where she has just planted new life. Three white roses for each of her special people, three yellow, one orange for Ashley, one pink for James, and one red for Jean-Luc. One of each color remains in her possession, as a reminder to herself of the people she's loved and lost.

After a few minutes of simply sitting there, one of those scattered showers does appear. It isn't much rain, but it's enough that she takes advantage of it. Holding the roses in her hands, she brings them to her nose to smell, allowing the sound of the rain falling to mask her tears as she finally truly weeps for three people: Ashley, her daughter, who was taken from her much too soon; James, her best friend and former lover, who had always challenged her to be the best she could be; and Jean-Luc, her lost love, whom she misses now more than she'd ever thought she could again.

[ video ]

[ later, once she's back at her apartment and a little more dry, she decides to address the network. she might not be dripping wet anymore, but she still bears the signs of having just been playing in the rain. what's noticeable this time is that the old glint of determination and confidence is back in her eyes and her voice is strong. you guys all missed the old helen. ]

I seem to have run across one of those scattered showers we were projected to have. This seems as good a time as any to remind everyone that the clinic is here for your use. I have also recently begun an Earth language studies course in conjunction with the Academy here. If anyone is interested, I am most certainly willing to offer what I know. In fact, today is one of the days I will be teaching, so please stop by the classroom if you're interested.

[ ooc: she can be encountered in action at any point in her endeavor, even while she's sitting in the rain or for the language class, or with responses to her network address. ]

Teaching a class? It's a good way to spend your time.

What language are you starting with?

[ oh, rose. she has missed talking to you. a smile crosses her face, small, but after the last few days, it means a lot. ]

It does help, even if it's only about an hour three times every ten days. [ every little bit helps, really. ]

I was thinking of Latin. It was my second language, as it was my father's favorite, but perhaps French or Italian might work as well.

[ she's missed you too, helen. there was just a lot going on with her lately and rose was trying her best to sort things out. ]

Latin. Now there's a language I don't know a lot of despite being around for a long time. [ a laugh. ] Running across Europe helped me to pick up French and Italian fairly easily but I wouldn't say I was fluent.

I think that Latin would be an interesting start. I suppose it might depend on the interest from others in the prison.

[ that sounds far too familiar for comfort. ]

I'd be happy to teach you, if you'd like. [ she offers a smile. ] I'm fluent in all three of those.

[ she's had to become fluent because of her work. otherwise a great many people wouldn't be able to understand her and her work would never go anywhere. ]

Indeed. I'll have to see who's interested in what. Hopefully, lessons will be more consistent now. [ now that she's done mourning and is feeling a lot more determined. ]

That sounds like a wonderful opportunity. I'll definitely consider it.

[ Who knows when having knowledge of different languages would come in handy in this place? ]

I think it's a good way to spend your time as well as earn yourself some rehabilitation points. [ Rose smiles. ] How have you been in general?

I thought it was a decent way to spend any extra time I might have.

[ not that she has a lot of time, but still. ]

That depends entirely on how much time you have to listen. Care to join me for tea?

[ or perhaps a glass or two of wine. ]

I would love to join you for tea, Helen. I've got enough time for a friend.

[ besides, it would get rose out of her apartment for a while. ]

Would you like me to come over now or later?

Now would be wonderful. By the time you arrive, I'll have changed into something more presentable and I'll be certain to set the water on.

[ her smile is small, but it's warm and genuine. she's missed her friend and perhaps she can talk about the things that are bothering her with someone she feels particularly close to. rose is more or less her closest friend now. ]

Then I will make my way over there as soon as I've taken care of a few things.

[ the invitation and smile were definitely appreciated by rose. maybe she did need someone else to talk about things in her life with. it just wasn't entirely easy. ]

Is there anything you would like me to bring with me?

[ helen smiles warmly at that. ]

Just yourself will be fine. I can provide the rest.

[ and she can. by the time rose gets there, she'll be in a dry change of clothes with the water on for tea. her hair is still damp, but at least she's not dripping wet anymore. ]

I'll see you soon then.

[Rather than using her vampiric speed to get to Helen's a lot faster, Rose just walks at a normal pace to give the other woman more time to get ready. Apart from that, she needed to think and zipping across the prison wasn't going to let Rose achieve that.

When she arrives outside Helen's apartment, she knock on the door a few times and waits patiently for Helen to answer.

[ and though she doesn't need to, when she opens up the door, helen issues an invitation inside. ] Rose. Come in. [ it's as much a formality as it is a symbol of their growing friendship. rose is always welcome in helen's home.

she steps back to let the other woman in, shutting the door after her. for a moment, helen pauses, a gentle smile on her face. and then she does something she doesn't normally do: she moves to embrace rose. after everything she's been through recently, after the double loss and the memory of the other, she needs to know she isn't alone, that it's still okay to have a friend or two here. ]

It's so good to see you. Thank you for coming.

[ the embrace from helen was unexpected, but rose wraps her arms around her in return and hugs her gently, taking comfort from it for as long as it lasted. perhaps she needed it more than she thought. ]

I am so glad to see you, Helen. Thank you for the invitation. [ she gives her a warm smile. ]

I think I needed to get out of my apartment.

[ helen takes a breath before she pulls back and offers another smile. seeing her friend is very good for her. it's been a rough few days. perhaps this one will be better. ]

Of course. [ and that whistle in the background is the kettle. she turns to lead the way into the small kitchen and pulls the kettle off the stove. ] I hope you don't mind Earl Grey. It was the first thing I reached for.

[ actually, the earl grey reminds her vividly of jean-luc, as it was his favorite tea. she just happened to pull it out and now she can't imagine drinking anything else right now. so she'll just pour tea for herself and wait until rose gives the okay or not to pour hers. ]

How have you been? We haven't exactly crossed paths in some time. [ and that is as much a tsk to herself as to rose. ]

No, I don't mind at all. I actually like that blend of tea. Or any blend really.

[ coffee helped with the cravings moreso than tea but rose did enjoy the taste of tea, believing it to have a calming effect upon her. ]

I've been okay for the most part. There are a few personal things I've had to deal with in recent days and it's been difficult.

[ she hesitates, afraid to expand upon what she mentioned. it was, after all, something that involved another person. someone who mightn't appreciate rose telling anyone else. but helen didn't seem to be the type to betray another's trust. ]

That sounds like my own week. [ really it does sound far too similar to her own time of late to be comfortable.

as she pours the tea, she glances at her friend again. she's like a locked box when it comes to secrets; if someone tells her something in confidence, she will not betray that trust. no one will learn of it from her and as far as she's concerned, this meeting counts. ]

Everything all right?

[ she's also open to rose asking her what's been going on in her own life lately. that's part of the reason she invited rose over, after all. ]

[ rose doesn't answer her straight away, looking down at her hands for a few moments. where does she even begin? things were a lot more complicated than they were when she first arrived. ]

Not entirely. I don't even know where to start.

[ or if she wanted to say in the first place. ]

[ helen pauses long enough for the tea to steep, removing the bags once it's all ready and bringing the cups to the couch in the other room. there she offers milk, sugar, and whatever else rose might want in her tea as well as a spot next to her on the couch. ]

It's all right. You don't have to tell me. [ mostly she's asking out of concern for her friend. concern... and sympathy as well. ]

The last few days haven't exactly been kind on any of us. Jean-Luc and James disappeared about a week ago, so I admit I've been rather isolated since then. [ she pauses again, swirling her tea around before taking a sip and continuing. ] I'm sorry I haven't been there for you recently.

[ rose follows after helen when she brings the tea into the sitting room and takes a seat beside her on the couch so that they could talk. ]

Don't apologise, Helen. I'm sorry that they are not here anymore, I know how much they meant to you. [ she reaches out to settle a hand on helen's forearm. ] I don't blame you for wanting to have some time to yourself.

[ her tea is forgotten for a moment or two while she spoke. ] If anything, I should have been there for you instead. I apologise for that. It would just be nice if things would run smoothly for the both of us here.

[ helen places her hand over rose's and she gives it a squeeze, as much of gratitude as of reassurance. ]

I think, in this instance, we both needed a little time. Perhaps now we can make up for lost opportunities.

[ aka let's not dwell on the past and instead focus on the present. ]

I'm simply glad you're still here. [ especially since so many of her friends seem to have gotten pulled away from her so recently. ]

[ she gives her a grateful smile, touched by the gesture. helen's kindness went a long way for rose. ]

Yes. Absolutely. I would love to make up for them in whatever way I can.

[ rose won't argue. not even a little bad. ]

You don't know how glad I am to have you around. Really. [ rose takes a sip from her tea to disguise any emotions, not wanting to burst into tears on helen. ]

You're incredible.

[ for her long lifespan, helen can appreciate a good friend. she's a social woman by nature, much as she tries to pretend she isn't, and every close friendship means something. this is why she holds on so dearly when she finds someone who understands, who stands a chance of living even half as long as she will. rose's friendship means as much to her as rebekah's did and she wants to hold this one for as long as she can.

she takes a sip of her own tea as she debates how to phrase her next words. ]

I've had five lifetimes to grow, to understand the world and the people and beings that inhabit it. I thought I understood so much, but since coming here, I've learned that I understand very little other than how to protect and how to be alone. [ she was lonely and bitter when she met jean-luc and rebekah. they changed her. and now rose is helping that change stick. ]

Now, I've come to realize that... perhaps the good and the bad events are intertwined. Perhaps we can't have one without the other and wishing the negative emotions wouldn't happen undermines the power and strength of the good that happens. [ thank you, data. she owes him for that bit of insight. ] I think I've needed to hear that for a good hundred years or so.

[ she isn't trying to undermine rose's compliment. right now, she's trying to put words to the mess of emotions she still feels over the loss of jean-luc and james so close to ashley's birthday. what she means to say is: ] Close friends are difficult to come by and I've been remiss in letting mine know how much I appreciate them.

I think you're right about that. Gives me a little bit of hope that even when things are really bad, the good will come to make everything okay again. [ helen put it a lot more eloquently than rose did but she understood the message that her friend was conveying to her. ]

There's nothing for me back home. I lost everything when my friend died; he was more like family really. [ she takes a moment, collects herself before continuing. ] But I came here and I meet people like you, and it helps. You've been an amazing friend to me, Helen. I don't say that enough.

[ they've both experienced pain and heartache countless times. helen had been hit recently, rose could see that. she wouldn't blame her for being distracted.]

I know how much you do care about others. I've witnessed it first hand. Sometimes, you just have to take some time for yourself to think things over before wanting to talk about it with someone else.

Whatever you need from me, whenever you need it, I'll do what I can.

[ data's words made an impact on her and she's trying to give it to someone else who could benefit. for a moment, she glances to her friend as rose speaks. helen understands feeling lost like that. she'd felt lost like that here recently, as though there was nothing for her, but she'd never quite felt it as strongly as when she lost ashley. this had come close and she's sorry to hear that rose feels she has nothing to return to. all she can do now is be a friend to her, be the support they both need. ]

I hope the same of you. Even if it's just to come over for a cup of tea and a little companionable silence. I'm not here to pass judgment -- God knows I have no room to. As long as I'm here, you will always have a friend.

It was a lesson I should have learned after I lost Ashley, but it took another hundred years and being kidnapped to the bottom of an ocean for it to sink in.

[ yes she did just make that pun. intentionally. ]

[ a soft smile forms on her lips. rose doesn't feel as sad now. ]

I have come to realise that tea and company can work wonders, even in a small way. [ she pauses for a moment. ] I'm the last person who can judge anyone either.

[ not after everything that rose had done in her life or done to other people. but she was trying her best to make up for it. ]

Not the most ideal way to come to a realisation but at least you did in the end, Helen. I don't know if that helps or not.
