DAY 265 ✯ OPEN VOICE.
I would advise against interacting with the Polygeminus grex that have infiltrated the prison population. They are non-sentient lifeforms from a relatively uninhabited planet in the Beta Quadrant. On their homeworld, their numbers are controlled by a number of natural predatory species they are the primary food source for, but without their being prey, their numbers will expand. Polygeminus grex reproduces asexually; they are born pregnant and can bear an average litter of ten every twelve hours. If they are allowed to persist with uncontrolled breeding patterns, then we will likely have a population well into the thousands by the end of the day — millions by the end of the week.

Seeing as the wardens do not appear to be taking the proper measures needed to control the Polygeminus rex population, risking punishment in an effort to do so ourselves is preferable to not doing anything at all.

Are you suggesting killing them? [The thought has occurred to her, but she's not a big fan of it. Wiping out fluffy bunny-ish things feels more wrong than right.]

Yes.

[ honestly, the human inclination towards things that are furry will forever escape her. ]

[Some of it is just an aversion to killing in general, but her blades had plenty of raptor blood on them not so long ago, so maybe it is the mammal thing. Then again the raptors were also all too happy to attack them.]

The wardens made this mess. Just because they haven't announced a plan to clean it up again doesn't mean there isn't one. We aren't at a point where that's necessary. [Yet.]

[ the idea of killing the tribbles - while incredibly rational, if what seven's saying is true - is also a bit horrifying. seven's blunt rationality about it might even contribute to said horror. ] We're not going to kill them. [ you're kidding right. ]

[ horrifying, but necessary. tribbles are to the klingon homeworld what cockroaches are to earth. ]

They are needless pests who do nothing but eat and breed. In a matter of days, they will have 'eaten us out of house and home,' to borrow an antiquated phrase. Exterminating them is the only viable solution.

[ elena's not going to argue whether they are pests or not. but. ] I'm sure there are other options. [ besides mass extermination. ] They can be neutered, right?

Sign me up. Things aren't going to be looking good if we're all out of food down here and I'd rather take them out than eat them. [Is there anything but fur in there?]

They would be of poor nutritional value if you did.

[ In reference to this thread with Elena here ]

I'm all for getting rid of them. I've collected three sackfuls of tribbles and I'm going to drain them of their blood and store it all in the vampire shack for business purposes. Supposing these things have blood? [ Oops. Failed to check first. ] Otherwise I'm all for stomping, burning, whatever works.

[ The feeling is so very much mutual. Except he thinks she's being a little too adorable with wanting to save a bunch of faceless, useless furry creatures. It's so typical of her. ]

I'm not going to kill your nameless furball pet, Elena. But I'm so getting rid of his great great grandpas, great great grandmas, great uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers, sisters, the entire family.

I don't want to, but I have to. [ No, he doesn't. ]

[ well, she does understand the need to keep a population small and that sometimes killing them is the only way to control numbers and thus keep the risk down, she doesn't particularly enjoy that option. ]

You may be right, but let's hope we can find another option first, all right?

[ these things are seriously reminding her of the nubbins, though much less dangerous on the whole. or so they seem at the moment. ]

There is no other option.

[ her voice is firm, resolute. she knows these creatures, possesses intimate knowledge of them. they are from her world. why are those who are not insisting on finding alternative ways to handle them instead of trusting her judgement? ]

Are they particularly dangerous or is the threat mostly to their food supply?

[ she has her reasons. but really, it is sounding like the nubbins and if that's the case, then she'll admit defeat. she doesn't want to unless they've exhausted all other options, though. ]

Mass extermination is your solution then?

[Her tone is neutral despite what she was referring to. She knows that the prison being infested with the creatures wouldn't be good in the long run. Even so, there may be other options available.]

It is the most efficient means of dealing with the problem they present.

[ other options, while possible, aren't necessarily viable in her borg-laden mind. they would take too much time to develop, to orchestrate, and by that point, the polygeminus rex may very well have run them out of house and home. literally. ]

I really hope they have a backup plan with this... I'm not entirely sure how we're going to get rid of them when they multiply at this speed. Especially since we can't exactly stop feeding them without somehow containing them first.
