[ It's now or never and although he was hoping that some time would push that towards now rather than never, Reid really doesn't feel like he's ready. He feels raw and exhausted and although he's pushed himself to go out and get some clothes that aren't borrowed from Karev's closet, he's so not in a place where public announcements are possible.

But he has to. Now or never. Movements dull, he reaches for the communicator. ]

[Yesterday was rough for Kitty. Rough like getting hit by a train is rough. After many, many drinks and even more tears she'd finally passed out—fully clothed—against ex-boyfriend Tyki Mikk. She'd peeled herself off of him early that morning—head throbbing and body unwilling. She wanted to just stay. Stay in bed. Stay away from the world and the artificial sun and whatever the day had planned, but she couldn't. She had to keep walking as Allen said. Even if she tripped and stumbled along her path every now and then.

She'd been out of contact with any DF business for about half a day so she decided she should check the network. She didn't expect much really. Veridical's announcement gave her pause, wondering if they should figure something out for dispatch, but it's the next thing she hears that stops her dead in her tracks.

It's his voice. Even through the static she'd know it anywhere, but today? It's not a new arrival day. Is it a trick? Is this a "distortion of service" somehow? Her heart feels unsteady. Beating faster and slower at the same time. There's even a slight tremble in her hand as she goes to connect the signal. She sets it to private, but it doesn't stick and she doesn't notice.

If this is a mirage she's still got to run toward it.]

Where are you? [Her voice is about as rough as the day she had yesterday.]

[ He's not surprised that she's the first to respond. Never expected anything else really and still it makes his stomach turn, two different lives clashing in that handful of words. There's a stretch of silence, probably too long for comfort but then he forces himself to respond and he forces himself to sound, if not normal then at least okay. ]

[Too long. Much too long. She can feel all that emotion stirred up in her again. Boy, you let yourself cry once and you really do feel like you might never stop. She doesn't want to be out here like this in public. She wants to be moving, but she missed the most valuable part of that. Her voice sounds a little desperate when she responds.] I didn't hear that! [It scares her when the line disconnects even if it's for the best because it was on the fritz and she'll see him soon because... What if she won't? What if it is a trick and that's all she had? Couldn't she at least have just a little more?

She puts all that need into just moving faster and she reaches the theater quickly, eyes darting around until they find him. She finds him. He's here. He's real. He's back.

There are a dozen smaller things she registers too. His hair is different. There's some extra bulk under one sleeve. Things aren't exactly as they should be if he was returning as is, but she can't focus on all that right now. He's here. And very little is going to stop her from throwing her arms around him and holding tight.

Even if she is obviously a mess with bed hair, rumpled clothing, smelling of alcohol. She thought maybe she said something before hugging him, but anything that would have come out just stuck helplessly in her throat.]

[There's a new pang of worry at the way he winces, but when he hugs her back—weakly as it is she just lets it happen, careful to avoid his suspected arm, but still holding tightly around his waist. She'll hold on enough for the both of them.

She shakes her head when he says it's okay. It's a lot of things, but it's not okay. So far from okay. He's about to feel warm, wet tears against his neck that show just how not okay it's been. After all, he's never seen—or felt—her cry before.]

[ Oh no, don't cry. Don't. He can barely handle this, how is he going to handle her crying when she's never done that before in all the time he's known her? Not when Cross was crucified, not when Allen disappeared or they fought or... or ever. She's never cried and now she is in such unmistakeable ways that it doesn't break his heart, it grinds it into a fine paste.

He rubs at her back, trying to be soothing. ]

[She nuzzles against his neck—slick with tears now but she just wants to feel his skin. Smell him. Fill her senses with him. He's back. He's back. He's back and he remembers. Once the tears slow and the sounds she makes are mostly just her lungs remembering how to function smoothly again she pushes herself to make words. She just makes them the most important words she can think of.]

I love you.

[ She may be calming down but those three little words hit like a punch to the chest, forcing him to draw a shaky inhale and then hold it just to keep himself from breaking down. He never got to say it. She did and he failed to grab the opportunity and now she'll never hear it.

It should be easy to respond after all that time together, but it's everything but that. He bows his head against her, voice cracking. ]
