It's a beautiful morning. Good morning, to old friends and to new. One more day will complete our first week here, Deanna and I. A lot seems to have happened in that short time; losses that some of us have felt very strongly, and we've made new friends, people that I hope to get to know better in the coming weeks.

I'd very much like to use this opportunity to meet more of the inmates here, and perhaps to speak more frankly with some of you those that I've already met, now that I've had the opportunity to get a better understanding of my surroundings. If anyone would like to speak in person, or join me on the ice, I'll be spending the next few hours at the ice rink in Sector 3. From what I hear the sparkly costumes are obligatory. [ There's a distinct sparkle to Riker's eyes as he speaks. ]

Private to Helen Magnus

I'd like to speak to you, or perhaps schedule a meeting for later if you're busy.

Private to Deanna

We should talk about your progress--and perhaps you'd like to watch me flounder? It's been a while since I put on skates, and some of these costumes are...very daring. You wouldn't want to miss out.

Private to Seven

Do you skate? [ He doesn't say 'Do the Borg ice skate?' It's a subtle but important difference. ]

Action:

[ Riker can be found watching as the day's events begin to take shape on the ice rink, pawing thoughtfully through the selection of sparkly outfits and watching the others who come to show their interest. He seems to be very invested in everything, intensely curious and very good natured considering - as he said - that he's been here less than a week. ]

[ It's interesting to hear the brief story from her. Riker is only really aware of the EMH in regard to the present use of photonic lifeforms...and then there was Barclay. Still, running an EMH for as long as Voyager did, troubleshooting all its issues--he's sure Geordi would love to get a look at his holomatrix. ]

Only if you'd like to try it. I learned to skate back in Alaska when I was...four. I could skate before I could run without tripping over my own feet. But it's been a very long time. I'd be happy to show you the ropes.

[ he'd have to get through seven, her captain, and the entire crew of voyager first. they were all very protective of his holomatrix, and the doctor was given free reign to add and subtract from it as he wished. he was a sentient program, an individual, someone who had the means to wander about the ship and off of it as he pleased, thanks to a little detour through time. he was a hologram, but he was also a person. just as much of a person as data was. ]

We did not have ice on Tendara, but I am willing to make the attempt.

[ perhaps the first time she has referenced where she was born, but she's actively trying to relate. tendara was a very warm planet, covered in lush green grass and fertile plant life. she has very vivid memories of running through thick fields of green, but none of ice. ]

[ Tendaran colony, that's where she's from? He smiles at the gift of that knowledge, and reminds himself to ask her about it while they skate. ]

In that case I'll see you by the ice. You may even find that you enjoy it.

[ when seven arrives at the rink, she's understandably bundled up. even without her youth on a warm planet, her body doesn't respond well to colder temperatures. the borg can function in the cold emptiness of space (in fact, she has very vivid memories of standing on the outer hull of a borg cube without the need for an environmental suit), as well as the frigid climates of cooler worlds. but they prefer the heat, and still being part-borg means she prefers it as well. the cold, snow, and ice hold no novelty for her. ]

Commander.

[ He might have found something ridiculous to wear before then, so is thoroughly underdressed. And sparkly. He's out of his blades for the moment, though. ]

Please. Will is fine. You're not a member of Starfleet, you don't have to address me by rank.

[ you're not a member of starfleet. she's aware of this, yet having it pointed out rubs her the wrong way for reasons she doesn't entirely comprehend. it's an irrational irritation and she knows it, but back on voyager, captain janeway went out of her way to make them all feel as if they were part of starfleet in spite of the fact that half the crew was maquis, and those like herself and neelix were of no alpha quadrant affiliation what-so-ever. yet they held important, high positions on the vessel and sat with the senior staff. she had authority over members of the crew and a say in shipwide decisions. they were all held to starfleet's standards. irrationally, the reminder makes her feel a touch powerless. unimportant.

and a lack of power and importance rattles the cage of the parts of her former borg nature that she cannot seem to shake. ]

I am uncomfortable with informalities.

That's not true. Seven is an informality, isn't it? A nonsensical shortening of your entire title?

[ It's a curiosity, and he phrases it as one. He doesn't understand, and he's asking Seven why this specific informality brings her discomfort. But he adds: ]

If you'd prefer to call me Commander Riker, I won't stop you, I'd only like to know what part of it makes you uncomfortable.

[ To tell the truth, not being a member of Starfleet will probably be her saving grace once she returns home. It makes her a civilian, and civilian rights are out of Starfleet jurisdiction. ]

[ if only the writers of the post series novels had the ability to remember that, but remembering details of the franchise you're writing for is hard ]

Captain Janeway felt my full designation was too Borg. We agreed upon Seven of Nine after I declined to return to using my name. [ data uses it, but that's different. new and different, something she had to adapt to and is still adapting to. ] Seven is an informality made commonplace by members of my crew who felt it necessary to shorten my designation out of fondness and a desire to make me feel like I belonged.

As for my dislike of informalities, I am Borg. Was Borg. I do not enjoy the chaos that informalities bring, the uncertain ground that one finds themselves standing on when interacting with others in an informal setting. It is... unsettling.

[ she tries, but there's always going to be bits and pieces of her personality that are too borg to ever be human. it's an unfortunate consequence of her unconventional, horrific upbringing. ]

Because it is unpredictable. Where if one Borg asked another how they felt, they might reply with the temperature constant of the room, the air pressure, and its chemical composition. But among individuals, 'How do you feel?' is infinitely more complicated. It isn't good enough, and the logical answer is no longer the right one.

[ He's making an effort to understand, and he smiles at her again, reciting from memory. ]

Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One. [ He inclines his head. ] It sounds important. In Federation records, the system which includes Earth is Sector Zero-Zero-One, nevermind that both the Federation and Starfleet often defer to galactic records of starfaring races that had been exploring the stars hundreds, sometimes thousands of years before humankind.

So I suppose my question is: Is it? Important, I mean.

The question is irrelevant; Borg do not feel.

[ she had no tangible concept of the word while she was still a drone. seven remembers being in pain after they severed her connection to the collective, disoriented and frighteningly alone, but having no proper definition of words that used to be so familiar to her in childhood to apply to what she was "feeling" at the time, because she didn't know how to feel any more. it took her months to grow accustomed to the concept in the wake of her liberation.

a slow nod, the tightening of her lips. it is, but not in ways he will enjoy hearing. there is only one federation vessel other than voyager that is familiar with any sort of notion of the focal point of the hive mind, and that's the enterprise-e. a queen was aboard their ship for some time during the attempt to unravel history, after all. ]

Drones in my subunit worked in close contact with the Collective's central nexus.
