It's a beautiful morning. Good morning, to old friends and to new. One more day will complete our first week here, Deanna and I. A lot seems to have happened in that short time; losses that some of us have felt very strongly, and we've made new friends, people that I hope to get to know better in the coming weeks.

I'd very much like to use this opportunity to meet more of the inmates here, and perhaps to speak more frankly with some of you those that I've already met, now that I've had the opportunity to get a better understanding of my surroundings. If anyone would like to speak in person, or join me on the ice, I'll be spending the next few hours at the ice rink in Sector 3. From what I hear the sparkly costumes are obligatory. [ There's a distinct sparkle to Riker's eyes as he speaks. ]

Private to Helen Magnus

I'd like to speak to you, or perhaps schedule a meeting for later if you're busy.

Private to Deanna

We should talk about your progress--and perhaps you'd like to watch me flounder? It's been a while since I put on skates, and some of these costumes are...very daring. You wouldn't want to miss out.

Private to Seven

Do you skate? [ He doesn't say 'Do the Borg ice skate?' It's a subtle but important difference. ]

Action:

[ Riker can be found watching as the day's events begin to take shape on the ice rink, pawing thoughtfully through the selection of sparkly outfits and watching the others who come to show their interest. He seems to be very invested in everything, intensely curious and very good natured considering - as he said - that he's been here less than a week. ]

If you are inquiring as to whether I have been a member of the Terran genus Raja, I regret to inform you that no, I have not.

[ it's a joke. get it — rays, skate? she believes her statement was humorous, at least. she's trying. that counts for something, right? ]

[ He breaks into an even wider smile, eyes shining bright as starlight--maybe it's just the gleam off the ice. ]

Raja. That's funny, Seven. You're really getting the idea.

I never claimed to not. I understand the concept of humor just fine, Commander. In fact, I often find the habitual antics of humans to be quite amusing.

[ but her quiet smiles of brief amusement are often hidden, her chin tucked in against her chest as she ducks her head while working at her console. humans can be such silly, ridiculous things. sometimes, she chooses not to pay any attention. ]

The Doctor has encouraged me to work on my sense of humor. He would be pleased to know that the attempt was satisfactory.

I can't be convinced not to fish for advice in that department myself. I'm naturally curious, what can I say? Doesn't this place have some sort of rules about that sort of thing?

It does. Do not pass go without one of these. [She lifts a wrist into the frame to show off her blue wristband.] Red means you can have some fun with anyone else with a red band. Just not all the fun. Blue is kind of a contract between two people. [Pause] Actually, I think it could be for up to three. But whatever, it means you can have all the adult relations you want as long as it's with just them.

The rules are printed out so you can find them here and there around the dome or pull them up from the computer lab or on your communicator.

[ he's lucky he's asking this of her today and not yesterday or she wouldn't be so willing to speak, let alone offer a visual response. however, if he was expecting to be greeted with the same teasing and amused woman he first met, he'll be in for a surprise. while today doesn't see her with red eyes like yesterday, her expression is tight, controlled, and there's no hint of a smile to be seen. ]

Of course. Somehow I have a feeling this might be a discussion better had in person. Would you agree?

[ she thinks she knows what this is about and as much as she doesn't want to have this conversation at all, she would much prefer not to have it where prying eyes and able hackers might see it. ]

Of course. [ she's working extremely hard not to allow her voice to crack. it's... mostly working, but the emotion she's holding back can just barely be heard at the edge of her words, there for anyone listening particularly hard. ] Whenever you'd care to spare the time. I've nothing to interrupt at the moment.

Do these kinds of clustered retrievals happen often, Data? Not just from our reality, but perhaps from others? I've noticed that people who have been brought here often seem to know each other, such as ourselves, making not just the reality suspicious, but some sort of--my first guess would be timeline related. [ A pause. ] Actually that's exactly what it reminds me of: Old Earth temporal physics.

[ That an object is effectively a medium of time travel, and its set timeline moves about in space interacting with other timelines, and effectively creating a web that touches every place in space and time. If one were to theoretically travel down one of those lines, it might be possible to come into contact with each of the people brought here from each reality, from where their timelines bounced off each other: for instance, the Enterprise had been the first ship to reach Voyager when it returned from the Delta Quadrant. The connections were there, and the flash of good intentioned energy in Riker's eyes betrayed his excursion into a proper philosophical challenge. ]
