[ day 253 ] action :: open
[ Option One ]

First thing in the morning, Jean-Luc stops by the Defense Force headquarters to check in. He makes a habit of this every other day or so, just to see if he's needed in any manner but his usual patrol duties. So he can be found here with a fresh cup of steaming tea. He probably won't remain for long though, so catch him while you can if you need him.

[ Option Two ]

As often as he frequents the library, he should probably set up residence there. A home away from home, sort of thing. But nevertheless, he is at the library again. He's perusing the bookshelves, for the rare novelty of a book from another world that Earth. He frequently finds them in this place, as the prison does pull people in from everywhere. And this is his own personal way to continue his exploration of the Universe. Books, after all, are one of the most obvious founts of knowledge. And we know what people say of idle minds...

[ Closed to Helen Magnus ]

Jean-Luc has packed a dinner for both himself and Helen. He had sent her a message to meet at the stables later in the afternoon. He's in the stables, saddling up two horses, one for himself and one for Helen. A bag settles on the ground at his feet. He's in full riding attire. But yes, he has accepted that this meeting of theirs is an actual date. And he's okay with that.

[ As he isn't accustomed to taking orders from very many people, he views Kitty as he would any Admiral in Starfleet, a position he has declined on more than one occasion. And he offers her the same respect that he would anyone in that position as she hasn't given him any reason to treat her otherwise. That means he deals with her with a certain amount of decorum. ]

Yes, of course. [ The tea is left behind and his hands clasp behind his back as he follows her to her office. ]

Thanks. [Kitty's been a leader for awhile—longer than one might expect for her young age. Of course back home it was more of a dual leadership in a training facility. Things are different here in more ways than one and some days she's still surprised she's at the top of the Defense Force ladder, but here she is leading people with way more experience back to her office. She gestures to a seat and takes one herself once their in.]

I don't get the feeling either of us are much for small talk, so I'm going to jump right into something. Data told me about the issues you were having. Are they still occurring or was it resolved?

[It's not just a matter-of-fact question for her though she states it more or less like one. They may not know each other well, but he's on her team and that warrants concern for him, not just how he might perform.]

[ He sits carefully in the chair she indicated, relaxed to begin with. But he bristles a bit with her question that seems quite personal to him. And his brow furrows with the fact that Data had discussed his problems with this woman he hardly knows. Not that it had been a huge secret, but it certainly didn't need to be discussed with someone who didn't understand what had happened or why. He'll have to speak to his officer about that. ]

I assure you that all is quite well. The matter has been resolved.

[She notices the bristle, but just nods.] So, why didn't you tell me?

[ Her question surprises him as he hardly knows her outside of patrols and this building and therefor had no reason to come to her with such a personal matter, one of which he only understood after he was already too far gone. ]

It was a personal matter, Ms. Pryde. My crew had it well in hand once they knew what was happening.

Data doesn't strike me as a gossip. Seems like if he thought he had a reason to tell me then there was a chance it was a personal matter that could have interfered with your duties here.

People from home, they aren't your only crew now.

I did miss one day of patrols, yes. [ But at that time, Locutus was in charge and couldn't be bothered with the Defense Force. And afterward, the situation was resolved. ]

Nevertheless, it was a situation that my crew from my home was familiar enough with to attend to. Very unique in nature.

It's okay to miss. I just need to know what's happening. For the rest of the team to be covered in case there was an emergency and for you since you're part of the force. We might've been able to help.

Listen, I know what we have here is a weird situation. Some people come here completely cut off from the people they used to know and some don't. I don't know how well I would have integrated if my X-Men were here. Probably not very, so I get it. They're the people you know and trust.

But with all the people arriving and getting lost it's important to have a structure that can keep working on getting everyone out and keeping this from happening to others. If we're going to make a go at the wardens we need to work at being a team not just a collection of individuals and insular teams.

[ Jean-Luc shakes his head. No, they wouldn't have been able to help in this instance. But he does understand why she is saying what she's say, at least from a leader's standpoint. Even if she doesn't fully understand what was happening with him or even know him all that well, really. He understands it. ]

I assure you, that should a situation arise in which I realize that I am incapable of fulfilling my duties here on the Defense Force... [ One in which he realized it was happening before it was too late and he was no longer in control. ] ...that I will make a full report for you and the Defense Force. What happened was by no means a conscious attempt to keep you out of the loop or uninformed.

I fully agree that we need to work together. And I am always willing to do my part and fill in where necessary. One missed day of patrols as my team righted a personal wrong does not change that fact. You have my full and undivided cooperation toward the purpose of maintaining a peace within the dome and in any endeavors to... 'make a go' at the Wardens.

[She nods, accepting that answer. She has more questions than answers when it comes to what was going on, so for all she knows he couldn't have told her before and after, well, how much would she have wanted to go to Suzaku or Gino with her problems after the fact? She just wanted him to know he could.]

Thank you. I'm not exactly clear on what happened, but I'm glad it's better now, and I won't try prying in on it. [If he wants to talk, she'll listen, but she can keep her curiosity reigned in. Probably.]

It wasn't the only thing I was hoping to talk to you about today. [Just the most awkward...probably.] We should talk about the sector 6 combat team too. [Currently consisting of him, Aradia, Krieg at this time, and herself as leader.] It's a rough sector—dangerous even just to patrol. You've been handling it well. [For someone without powers she thinks, but manages not to say.]

I've been thinking of making some changes to our goals with that particular sector since it's not like any of the others. I could see you playing a part in that. I could also see transferring you to another team where your leadership experience will be better utilized so I wanted to discuss both options with you and see what you thought or if you have any ideas of her own. [There's more to say about what she's thinking of course, but she wants to let him get a word in too.]

I wonder where and when exactly you're from, Ms. Pryde. [ He realizes now that they know very little about each other. And he will seek to rectify that over time.

As she shifts topics, however, he listens intently. His training with Starfleet served to keep him adept at traversing any number of terrain and climate. And aside from said training, actual experience in several different worlds had done the same. He had been grateful for that training and experience here within the dome and in sector six.
] I have had some of the best training and experience in the universe. And in spite of my age I am in excellent health. [ He offers a small, amused smile, because he is quite old by most standards he's learned. But in his time people live much longer. ]

I must say I find the constant unknown of sector six appealing. But also, should you require me in a leadership position, I would be most willing to comply as as you've stated, I do have plenty of experience in such a position.

[She smiles a bit at him wondering about her.] Chicago, Illinois. Earth. [Well, a suburb, but when you have to start bringing up which planet just in case you might as well round up to the largest city.] Late 20th century. [But they can get into that more later.]

I wouldn't say require exactly. It's not bad having a leader back up [a number one?] for my sector in case I have to pull away to deal with the force as a whole. And fight now the sectors are all covered, but you never know when that might change.

[She pauses thinking about her plans for Sector 6.]

I'd like our team to do more reports on what we find in there. I'm not sure how the other two will do at that part, but they're tough. Heavy hitters. [Even though Aradia is an even younger girl than Kitty she's the most powerful one of them.] I have a feeling it's something you'd excel at though and we need that information to distribute to the rest of the force and maybe the rest of the prison in case there's another breakout. We could also use some...good will in there. We can't communicate with them yet, but maybe it's just a matter of finding some common ground to start from. We don't need the sector 6 inmates all thinking we're out for blood. [There have been deaths in there already.]

I have quite a bit of experience in mediating, diplomacy and initiating first contact, even with species whose means of communication we did not initially understand. [ He nods, surprised that he had never considered trying to speak with them. He supposed they had seemed more beast than sentient in nature. But perhaps that was not the case. ]

I am more than willing to try to learn their language should they have one.

Thought you might be. Also thought you might be a good liaison for our findings to the investigative team. The better for them to investigate without being in harm's way.

Does this sound good to you then? Better than potentially heading up a team?

[ Honestly, he would rather explore the unknown than lead. Jean-Luc, while a very adept leader, was always always the consummate explorer. It brought him to life more so than leading ever could.

He nods and offers her a small smile, his eyes sparking to life at the prospect.
] I would prefer it, actually. And I will perform such to the best of my ability.

[She's gotta respect his enthusiasm for it.] I know you will. I still don't want any of us going in there alone [and though she isn't saying this at the moment, she is thinking this goes doubly for him since he's the one without powers.] but I think for now we'll consider patrols in that area exploratory information-gathering missions.

Still dangerous though. Do you have any experience with weapons?

[ He would argue that he's gotten by quite well with any number of species with amazing powers and abilities without any of his own. But he also understands the need for caution in any respect when it comes to contact with any unknown. So he nods. ]

I am well-skilled in combat. Starfleet has combat training in any number of weapon types as well as hand to hand.

Do you have one here? A weapon? Something you've made or tried to request? [She knows they aren't exactly easy to come by, but not impossible even if it took some magic and technical know how to bring hers into creation.]
