day 245 [ video | backdated | open ]
While many who knew her are already aware, it nonetheless seems prudent to inform the populace at large that Seven of Nine is no longer present in the facility. It is likely that she had a number of acquaintances, outside those with which I am familiar, for whom this information would be relevant.

[ And if you happen to be acquainted with Data as he is in the facility, you may notice something missing in his words. Those from the Enterprise crew could likely tell you exactly what it is, as his speech has reverted to the perfectly even, controlled tones they knew well for so many years. ]

I am sorry that I must bear this news. Her absence will be noted.

[ ooc: hey marinades, I'm on hiatus this month so forgive the lateness of this post and any slowtagging that may ensue ]

[ A small nod. ]

It is unfortunate; she is an individual with unique and valuable abilities.

[ Yes. That's all. ]

At present, I can only hope that she has been returned to her rightful place, rather than suspended in the dimensional stabilizer as the wardens claim.

[ Quickly slipping on a privacy filter. If he knew about Data and Seven's actual relationship, he would offer more empathy. Alas, he does not. ]

We can hope, but... that's unlikely, knowing what we know.

[ It is a good thing someone's emotion chip is not on right now - though, of course, he's really just delaying his responses instead of actually avoiding them. ]

I have been given the impression that hope is not dependent on likelihood. Many seem to believe that the act of 'hoping' should be sustained in spite of a relatively small chance of those hopes being realized.

[ But he does arch a brow. ]

However, may I ask you to elaborate?

It's not in any official records... yet. [ So the fact that he's even mentioning this means he trusts you to keep it on the low, low down. ]

I have a theory that the prison is actually a form of virtual reality.

[Hearing Data with that voice just... isn't right. Not anymore. Maybe once it was expected, but for Geordi, to hear it now is a stark reminder of how much Data's changed and grown, and how he's literally turned that growth off, reset it. However temporarily Data intends to nullify his emotion chip, Geordi isn't terribly pleased with it.]

[It's not that he doesn't understand, and empathize with, the reasoning. The Captain needed them, first and foremost. And Data, new to the strong emotions that come with relationships like his and Seven's, might have found the grief overwhelming. There were times Geordi wished, fleetingly, that he could turn off his feelings: the disappearance of his mother's ship and the false hope he had of finding her, the loss of Tasha... and, now. He and Seven hadn't shared the closeness she shared with Data, but she was a friend and someone whose absence is sharply poignant, both because of what Geordi had come to know of her and because of what she meant to his best friend. To hear Data so flat is almost worse than hearing him in pain, because Seven, and the relationship she and Data shared, was worth grieving over.]

[The Captain is doing better. So the time has come for Geordi to do what best friends are supposed to do -- help his friend through this the right way.]

Hey, Data. [Whenever after his announcement Geordi manages to find Data in their apartment, he takes advantage of the opportunity to offer Data a cup of coffee and a sympathetic ear. It's not replicator quality since he brewed it himself, but hey. The ear is more important than the drink.]

[ It's not difficult to figure out what Geordi wants to talk about - the coffee, obviously, is being employed as a gesture of comfort. Requiring neither caffeine nor warmth, and not subject to thirst, there is no other purpose that it could be intended to serve. And clearly, logic would follow that, as his best friend, Geordi would consider it his responsibility to offer guidance and comfort through a difficult personal time.

Truth be told, Data has every intention of reactivating his emotion chip. Intellectually, he already appreciates that negative emotions are a portion of the human experience that he strives to attain - and that refusing to feel them outright would undermine those positive emotions that had been associated with his relationship with Seven, would cheapen the validity of that relationship. Taking the step of reactivating the chip, however, is a daunting task. At first, it had been practical - now it's simply a question of whether he's prepared to face the emotions that will be waiting for him whenever he does allow himself to experience them again.

He gives a small nod. ]

Geordi.

[ And he takes the coffee, accepting the offer of comfort as part and parcel of the heavily symbolic beverage. ]

Thank you.

[Geordi can almost see Data's hears turning, eliminating more mundane reasons to offer a hot drink and arriving quickly at the obvious conclusion.] No problem.

Mind some company for a while? With everything that's happened, we haven't had a chance to talk. [This time, he'll skip subtleties in favor of putting a fine point on it. The time he came hanging around Data's quarters after his mother's disappearance springs fondly to mind. A more explicit track here can't hurt, even if Data's grown a lot since then. Enough to have a romantic relationship, and to understand that losing Seven is going to be incredibly hard.]

[If only intellectual understanding were enough. Part of Geordi does indeed want to spare Data the pain of grief but that simply wouldn't be right.]

[ There's an arched brow, but a nod along with it. Because he's currently operating on intellectual thought alone, there is no great emotional struggle against having the issue dragged out of him. The problem with turning his emotion chip back on is likewise intellectual, anticipating the degree to which the emotional responses are likely to interfere with his functions and how effectively he will adapt to them. The brief experience he had gotten, before deactivating the chip, was certainly adequate to judge by. A micro-fraction of a second, after all, is all he needs. ]

No, I do not mind.

[ And then both of his brows arch, with a sideways quirk of his head. ]

I would inquire as to the topic, however - I believe I can anticipate that.

[A wistful smile as he takes a seat nearby.] I figured I shouldn't bother being subtle, considering who I'm talking to.

In all seriousness, Data, I think we should talk about Seven. And I was thinking maybe we might do at least part of it with your emotion chip turned back on. [Processing this will essentially be useless without the feelings to go with it.]

[ helen had noticed seven's disappearance during the time they'd been trying to help jean-luc and while she doesn't know the extent of seven's place among the enterprise crew, she does know seven was important to them. she assumes seven was especially important to data, as he is the one making the announcement. so she decides to say something, in the hope that she can help, even just a little. her own emotional exhaustion is still fairly clear to see. ]

I had noticed her absence. Perhaps she'll return someday.

While I would hope for her to return to the facility, the ideal outcome would be that she were returned to her rightful place.

Either, clearly, would be far preferable to being lost in the dimensional stabilizer.

Then let us hope that she is returned somewhere other than the stabilizer. No one deserves that fate.

Are you all right?

Definitely noted. That's too bad she's gone. [Kitty hadn't gotten to know her too well, though through the magic of this wacky prison she did know a bit about Annika. But she'd had an easy respect of the woman. She wouldn't have minded knowing her better. Maybe would have liked it even.]

Were you...crewmates?

We were not members of the same crew, but we appeared to be from the same reality of origin, serving aboard different ships in the Federation.

[ If not the same, then their timelines were very closely similar. After comparing notes, it seemed far more likely that they were the same, but one can never be entirely certain. ]

We had not been acquainted prior to arriving in MarinaNova.

Sir, I am certain that you are aware that it is not necessary for you to thank me.

However, I am... pleased that you are well.

[ It's genuine - the hesitation is due only to the lack of actual emotion in his current state of being "pleased". ]
