[Eric has been in a panic since he was woken by the incredibly distinct lack of the squishier emotions inside of him. He couldn't feel Sookie or her emotions and that had been a void deep enough to awaken the dead. Literally.

A check of all his abilities assured him that he was still a vampire and there was no physical reason for the bond to be broken. After a daylight search that had left him with a case of the bleeds and a certainty that Sookie was gone whether he wanted it or not, he'd gone to the Blood Shack. Walking into the familiar building had given him some hope. Sookie's scent still lingered there, but it was residual and nothing new. He walked to the bar, sorting through his emotions in the most distanced, analytical way possible in an attempt to control a rage and a pain that he'd only experienced once before: during Sookie's 'vacation' to fairyland. He filled a glass with blood and took a sip. That sip was enough blood to fuel the rage that bubbled so close to the surface even on a good day. The self control that Eric was so terribly proud of crumbled and the vampire broke apart in ways that he'd forgotten was possible.

It was easy to forget that Eric could be a weapon of perfect destruction. He was good at smiling and pretending. He was excellent at maintaining control of a frightening strength and rage. He was good at hiding the fact that he felt the negative spectrum of emotions so much easier than the positive ones. Through his bond with Sookie, he was able to tap into her emotions, able to feel them as if they were his own. He had gotten accustomed to what happy felt like and the complete lack of it left far too much space to fill with rage and anger, loss and pain. He hurled the glass of blood at the wall and screamed at the top of his lungs. There wasn't anything human or controlled about the way he began ripping things apart, tearing the building to pieces as an outlet for rage he didn't want to feel. It was difficult to tell because blood was still seeping from his eyes, ears and nose, but those were also blood tears running down his face.

He had so few people in this world he would weep at the loss of. The dome had managed to take away one. ]

[ Well, Caroline has never seen Eric cry or really... show any other emotion besides smugness and a smile. Okay, maybe a tiny bit of frustration once or twice. But yeah, she didn't expect this when she came into work, the sound of shattering glass, then his scream.

Then it was the sound of things being destroyed, she rushes inside the bar, her eyes wide--]
Eric! What's going on?

[ His first answer is an unintelligible roar of pain. He wouldn't like the comparison, but he probably sounds a bit like a wounded animal. He grabs the first thing he's able to lay hand on, which happens to be a chair, and throws it hard enough that the thing is shattered into splinters. ]

They took her! [ Because he refused to apply such benign words as 'Sookie is gone' to such a life altering event. ]

[ Yeah, she's never seen him like this, it makes her think of Damon on his worst day or even... Klaus. But this is Eric and she knows he won't hurt her. Still, she moves away from where he 'tossed' the chair because wood splinters aren't exactly great for her complexion.

He doesn't need to say much else, she understands immediately. It's Sookie. She's the only one who he'd be like this over. Her heart sinks and a thought briefly flits into her mind, about how Sookie and Elena might be somewhere together. It's stupid and untrue so she focuses on what's at hand.]

Eric, you have to... stop. [ She moves towards him, slowly, like you would a scared and angry animal. She won't bother asking if he's sure, of course he is.] Please? We'll figure something out.

I can't just stop! [ it's a roar, but she can probably detect a hitch in his voice. Eric is dangerously close to breaking down, walking right on the edge of that and the last time he broke down, he would've stood in the sun with his maker if it hadn't been for Sookie. He loves Caroline, but he's not sure that it's enough.

He doesn't make a move toward her. He has no intention of trying to hurt Caroline. That is not to say that he wouldn't take his pain out on someone else, but that someone else wouldn't be Caroline. ]

She's gone. All the--[ He stops, trying to put into words something that is entirely emotion. ] I can't feel her, her emotions. There's...nothing. [ Which isn't entirely accurate. What he means is that there is nothing to combat all the anger and pain and disgust he feels so naturally. There's only Caroline and he's never had to latch onto her like that before.]

[ Caroline honestly can't imagine what it feels like. She's been in love (and is in love whether she can admit it right now or not), but this is different, being connected like that, by emotions. And to have that connection severed? What would it do to Eric?

She doesn't let her nerves show, she trusts him but she knows better than to be off her guard. Vampires are unstable when overly emotional, they feel everything more than any human. She moves towards him, shaking her head.]

You can't give up hope, Eric. People come back all the time. I know... I know that it feels impossible, all of it. But it can happen.

[It feels as if he's been abandoned, cut off without his senses, left raw and open and empty, craving and aching for something that he can't work hard enough for, kill for or attain through any means except someone else's grace. He feels alone and for Eric who has never in a thousand years been alone, it is terrifying. He doesn't and has never handled terror well as it's an emotion he hasn't had to feel in centuries.

Before Eric had fallen in love with Sookie, he would have snorted at the idea of vampires feeling everything more than humans, but he'd only had experience with a familial sort of love. He'd only felt negative emotions and yes, they'd been intense, but he'd never considered that he felt them more than humans then he'd fallen in love with a blonde wisp of a mortal girl. He'd been willing to move heaven and earth for her, had tried to do just that when she'd been in fairyland. He would give her up to put her happiness before his. He'd even sever the bond between them if that's what she wanted. Yes, he would agree with Caroline, now, that vampires felt more than any human.

At the idea of hope, he does break a little, shoulders dropping as he swallows hard, accepting that he has no choice but to be vulnerable in front of Caroline. ]
What if...she's not...

[ The next word is so soft that she might not hear it without her vampire hearing.]

mine.

[ When she returns, he means because there are points in Sookie's life that no matter how much Eric has believed from the moment he saw Sookie that she belonged to him, she had very different ideas about their relationship. ]

[ The problem (if you can call it that) with Caroline is that she is young, that hope still wraps itself around her heart warmly, that she can still hold out for the chance that those they care about will come back to them, whole.

She doesn't know his whole story but she knows a lot of it. And she knows that Eric isn't someone you get close to easily, that he used to be a harder man, the sort of vampire Caroline would run away from instead of be drawn to, be warm towards.

She notices the tension in him lessen, the sound of his voice making her heart break as she moves to close the distance between them, her hands moving carefully to touch his arms. It's her job now, to lift his spirits with hope that could very well be false.]

She's always going to be yours in your heart. I know that's corny but it's true. And if she comes back and there's something different? Then... you can just start it all over again. [ With the tone of her voice, she sounds wistful, as if that would be some sort of amazing adventure: falling in love again.] You help her fall for you all over again.

[ It's a problem simply because Eric knows that one day Caroline will lose that hope. It's impossible to live for as long as he has and maintain hope of any kind.

He doesn't push her away or move away or even flinch. In fact, the touch of her hands on his arms is welcome. It reminds him that whether he can actually tap into them or not right now, he does have emotions that aren't full of anger, loss and pain. He cares about Caroline enough on his own, without borrowing from her emotions, that he's aware the emotion is there.

The hope may be false, and Eric is wise enough to know that, but it's something he can hold onto for now, something to keep him from completely flipping out and turning that destructive nature on innocent people.

As for her words, they are corny and true. The loss of Godric was enough to prove them to Eric and it's not the same sort of love, but it's the same concept. Eric swallows hard, chuckling bitterly as fresh blood tears well up in his eyes. ]

I had to get amnesia to make her fall in love with me the first time.

[ Caroline may hold out longer than most, she is, after all, the eternal optimist. Although the root of that optimism is good old fashioned denial, not that she'd ever admit that.

The sight of the blood welling up in his eyes is unsettling, a tiny voice inside of her speaks of being grateful that she doesn't have to cry blood, considering how much crying she's been doing since she got turned. Regardless, she doesn't flinch or pull away at the sight, she merely leans over to the bar, grabbing a napkin to gently dab at the drying blood already on his face.]

You don't need to do that now. You just need to remember what about you she likes, remember the man you are and were, just be the guy she fell in love with. [ she pauses] As long as you're okay with that guy.

[ People like that are necessary, even if Eric's very cynical opinion is that it's foolish.

He's probably covered in blood at this point from the bleeds and tears. The blood tears do make everything look a little more macabre than normal, human tears would. He bows his head, making it a bit easier for her to get some of the blood off his face. He smirks at her words. ]

That guy would get me killed back home. It nearly did. [ Which isn't to say he isn't okay with being that guy here. Just that he's not comfortable, that it takes something unusual to bring that guy out and that it goes against his nature. She's right, Eric doesn't get close to people easily and he doesn't let them get close easily either, especially not as close as Sookie got. This would be an excellent example of why he tries to keep his distance. Letting people in makes one vulnerable in more ways than one. ]

It might be the death of me here. [ In an entirely different way than it would've been at home.]

Good thing you're not back home, huh? [ Because she liked him as he was, maybe Sookie would too. Caroline was, to her credit, stubborn when it came to people, she gave them chances, pushed them to be their better selves. Smiling softly, she tries her best to get his face clean but it's going to require water.]

It won't kill you here. I won't let it. [ And while she's by no means tiny or vulnerable, the fact that Caroline is offering to protect the much taller, stronger, older vampire, might be hilariously endearing or even foolish.]

[Eric hesitates because with Sookie here, he would've agreed with that statement. He'd thought it more than once. He'd even expressed it in different words in conversation. However, despite the mess that his world is in back home, despite the fact that he is preparing to let Sookie go back to being that girl in the white dress, to having a life without him, at least his world has Sookie in it. At least there he has his own cocky belief that Sookie will come to her senses one day. He knows that somewhere never far away there is a girl in a white dress that is capable of falling in love with him. He doesn't have that there. He has to keep it in his heart, to borrow Caroline's idea. He doesn't know if that's enough to be more than the man who kept humans changed in the basement. Godric had told him and shown him that humanity in a monster was possible, but Sookie had given him a reason to want to be more than a monster. ]

I don't know if that's enough. [ yes and on any other day, it would be an image that would give Eric a good chuckle, but the truth is he needs protecting most of all from himself. Caroline could be just the person to do that. ]

[ It's not that here is better than home for so many of them. But somehow, she feels like she can actually breathe here. But she's got people she loves, she's got people from home. Even with Eric here, if the rest of them went, she'd feel pretty lost too. But she wants to make sure that Eric doesn't get that way, that he doesn't lose heart. ]

It has to be, [ she insists softly and yet there's a firmness to her voice that says that he better believe in her because she means what she says.] It will be okay. It might take some time but it will be. And in the mean time, she could come back.

[ For Eric and Sookie, this was a chance to be with each other without the stress and strain that home would bring and for that, he wouldn't have traded all the pain in the world. Eric knew from the moment he fell in love with Sookie that any time he did have with her would be finite. Of course, he also always imagined that eventually he would turn her, against her will if necessary and one day she would thank him for it, one day in the far future when they had eternity to forgive each other.

As for how he finds his way here, he doesn't know. He hasn't a clue. He is trying to cling to Caroline. He's trying to cling to the idea that he has a business to run, but the truth is, his business will run whether he's in charge or not. He knows that he can't lose his mind and kill everyone in sight. He will be punished for that, and there's a part of him that longs for that. ]

[ liz's presence here is an entire accident. she normally likely wouldn't be here until later in the day, but for some reason she'd wanted to drop by, just to see how things are going now. her feet take her in the direction of the blood shack, but it's the sound of things smashing inside that draws her fully in. she rushes forward, her police training preparing her to stop whoever it is from vandalizing this place.

when she sees who that person is, her eyes widen in shock and surprise. ]

LEAVE!

[ He screams the one word with more anger, more fury than one person should be able to contain, but then that's the problem, isn't it? He's not containing it very well. However, it's obvious that he's not just angry. He's upset. He's covered in blood, he might even be crying if one were to recognize the blood leaking from the corners of his eyes as tears.

Despite all of this, there's no attack made toward Liz, no sign of physical aggression. ]

[ so she's been faced with an angry vampire before, but never has she wanted to be the one to talk said vampire down. today, in this dome, drops another "first" for liz forbes: the day she holds her ground against somethingone who could very easily snap her like a twig as she tries to help. like a friend. ]

No. I don't think that's a good idea.

[ her voice is strong, calm even though her heart and nerves are both racing. eric is a friend of caroline's, and maybe even a friend to liz by now, and she's not going to let him destroy himself for whatever reason he would find. he's really reminding her of damon and it's with that in mind that she quickly bends over to grab a couple pieces of splintered wood. they aren't the best weapons and she knows she's no match for eric's strength, but they'll do in a pinch. she doesn't have her gun, so this will have to be enough. ]

What happened?

[ If he'd had any real desire to hurt her, he would've attacked her then and there. Wanting Liz to leave was more about not wanting anyone to see him this way. Later he will appreciate the way she's stood up to him. It's one of the qualities he admires in humans and that he sees rarely.

he doesn't begrudge her or blame her for wanting a weapon, though unless she caught him unawares the weapon is laughable. It's not something he's inclined to share regardless of the situation.

at her question, he takes a deep, heaving breath. it's painful to say the words, to remind himself of a fact that is indisputable. he knows it in his very bones, smells a lack of it in the air. ]

[ the makeshift stake is more for liz's peace of mind than actual usefulness at this point. it's something to help her feel better about standing her ground against him. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what he means and she again feels the sting, the pull of wishing she could help and knowing she won't be able to. there's nowhere to search in a place like this. once people are gone... they're gone. ]

I'm sorry. [ she understands that sort of pain. it's respect for him that has her keeping her distance now, not wanting to push too far into his personal space in such a sensitive situation. she's no good at things like this, but just as when elena left, she knows she has to try. ]
