[ Locked to Lacus Clyne ]

Do you have a moment?

[ Locked to Kitty Pryde. ]

Hey... we need to talk. [ Wow that sounds scary, let's defuse that. ] It's work related.

[ Open Action ]

[ Anyone keen on bumping into Reid today can easily find him at the library, the Defence Force HQ, Bean Crushers in Sector 4 or en route to any of these places or the apartment complex in Sector 2! ]

I understand. You should do what's best for the defense force. [Whether she agrees or not is moot since she's resigned her position with the team.] I hope he'll prove himself worthy of staying.

In the meantime, is there anything I could do to help him?

There is something that could be worth trying... I did it somewhat successfully with Helix, but I don't think I could earn Sougo's trust enough to do it myself. You'd probably have a better chance.

In psychology we talk about something called operant conditioning. It's fairly simple — by using encouragement or punishment, you can increase or decrease behaviour. It's not as harsh as it may sound, it can be something as simple as expressing disappointment or disgust at unwanted behaviour. He puts a lot of faith in you, so I believe you could have a good chance of succeeding with this method.

[Another nod, and though her body language probably screams to Reid that she's not thrilled with the idea, she is considering it seriously. It's not that she doubts Reid's suggested methodology, but rejecting Sougo on any level would be difficult for her.] Yes, that makes sense. Presuming I'm around long enough.

[Not pessimistic by nature, it might be surprising to hear her planning for the worst. Kira's disappearance has her thinking about people vanishing more than normal.]

[ It's not always pleasant or easy, but it is a successful technique. Not guaranteed to work of course, but what is? If anything, it's someplace to start and if Lacus has as much sway over Sougo as Reid's been led to believe, maybe it's all it takes to avoid a disaster. ]

Lacus... [ Softly. He'd expect that kind of exclamation from someone else, but not from her. ] How are you doing with all this? Have you had time to take care of yourself?

[She pauses, then shakes her head with a soft smile. Not in answer to his question; seemingly at herself for saying such things aloud.]

It isn't something anyone should be concerned about. I imagine all of our minds drift there more frequently than we would like. [Disappearances are common enough, here. No one hasn't lost someone.]

No matter what I may endure, I will weather it. I worry more that Sougo would come to believe he could not manage himself were I to leave this place -- or, possibly, use my disappearance as an excuse not to try. He is strong enough, but he does not believe that.

[ He nods a little — it is something that occupies their collective consciousness pretty much constantly, and with good reason. It's just a matter of handling it correctly and he can certainly not say that he has any answers to that question what with his own abandonment issues. ]

Does he have any other friends here? Someone that can help you?

[A moment of thought about that. Aidan would be the best choice, but he's having struggles of his own. He would help, of course, but perhaps it would be best to wait just a little while.] He does. I'll be sure to speak to them.

I thank you for your efforts, Doctor Reid. I'm glad to know more about him, even if the news is rather mixed.

Of course. I'm only happy to help... and if there's anything else you need me for, please let me know.

We're all in this together, after all.

[She smiles as a way to avoid replying to "we're all in this together." She can't believe that anymore, as nice as it sounds.]

I will. And for my part, if I notice him being a danger in such a way that the Defense Force should know, I won't hesitate to speak up. [as much as that would pain her, the greater good prevails.]

Thank you... I appreciate that. [ Should go without saying really, but he knows it never does. ]
