Evening 241 } Action } Open Mingle
[ As mentioned by the wardens yesterday, Eric is hosting a costume party. The Blood Shack is lit by candles for the evening (he remembers the last party he had being interrupted by a power outage) and a small buffet of sorts has been erected. It furnishes mostly hors d'oeuvre and finer foods, things that Caroline picked out as Eric hasn't a clue about human food.

There is blood on tap (naturally) as well as a full bar. Eric has made certain to include water, sodas, tea and various non-alcoholic drinks.

The jukebox is playing a variety of music, but patrons are always invited to pick out their own music. The dance floor has a disco ball and there's the ever present 'dancing' pole on stage if someone gets brave. Tables are scattered about as are sofas and chairs so that people have a choice where they sit.

Enjoy yourself, mix, mingle and admire everyone's costume and everyone is required to have a costume in order to be here. ]

[ooc: I've turned off replies so if you want Eric's attention please tag his thread. Mingle here, have fun and be merry? Everyone is invited, including and especially newbies. ]

[ Dexter is certainly not one for parties, but he's been exploring as well, and a crowd of people packed into a place called the Blood Shack is, likewise, enough to grab his attention. He's grabbed some garb he's a little more comfortable with - a button-down with a subdued enough floral print to not be tacky, and some khakis. If anyone asks, he's a tourist.

Just like I hope to be - a brief stay, the memory of which drifts away once I return home and fall back into the routines of everyday life. And every night life.

The group of people is a bit much for him, as is the music and the general sense of revelry. Lucky for him, he spots one of the few familiar faces right off the bat which allows him to duck out of the assorted chaos of a mass social gathering. Maybe meeting in the center isn't going to pan out. ]

Still exploring?

Hey! [he says, a pleasant greeting that's only slightly too enthusiastic for a stranger.] Yeah, I saw the costumes and got curious. Interesting place, isn't it?

[Of course, the costumes weren't what caught his eye, but... Well, even if his grand plans are necessarily on hold, there's no sport in giving it all up, is there?]

It's great to meet you-- you know, in the flesh-- even if I wish it was under different circumstances.

[This is the truest thing he's said to anyone today.]

[ It does seem a bit too enthusiastic - but to Dexter, a lot of people seem too enthusiastic. It's certainly not the strangest thing he's seen today, either. ]

It is... interesting.

[ It's also crowded. And loud.

He arches his brows, pursing his lips as the corners of his mouth quirk into a tight, mirthless smile. ]

Yeah. Nice to meet you, too.

[ One sharp breath. ]

Find out anything interesting about our less-than-ideal circumstances yet?

Not too much, other than that most people don't seem very bothered by the fact that this is a prison.

[Which actually, he kind of understands, since it doesn't seem to be much of a prison at all, but it seems strange that there's not more moral outrage. And certainly as a totally innocent and upstanding citizen he ought to feel some moral outrage, probably.]

But, [he adds, leaning in and looking off toward the bar with a flicker of feigned uncertainty,] I think some of these people are actually drinking blood. I thought it was just, you know, part of the decoration, but I'm not so sure.

[ He might have shared some thought on the prison commentary - a report of the general feelings towards the place he's picked up on, the advice he's been given to make himself comfortable, the people who have spoken with more apparent displeasure toward the wardens, but the blood. That grabs his attention. He recoils there, in an unusually genuine reaction, furrowing his brow and curling his lip up. ]

Drinking blood? It's not completely unheard of, but it is unusual. Definitely inadvisable.

[ And quite obviously looking around with attention toward any glasses that enter his field of vision. ]

Though there are plenty of things that can look like blood - getting a good look at the viscosity would help, seeing how it moves and coats in the glass...

I don't know, you're the expert. [He says it without cracking a grin, but oh, he's grinning inside, because Dexter will see the irony and won't know it was intentional.] It looks real enough to me.

If I had somewhere to run some tests on it, I could try to get a sample. Figures I left my forensics lab in another reality.

[ Still, I'd like to get a good look at it. If it's human, this certainly makes for an interesting twist. ]

Would you really be able to learn anything helpful from it?

[He's goading, a bit. Keeping the conversation on something interesting. Blood is always interesting, and he's got the depressing feeling neither of them will be shedding any in the foreseeable future.]

I mean-- it seems like a nice enough place, aside from that. There're regular drinks, too, though I'm a little leery... You know.

Whether or not it's human, whether they've cut it with anything to prevent coagulation, whether it's carrying any pathogens... there's a lot of information hidden in blood. More interesting than helpful, maybe.

[ He's pretty well enamoured at the moment, clearly - though he does manage to glance with a little shrug of what he purports as sympathy to Rudy. ]

The stakes of cross-contamination did suddenly get a lot higher.

Eechh.

[He pulls a face, disgust that's only mostly feigned. Blood doesn't bother him-- not even, quite, the subtle and subconscious way it bothers Dexter-- but he has no interest in ingesting it.

But being appropriately horrified is the normal reaction, he thinks.]

Definitely going to have to go somewhere else for dinner.

[...Maybe cracking jokes is a little less of a normal reaction.]

Well, at least it explains the name.

[ That small, hapless smile. Maybe he's a little too okay with the blood thing, but scientific fascination with blood is one thing he's always been able to write off as career-related. It makes sense, at least to most people. Not all of them, of course... ]

Still up for steak, or is that too bloody for you now?

I guess so. Curiosity killed the cat, right?

[It makes sense. Perfect sense.

More sense than you know.

He rolls his eyes at the question. He wants to pull off the normal facade, sure, but he's also going for a certain degree of likeable.]
