day 241 | voice/action
[Arriving at a strange place isn't new to Catherine Halsey. Her life has been full of odd occurrences and this shouldn't be any different. But it is, more mysterious than anything else she's been through. Prison? Again. Not rightfully so; hasn't she served her time? Hasn't she suffered enough, properly atoned without being put in a jumpsuit?]

This isn't the chain gang...

[It's muttered as she fumbles with the device, starting up a voice communication.]

To anyone who is listening: An explanation would be helpful, something more relevant than what I've received, a detailing of events and the essence of this situation. Additionally... [She pauses.] ...if anyone is near gardens and a series of greenhouses, I require physical assistance as well.

[Because newly arrived, stolen away only minutes after her life-saving amputation, she is now stuck in a greenhouse with a rather stubborn door.

At least the view is nice...?]

[ life here is cruel like that. liz is beginning to think the wardens have some sick sense of humor. ]

I understand. It might help to know that everything here is free. Free for the price of life imprisonment, but there's no money system that I've seen.

A very, very small comfort.

[Very.]

And we're not charged with theft?

Surprisingly no. You'd think they'd have a points system or something set up for that. We've got something like that for requests, but I still haven't used that. [ she shrugs. ] Everything else seems to be restocked daily and it's free as long as you don't break any of the other rules they've set up.

I don't plan on breaking any rules, but I won't stand for being herded around or looked down upon. I've dealt with that enough.

[She's starting to wander, however, exploring absentmindedly.]

I think a lot of us have and we're happy to help each other if we can.

[ speaking of... ]

There are clothing shops around, if you'd like to get out of the jumpsuit.

I appreciate the effort you've made so far. No one is in a blind panic... I'm surprised.

[For a moment, it looks as though Catherine might sigh. She doesn't, though.]

Yes. I've been told there is clothing, and once I've finished a few things, I'll be looking for it. I'm limited on my mobility, and something more comfortable would help my situation greatly.

Maybe they were on Day 1, but it's long past that now. And the place has a lot of comforts you wouldn't find in a normal prison.

The Row is this way. [ she points in the right direction. ] It's a good place to start.

Comforts. Creature comforts, I assume, and not those of the emotional or psychological variety.

[She looks in the direction she's been pointed.] It might be best if I take a walk and explore the area myself. Is there anything I should avoid?

More or less. They said group therapy was supposed to help, but I don't see how it did.

[ really this place is just special. ]

Not really. There's an adult store in this sector [ yes that kind ] and I'd stay out of Sector 6 entirely for now. Sectors 2, 3, and 4 have apartment complexes.

Formalized psychotherapy. You weren't exaggerating? If rehabilitation is their goal, I can see why they might consider it, but it's ineffectual if the parties aren't willing and open.

[Because they sure as hell better not be trying to indoctrinate or otherwise mentally and psychologically control them here. She's had enough exposure to that to last a lifetime.]

We aren't assigned a room or cell? That's better news than expected. Is there any distinct difference between the sectors with regard to quality of the living accommodations?

You'd be surprised what they're apparently willing to try here, but at least for the most part it's not that invasive.

[ not for the most part, anyway. ]

Not that I've seen. They each have their good and bad points, but they're less bad and more different. You'll have to look into each one on your own and see what you think.

For the most part. My optimism will spring eternal.

[SARCASM forever. She doesn't have optimism anymore, anyway.]

I'll do that.

[She's not very chatty, but she's not very happy, and she seems to be distracted by something.]

[ liz just nods. she understands. ]

You're welcome to look around and familiarize yourself with everything. If you need anything else, I'll see what I can do.

Don't bend over backwards for me, by any stretch, but I'll thank you for any answers you can provide. I know the questions are going to be endless for some time.

[And Catherine feels small, vulnerable, but she can't help it. None of it can be helped. She'll just deal.]

We've all been in that position before. If I can't answer them, I might be able to point you at someone who can.

[ she won't blame dr. halsey for any of that, really. she remembers what it was like when she first got here.

but if that's it, she'll nod and let catherine be on her way. if not, she'll gladly try to answer some of those questions. ]
