[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

I understand that is a most common difficulty. I am certain that it does not reflect on your ability to parent.

[ He frowns a bit. ]

If I may inquire - is your daughter present in the facility?

[ she's not so sure about that. ]

Yes. [ and because it's not really a secret, she adds on: ] Caroline Forbes.

Ah.

[ A nod. ]

I do not believe I have had the pleasure. Though I do believe that if either of you must be here, then it is fortunate that you are both present. While I cannot say being imprisoned is ever desirable, I believe it is made far more bearable by the presence of those for whom one cares most.

You're probably right. She's been here longer than I have, but I'm glad I can... be here at all for her. Hopefully, you've got someone familiar here, too.

I do. While I do not have family present, technically speaking, I do have friends here who I would, without hesitation, consider to be my family.

It is of great comfort, as I am certain your presence is to your daughter.

Sometimes having those you consider family is just as good as your actual family. [ maybe even better. not in caroline's case, but in the case of liz's jackass of an ex-husband. ]

I hope you're right. I'm trying to be a better parent to her, but it's hard to relate to what she's been through. [ the whole situation is awful, but at least they're talking at all. at this point, liz will take the small victories. ]

[ In many ways, Data considers it better - the Enterprise crew is far closer to him than any of his actual family. That, he can offer a nod to without hesitation.

He tilts his head curiously, brow furrowing lightly. ]

I believe that your self-awareness and the effort you describe are indications that you are making progress in the right direction. [ He's trying for his own brand of analytical, honest comfort here. ] Have her experiences growing up been extremely dissimilar to your own?

[ liz gives a soft and fully derisive snort at that, rubbing at her temple with one hand. ]

We're opposites in so many ways. She was always more of a... girl than I ever was. She was Miss Mystic; I didn't even want to be on the court. I guess that's why I ended up being sheriff.

[ and yet, caroline ended up dying and being turned into a vampire, the one thing liz was trying to protect her from. ]

[ Miss Mystic? Court? Data is certainly not following this statement to the correct conclusion. He definitely is aware that it's probably wrong, which is why he's so visibly bewildered when he questions his erroneous conclusion. ]

"Court?" I do not believe I understand. Your daughter is involved in a judiciary body?

[ liz shakes her head. ]

No, that's more my neck of the woods. Miss Mystic Falls is a pageant our town usually has, where eligible girls compete for the title using what they've done to... better and serve the town. I think it was supposed to promote community service, but I always saw it as a waste. [ she shrugs. ] I'm glad Caroline won. It seemed to make her happy.

[ Then he gives a slight nod. That makes... a bit more sense, even if the culture is clearly disparate from most he has been experienced. ]

Ah. I understand.

It would seem that the stated purpose is an admirable one. If it did not live up to that purpose, then that is unfortunate. Regardless, I believe that putting aside your own biases for your child's happiness is notable.

[ data, you have no idea how true that last statement is. ]

She's all I have left. I have to. I was trying to protect her for so long that I lost sight of what's really important. I guess I've been trying to regain that here.

Regardless of our situation, I do believe that taking advantage of what opportunities we are given is always advisable. In your case, I do not believe there would be any more commendable.

[ Data just happens to admire parenting greatly, okay. ]

[ parenting is hard. like really hard. maybe someday she'll be comfortable enough to explain what she did to caroline, what happened, and why she feels responsible. it's a big ugly mess and probably won't fix itself anytime soon, if ever. ]

Thank you. I just hope it's enough.

[ He gives a nod, with a slight smile. ]

It is evident that you are quite invested in your role in her life. As I have been made to understand that this is a vitally important aspect of parenting, I believe that your success is likely.

[ And of course, he has not introduced himself - which has not escaped his notice. ]

And I must apologize that I have not introduced myself properly. My name is Data.

Well, that's one vote of confidence farther than I was.

[ she offers a small smile to show that it means a lot to her. ]

I doubt I've done much, either. Liz. [ here, she offers a hand. ] Nice to meet you.

It is a pleasure, Liz.
