[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

I think this wins for (saddest) cutest thread by the way

[ Hei palmed the piece of paper, gaze watching the others as they spoke their piece, answered his question. There was too much sharing going on at this table. ]

You must have missed him greatly while he was gone.

[ Hei tried to smile reassuringly, because he knew, eventually, that she would have to kill him. She had told him as much only a few days prior. He knew this must not have been easy on her.

But he looked at the paper, and wrote a simple "yes" just beneath her query and slid it back towards her as he reached for one of the treats in the center. ]

I don't think I missed "him" actually, for the first years. I didn't know him. I likely missed the company of another, the connection to someone.

We were different from the village that had taken us in. [And most never missed an opportunity to remind her of that.

She bides her time, to avoid being overly conspicuous, before jotting down her next question to send, "And you stayed at her side?" She's not interested in those candies at all, instead curling around her tea more after taking another drink from it]

but what if the teacher sees them...

[ Hei took pause, fingers stilling against the wrapper he had been neatly folding. ]

He was your only family? What of your... adoptive family?

[ He asked it carefully, almost neutrally, because what brother would abandon an only sister to a stranger? Hei could not understand it. Her written question, unfortunately, will have to wait. ]

I think they can be covert enough to avoid that...

[She can wait. She knows she's not being ignored, so she's patient no matter how curious she is of his actions, which she's certain are so opposite to her own brother's]

The man who took us in as grandchildren, Teodoro, was the mayor of Yulia City. He's very busy, so I tried to help him with what matters I could... [Light paperwork, cleaning] But no one's going to bring a child along on official duties.

[ Hei held her gaze, fingers suddenly flat against the table top before he spoke quietly, almost silently to avoid attracting the attention of those around them, a hopeful miss by the person sitting between them. ]

And did you have no joy as a child? No playmates?

[ official duties at the age of three, of course there was little Tear could do. Even Hei, loathe as he was to admit it, had known what it was to play, before it all changed. ]

of course~

[Unconsciously, her mouth settles into a firm line, and she doesn't answer right away, biding til lively conversation springs up for cover... and she can decide how to best word this...]

The woman who was... hired [Yes, hired sounds good] to look after me when my grandfather couldn't had two children: a younger girl, and a boy my age. I tried to befriend them so things would go smoothly for her sake. [And Selim tolerated her until they were teens, at least]

But I was happier when I could be at the house, with my garden. That was my... hobby, I guess.

[ tried, there had clearly been issues between the children. Hei was immediately restless, angry on her behalf and for what? There was no point in it. Tear had obviously made her peace despite the careful words. But there was little he could do in this setting.

Not without embarrassing them both. Clenching his hand around his pencil, he nodded. ]

You found peace there.

[ among the living, and yet not. Having something that is wholly dependent on you. He can relate. After a moment, and another shift of attention to the next person in line for the circle, he scribbled an answer on his paper, tapping it once to catch her attention.

Yes, I stayed. ]

[Glancing down, she takes in his response with little more than a ghost of a smile as a visible reaction. Inwardly though, she's extremely pleased with it. Of course, she had guessed what his choice had been, but having him confirm it is just... better]

I could forget about the city and people around me for a time. There, I could feel like I belonged somewhere. [Instead of nowhere, lost orphan with no home to return to] Maybe if Van had found someplace like that soon enough...

[ He would never abandon Pai; he never had. ]

Van wanted different things. [ men of power often did ] There's no sense wondering.

[ even with the power to change the past, not all things happened as one might hope and there was always pain in changing. His memories of Amber, those final moments... He had felt that. ]

...He did.

[A sigh. Hei's right, on both accounts. It's just so easy to fall into the whirlpool of questions that will probably haunt her mind for a long time to come-- especially compared to when she was on Auldrant, where she could push those aside because there was, always, more immediate concerns.

She lightly jabs the tip of her pen against the well traveled paper before jotting down her last note-- "She was very lucky then. And I hope she was able to understand that."-- unless he continues on. Barring that... she settles back in her seat to give her attention again to the session and hopefully get out of here that much quicker]

[ he doesn't and they've already tempted eavesdropping far too much in the semi-lengthy conversation. It was liberating, speaking so freely, but they didn't need to speak of it all in one day.

They had far too many still left to them. Assuming this place allowed them to stay.

But he took her note to heart and etched them into his memory. Had she understood? His fake memories told him so and in this instance, he choose to believe that, perhaps, they were real. It was far kinder then to think she was still lost forever. ]
