[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

It tends to happen when you live forever.

[At least, where he's from.]

It's what we deserve.

[And he...really believes that. They brought it on themselves. Mostly him, though. It's his fault.]

No one deserves that.

[A light shake of her head]

No one...deserves to lose their family.

Well, we killed them ourselves. If that doesn't mean we deserve it, than what does?

[...Yeah, he really shouldn't have drank that coffee.]

Ah--

[She's at a loss for words. Not sure how to respond.] That...

[But why...? A killer isn't exactly the type of person Stefan has struck her as.]

It wasn't on purpose, at least not what I did. My father attacked me, and I defended myself. He thought I was a monster, and he was right. I completed my transition because of his blood.

[He's only talked about this with...a couple of choice people. He hates this day more and more with every moment.]

Damon...wasn't thinking clearly when he killed our last ancestor, or at least that last one I know of.

Stefan...

[In the end, how painful must that have been? To have turned, lost control, and killed even his own family? Somehow it rings so close to what a Level E vampire is. But the person before her now...is nothing like that.

Hand reaching out, it rests gently upon his upper arm.]

You're not a monster, Stefan.

[Her smile is sad and sympathetic. What happened can't be undone. But he can move on from it.]

What happened to you shouldn't have happened. You're amazing. Even though... you were once human and turned, look at you now?

[However old he is]

You're in control, and you even helped to save my life when we were stuck in the temporary dome. You're a good person. Thank you.

Most of the time. It's a daily fight, staying in control. For some reasons it's harder for me than most others.

[It's not an excuse, it's just true.

Still, her words mean something, because she's right. He did try to help her, but he hadn't thought of it as something special. It's what he should have done in the first place.

So he manages a smile, even as he glances briefly at the floor, then back at her.]

I was happy to help, but you're welcome.

Mm. [It's good to see him smile. It brightens this ridiculous session up a little bit.

The smile falters a bit, before she reaches toward the slip of paper he drew before.]

Guess it's my turn, huh?

[It's not a subject she likes all that much either.]

My family is dead too. Mother and father were murdered by my uncle. Generally the pureblood are immortal, but there still are a couple of ways to kill us...

[A sigh] My real brother was murdered, too, by uncle the day of his birth. As for Kaname, he's still around, but I wonder how to really describe him. We're the last of our bloodline, too.

[He nods, a quiet gesture telling her to go ahead.

Still, the story she tells him isn't a happy one, but he's not surprised. Few vampires seem to have anything like a happy ending.]

Death seems to follow our kind around, doesn't it.

[Well... particularly in the case of the vampires from his own world. After all, they have to die. But she doesn't bring that up right now.]

It shouldn't have to be that way.

We survive on the life blood of others, and we live forever when other things have a limited life span. It's a little too optimistic to expect anything else, even without the violence.
