[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

[ It's strange to Helix that he was forced to come to this 'family issues' group. Family. What a joke. He doesn't have a family to have issues with.

And maybe that was the key here.

He wasn't that close to his sister and the man that raised him he'd never call his father. Still, here he was, dealing with the fact that he never got to know his parents or really his only living blood relative. He never speaks of it, tries to pass it off as nothing, but inside it's been gradually growing and gnawing at him. Hearing about Aidan's great family life, the community, seeing those photos projected on the wall and knowing damn well there won't be one of him and his. It never bothered him before cause he didn't know anyone that talked about their brothers, or sisters, or family.

Now? Being surrounded by people who could miss all that? It was putting things into perspective for him and the issue he had with never having that. What if things had been different?

Despite never calling Jethro his father, that didn't change the fact that in a way, that is what Jethro was. Or at least, the closest thing he'd been given. Jethro took him as a babe, saved him from being destroyed but turned him into this monster. He was abused by the man that raised him and called him son. Not that he meant anything by the word of course, it was mostly to get under his skin and show possession in a twisted form.

Helix had consumed enough coffee that sooner or later his utter desire to not be here or not talk about this shit was waning. He didn't know what he was supposed to say about any of this shit but... eventually he picked up a random card to read the question.

What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?

[Wow, what a can of worms. He snorts softly at that.]

Man, where do I even start with this?

[There's a sympathetic glance toward his direction. She's not sitting far off, and although she doesn't really appreciate the class any more than he does, she, too, has found herself falling into the open mood of the group.]

None of it is easy, huh.

Depends. The stuff I've done? No big deal. [He can talk about things like that, but it didn't really count as something he "couldn't move beyond" if he could talk about it so easily.]

It's safe to say the things that were done to me by... my guardian, are things still a part of me. That asshole isn't really my family, least that's not how I see him. But I guess technically he's my father. I'd never call him that anyway.

[She can't imagine. A parent is supposed to love, support, and take care of you. Not hurt. She knows, due to her uncle and his treatment toward her, and even how he used his own son... not all parents provide the love they are meant to toward their children.]

I'm sorry...

[Truly]

Blood... doesn't necessarily make family. Even a parent.

He's not blood. He took me, saved my life really. I was just a baby, so he raised me for his own, but I'm not his son. I'm just a tool.

Why is that?

Why? [There's a dry, humorless chuckle.]

Well gee, cause he forced me to survive on the streets of a huge city by pick-pocketing and lying, or using people. Then he taught me how to crack security and rob places at blaster point. Then he beat me bloody till I learned to fight back and threw me into a ring to earn money or die trying. Did I mention I'm also his personal hitman? Hell, part of my charge in here is murder, I even have a fucking serial killer handle.

I wasn't alone, there were a handful of others but I was the only one of his pets to survive all this shit.

At the beginning, if you want. [Asami tries to offer a sympathetic smile. She doesn't know Helix, but she figures everyone in this group -- and honestly, the whole prison -- could use a sympathetic ear.]

That's what we're all here for, right?

[A glance to Asami before his eyes drop to his shoes and he contemplates where that should even start. What was the beginning of all the bullshit?]

The beginning huh? It's going to be a long fucking horrible story if I start there.

[And oddly enough he's okay with that. He doesn't feel any need to protest telling his life story to complete strangers.]

That's alright.

We're supposed to be here to listen, right? So I'll listen.

[He's honestly pretty surprised, a complete stranger is asking to hear his story. His whole story.]

What's your name?

[Stalling. But not for long.]
