[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

[ utterly dissatisfied with this event already is piter, scowling slightly at he looks down his nose at the question he's drawn. none of them evoke any particular emotions in him— other than vague irritation and offense that he's been placed in such a group when he's never felt himself to be plagued by such "issues." and to prove that, he chooses to answer one of these most inane questions. with a derisive, grimacing twist of the lips and a delicate flourish of the wrist, he shows a card— what is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father? ]

I witnessed my mother's demise. I was five years old when she fell from the third balcony of our home into the courtyard where I was playing. [ subtly, a thoughtful, almost nostalgic tone enters his voice, though there is no hint of melancholy to it. it's quite clear that he isn't at all upset by this memory. ] I recall that I thought she looked like an odd green sack as she fell. [ a faint, almost fond smile graces his lips, and yet again his speech is utterly matter-of-fact. ] She was wearing green, you see.

[ he raises his eyebrows in a sort of challenge. will that be "strong" enough? he believes so, believes that he need not mention the palace or the many concubines other than his mother; those vague details, preserved only clumsily by the mind of a tiny child, are what he keeps to himself. ]

[Jessica listens a little, frowning. Really, she doesn't think highly of her own mother. Never respected her for the way she just stood aside and acted like nothing happened while daddy got out his belt but still.

It's a little jarring to hear someone talk about their own mother that way.
]

That's the most you recall about it?

Oh, it meant little to me at the time. [ he lifts his shoulders in a dainty, casual shrug. ] Such events must be taken in stride, accepted and analyzed— but it was not until many years later that I had the opportunity to reflect upon the event and draw significance from the woman's death.

So when it happened -- you didn't even care? Even though it was your own mother?

Wish my... whatever the fuck you want to call him [Cause he sure as hell isn't going to call him his father.] Would have fallen from a 3rd story balcony.

[Idly.]

[ piter's lips curve into a smile that is all at once mocking and sincere. ] Then perhaps you should have pushed him.

Oh trust me if it were that easy I would have. And I've tried to find different ways to kill that man, he's just always one step ahead somehow.

[And now he's learning chess so maybe it'll help teach him to think a few moves ahead.]
