[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

How many close family members have you lost?

[There's something so ancient and horrible in Saetan's yellow eyes at the question written on the small slip of paper. He's far too terrible calm about answering.]

I don't loose those who die, if that's what this question is supposed to mean.

[Klara hasn't been talking, but she maybe...has been eating. The pastries on the table are good and she avoided anything with chocolate or fruit. The cream cheese danishes and sugar tarts are. And she's relaxed, somehow. She doesn't feel as tense or as awkward about being there.

She shifts her attention to the man who spoke, he's not sitting too far away from her.]

People don't have to die for you to lose them.

[His anger at seeing someone so young trapped in this place will be saved for another occasion. Instead Saetan just smiles gently, still sadly.]

I suppose the lost living one is just harder for me to talk about.

[She understands that.] That's because if they're alive, they might have chosen to do it. If they die, at least it's not their fault. Most of the time.

You're very perceptive, my dear. [A pause, because despite feeling unusually truthful and willing to share, he doesn't want to try to explain all the details of what happened to Daemon to someone so young.] The one I'm thinking of is my son. His mind was shattered, and he doesn't know or trust me enough any more to let me help him. Its been a long time, and I don't know where he is, or if he's alright or capable of taking care of himself or if I'll ever see him again.

[She hadn't meant to say that out loud, but then she had. Maybe it's not such a bad thing, since he doesn't seem upset with her.]

My grandfather was like that after his stroke. The brain damage was bad enough he couldn't remember us very well or move on his own much.

Its something similar to that. It was magic that destroyed his mind, but I don't think he remembers what happened clearly. He blames me for it, I think. [A pause, then,] I'm sorry about your grandfather, darling.

You don't need to be sorry. It was years ago. I don't even remember what he looked like. [The fact he died when she was eight only made it worse.]

But why would your son blame you? Wouldn't he know you didn't do it?

[That seems like an odd thing for someone so young to say, and he can't help but ask,] How old are you, my dear?

It's complicated, but I was inside his mind when he shattered it. There was somewhere I couldn't go, and someone we needed to save. He didn't have the skill for it, and he let me in so I could help. He made some mistakes, and it backfired. I think he remembers I was there, at least in some sense.

Hell? That's a place from a religion isn't it? [Christianity existed in her world, but it didn't claim the same foothold it had in other realities though. The term hell was familiar the way Santa was and as far as she knew they might have equal weight and relevance.]

So people here tell me. Its a very real place, although most people here seem to think of it as something out of a story. In my world its a home to the demon-dead, and while its not the most hospitable of places its hardly as horrible as it seems to be in other worlds.

[She nods, taking that in. She knows a lot about the differences that can form between worlds in this place.] Are you a demon then? [Another question occurs to her and her eyes soften.] Are you dead?

I'm a Guardian. We walk the line between living and dead. Until very recently I chose to spend most of my time with the dead, though. Generally I try not to involve myself in the affairs of the living.

I don't mind answering questions at all, my dear, as long as I get to know you a bit better in return. [He shakes it with a smile.] Saetan SaDiablo, its nice to meet you. And to answer your question its for my daughter's sake. She's around your age, and most of her friends are living.

Guess there's that.

[A shrug.]

In my case, technically I haven't lost anyone I was close to. More like, didn't have the chance. My parents died shortly after I was born, along with our entire race.

It's fine. I was too young to remember or know anyone so it's... not as bad as it sounds, really.

[It should bother him more, but it doesn't.]

As far as I know it's just me and my sister. [He is fortunate, he won't argue that. Though the reason he survived wasn't as kinda nd great as it it might sound. Jethro took him for his own personal gain. He only survived cause the man was selfish and cruel and wanted a prized pet to make him money or a name.]

[A pause for thought, trying to redirect it so the guy can talk about himself for once.]

So, being the lord of hell... you don't really lose anyone per se? I mean are the people close to you immortal to?

You're lucky to have each other. Did your sister have a similar upbringing to you? [He's not prying, per say. He just never could pass up an opportunity to listen to other people's problems.]

[Gently.]
No, they're not immortal. They're dead. I have many close friends who made it to Hell, as well as one of my sons. I had two others who never did. But death is a hard enough transition to help anyone make, I'm afraid. It's doubly hard when its someone I care about.

Nah, she got away, we lived completely separate lives and I didn't even know she existed. We found each other eventually... [So she didn't live in through the treacherous life that he did.]

I see... but they're with you now right? For an eternity or whatever? I mean, sure, they're dead but it could be worse right?

How fortunate to have been able to find each other. I know how difficult that can be.

Yes, it could be and I'm very grateful not to have lost them forever, but it can still be hard. My son Mephis died an old man, and some days that can be hard. I look younger than he does, you know. I had a falling out with another son, Peyton, that I wish very desperately had never happened. In any case I think he chose to fade away to darkness immediately, rather than face me. I don't know when he died, but it would have been a very long time ago. And my best friend who is like a brother to me died in battle. He never even noticed he was demon-dead until it was all over and he saw me waiting for him. But you keep the wounds you die with, and that's its own unpleasant reminder. [A faint, wistful smile.] I must sound like a very bitter old man with too many stories to you, boyo. Forgive me.
