[Day 237] Self-Esteem Group Therapy Mingle
[Should you be lucky enough to get enrolled into this group, you will be led to the beach—specifically, one of the beach huts in a low-traffic area, which has been primed with an assortment of chairs organized in a circle around a table. All the delicious and comforting snacks and beverages you could want await you in the back of the hut.]

[It's a very relaxing setup: an ocean-side view, the soothing sound of waves washing along the shore, and the salty sea air permeating everything. Just ignore the bots hovering the perimeter a few yards beyond the hut. They won't bother you unless you try to escape.]

[On the central table are a series of activity suggestions:]

• Each person will take a turn around the circle saying their name and offering one positive quality or talent they genuinely like about themselves. Others are welcome to speak up if they share that trait. Make a friend!

• In groups or pairs, the participants will come up with three words that they would use to describe their ideal self, no matter how impossible it may feel to be that way. They must then phrase these into an "I am" statement, and the other(s) present will affirm them.

• The group takes turns focusing on one person. This person will become the target of a barrage of kindness: genuine compliments, hugs, high-fives, or other caring and affirming gestures are go! The recipient of these is encouraged to take their time digesting everything before the group moves on to the next person.

• Participants tell a story about a time when they felt as though they accomplished something that they are incredibly proud of. Big or small!

[... But feel free to come up with more!]

Well... okay yeah they do... mostly around Halloween time. But I was talking about boys looking good and buff and sporty while playing baseball.

Oh! I um, I guess that happens too.

[Not that he's noticed!

...

He has totally noticed.]

You should come to one of our games or be on one of our teams! It's more fun to play than watch.

[ That makes her laugh, a silly snickering sound as she shakes her head. ]

Okay so athleticism is not a talent of mine. I trip over everything and nothing. All the clumsiness. No one would pick me for their team, trust me.

I would pick you. [Such a sweet smile. He means this. It isn't even a hitting on her thing. He wouldn't know where to start to actually intentionally hit on someone.]

[ For a moment she's surprised. In school she had always been one of the last people picked for a team because of her clumsiness and because she was that girl with the weird family issues. ]

Oh. Well. [ Wow. Sweet. She wasn't that girl with the weird family issues here. ] I don't even know how to respond except with thank you.

You could say you'll join, but um, only if you want to. [He wants everyone to join, but he doesn't want them to be uncomfortable.] You can think about it?

I'll think about it.

[ Thank goodness for that option. She could just see herself joining and then loosing the game for everyone because of her lack of sportiness. Talk about a quick way to lose friends. ]

I tried out for the cheer leading team once. And... fell. And that didn't work out, obviously. Cause of falling. [ A pause. ] Also, the popular girls on the squad didn't like me. I mean I wasn't... cool.

[His eyes open wider.] The cheerleading team here? Someone was mean to you?

Oh, no! No. Back home. I didn't even try for the one here. Cause... bad experiences.
