Class 005 : Day 234 : Demons : Crossroads Deals
[Sam Winchester is a tall man under any circumstances, but he might seem just a little extra tall while he's standing for the lecture and everyone else is seated. It's probably less imposing since he is wearing plaid though. It's hard to be imposing in plaid.]

Overview : Demons

Demons are humans who've had their humanity stripped away from their time in hell under prolonged and extensive torture. [There is something heavy in his tone. After all, his brother has been through that torture and Sam is set to put himself through the same when he gets back.] When demons appear outside of hell they are usually in the form of black smoke unless they have possessed a human body. When they take possession they look just like that person and have access to all their memories. A body with a demon inside can take a lot of physical punishment, but only as long as the demon is still with them. Once they possess a new body the former one suffers from every bit of damage that might have been inflicted if they're even still alive. If they do live through a possession they'll remember everything that happened. While possessed sometimes the person's eyes will change color, revealing the demon inside.

There are several different types of demons. Today, we're going to talk about Crossroads Demons and their deals. Unlike other demons, they have red eyes. They're also the ones who make deals for your soul. They're named crossroads demons because you can summon them at a place where roads cross. [But, no, he is not going to go over exactly how to summon them.]

[ DEMONS ]

Topic : Crossroads Demons/Deals

Once summoned they can make set up contracts with humans. Maybe wealth or fame or improved health. They can do a lot and it comes true. The only draw back is that when the time is up they get your soul which means death and a one-way trip to hell. The deals are something you have to agree to and seal with a kiss. After that, it's just a matter of waiting. There aren't a lot of ways to get out of them. You might be able to renegotiate, but the house always wins. [You know, unless you're a Winchester.]

[ CROSSROADS ]

Practical : Defense of Hell hounds

When time is up the hell hounds come for you to enforce the price. They're vicious, powerful demonic dogs, who are invisible until you're close to death. Once they're after you, they don't give up until they kill you and drag your soul back to hell. You can delay them with protection barriers of salt or goofer dust. Killing them is not easy especially if you can't see them. Salt and iron are both effective. If you've got something that can kill a demon it should have some effect on the hellhounds.

[ HELLHOUNDS ]

Case Study : Evan Hudson

We met up with a man once named Evan Hudson who didn't do his own summoning. Someone else had opened the door and he walked through it to save his wife from cancer. His time was up and the hellhounds were close. We were able to summon the crossroads demon who made the deal with him. We caught her in a Devil's Trap which is a lesson for another day, but basically, when a demon is inside a particular symbol, they can't leave it.

[He's just going to skip over a lot of details about his father that this case brings up for him. No need to go into any of that.]

Then while I evaded hellhounds with Evan Dean started exorcising the demon. That means taking the demon out of the human host and sending it back to hell. She didn't want that, so she agreed to release his soul. It worked out for him, but that isn't usually the way.

The best way to keep yourself from the wrong end of a crossroads deal is to never make one.

[ EVAN HUDSON ]

Questions & Discussion

Okay, so, has anyone had this happen in their world? Any questions about it? And, if you want, you can talk about what sort of thing might tempt you to make a deal. Just be really careful you don't kiss anyone afterward.

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail, but feel free to bring more into it. He will have additional demon lectures though, so he wouldn't have gone into detail or given multiple case studies. Backdated to class time.)

That's a relief. I mean, I know there are probably more important life choices to examine if you go around smooching demons but it's still like asking for a mono epidemic.

Wait, you actually know demons? Plural?

Personally, I'm betting it's a ploy to get some lip action on their part. It seems kinda ridic that they can't do their mojo with or without a kiss.

[ It's kind of a joke because hello, she's seen lots of ridiculous things. Sealed with a kiss isn't too far a stretch. ]

Yeah, not all of them are evil. Some just wanna live peacefully and will help out if you need it where they can.

That's... kind of neat. It's a shame that demons have been getting such a bad rep, especially if not all of them deserved it at all.

[ It makes her think of Oscar Vibenius. Actually, it makes her think about a lot of people. Reputation can be so deceiving. ]

[ She can't help but nod emphatically. It's a side note that she always comes away with from Sam's classes. Not all demons deserve to die, no questions asked. ]

There was this one demon I knew, his name was Clem. And I haven't seen him in a long time but he kind of helped me hide away when some people were after me. And Spike, he... well he took care of me a lot. [ But that's complicated now. ] Honestly, I'd probably be dead if it weren't for them, especially Spike. Well... not probably. I would be.

Spike and Clem. Those are very demon-y names. Or biker-y I guess, which would make sense with the general biker image. [ A beat. ]

Actually, from what you've told me they seem kind of similar, don't they? All grr and aargh and tough on the outside but some of them are teddybears on the inside.

It's true. They seem all scary but really... most demons have feelings and emotions, friends and families and things to do just like the rest of us. Some of them are evil, some of them are good.

[ She offers Chuck a small smile. ] But humans are like that too, right?

Yeah... they are. I guess you never really know someone, huh? Just what they show you or... or what you think you're seeing, I guess.

[ A little contemplative, but she snaps out of it soon enough with a subject side-step. ] It's a good class though. Interesting.

Super interesting. And Sam's a really good teacher. He usually takes all the questions and is really good at letting the conversation go where it might, even veering off topic if it goes there. I like teachers who do that cause you never know when you might learn something if just from chatting up a topic and all it's sub-topics.

[ She really loves learning, okay? ] You remember those tree flow charts you used to have to make in school? He lets conversations work like that... usually. It's cool. The criminology class is like that too. Have you tried it?

Tree flow charts? I never got to do those! Well, I know what they are but, uhm. I was home schooled. [ She shakes her head. ] I didn't even know we had a criminology class. I've only been here a couple of days, so I guess that's not too strange.

So what do you talk about? Murder most foul, whodunnit, stuff like that?

Oh! Well I'm Dawn Summers. And I haven't met a lot of people here yet so... welcome? Welcome doesn't sound right but there it is.

[ Yes, welcome to prison is such an appropriate response. ] Yeah, the teacher, Professor Reid, he talks about all the different kinds of criminals and the psychology behind them. It's super interesting. Like... in a sick morbid kind of way. But sometimes I like sick and morbid... which isn't weird. I mean, not in a weird way. It's just interesting.

Kitty Pimms. Thank you for the warm welcome — it almost makes you forget the ever-after part. [ She smiles easily! There's also some nodding at that explanation. ]

I could get into that. Actually, back home I usually help a Private Investigator with murder cases so it's kind of my field already. Less with the head stuff though.

Nice to meet you too, Kitty. I like meeting new people. There are other Kitty's here. I mean... another one. Have you met her? She runs the Defense Force. [ And she might be evil. Dawn hasn't decided on whether she is or not. ] Which might totally fit into the whole helping a PI thing back home. The Defense Force, I mean. Have you heard of it?

[ Dawn shrugs a bit. She's still super confused about the Defense Force too, so maybe she isn't the best person to talk about it. But if Kitty has a background in law enforcement work, even just advising, she'll probably get it. ] I'm not really sure what they do. But they patrol and stuff, investigate the prison. The bots usually keep everything under a tight reign though so I'm not sure that there's any actual... police type work. But you know... inmate run, so there's that.

[ "A background in law enforcement" is definitely an exaggeration. Tagging along and poking her nose where it doesn't belong despite Emerson's protests would be a lot more accurate... still, this sounds like something she should get a closer look at. ]

Investigating the prison sounds pretty interesting. It sure sounds like no one really knows what's going on here.

[ She leans in conspiratorially. ] Personally, I think it's a pocket dimension that collects from all other universes and dimensions and realities. But since it's bot run, I feel like it also has to be some kind of super awesomely advanced technology holding it all together.

His name is Ianto Jones. I just met him the other day, but he seemed to know a thing or two about fighting evil robots.

And make coffee.

I wonder if he's working with the Defense Force if he's all knowledgeable on the subject. Maybe he could help them help us get back to our homes. Did he say anything about that?

[ Cause she's thinking maybe she should seek out Ianto Jones and introduce him to other Kitty. Or at least point him in her direction since other Kitty is scary. ]

That's a cool feeling, right? When your brain has to expand to new ideas and possibilities. We deal with supernatural all the time back home. But sometimes there are still surprises that happen and it's like... woah. New thing to learn about.

Cool and a little scary, sometimes... but there's nothing you can do but straighten up and do your best, right? Even when you do feel like you're out on thin ice.
