[Day 232] [Action|Open]
[Klara is in the library, where she spends hours of each day. She loves to read and the more educational books provide a lot of information she had not been able to receive back home. Like medical books. Today she's having trouble with the fact many of the books she's looking for are on the top shelves or near enough to them. She's not very tall, even for her "age," and the stepstool she found wasn't still left her two shelves short of her target. She stood on her tiptoes and took a look around, trying to see if anyone else was around. When she thinks the coast is clear, she jumps up, using a bit of extra force to get herself up to the book she wanted, only the force used put too much pressure on the books, shoving many of them through the shelves and off into the aisle on the other side.

After the mess she tried to clean up in the library, Klara decided maybe it would be better to spend time outside instead. She brought a large box full of odds and ends--bells, wire, wooden carvings of suns and planets, a bag of sea shells, and small thin metal pipes--and sat outside under a tree in Sector 0. It was to the side of one of the food stands which gave her a good view of most of the doors to the other sectors. She could people watch and work on her wind chimes at the same time. If she breathed in too deeply she could smell everyone nearby and it made her tense and wanting, but she kept herself sitting right there the grass. If she was going to try and work through her urges, the only way she could was by making herself be around people and get used to it...right?

Hopefully.]

{OOC: Feel free to almost get hit on the head by books in the library or notice the girl making home made wind chimes in Sector 0. She's a little hungry, but will be trying not to bite anyone who comes by.}

If no one hears a sound, did a tree really fall?

[ he glanced at Klara for confirmation, having heard it in english and translated alike, the quote comes out semi-flat. ]

[He's not that close to her, but he's just close enough that Klara is quiet and breathing carefully for a moment. It was not this hard in the beginning. Is she getting worse, instead of better? Then she realizes she may have been silent too long.]

Yes, that one. It sounds better when you say it that way. [Using the actual words and her not messing it up. She hesitates uncomfortably before walking around to assess the mess in the other aisle. There is at least six books on the ground. Did she shove the entire row off the shelf?]

Um.

Hmm... Although it may not be accurate. Every culture seems to have it's own proverb, for the silence that follows.

[ he's carrying the ladder over with him as he follows after her, not minding the quiet at all. He lived in a society that valued silences and all the empty spaces in between. ]

Would you like help with that?

[ he set the ladder on the ground, careful to make sure it was well grounded before moving over to pick up the books. ]

It won't take any time at all.

[It's really nice of him to offer to help her. It's strange to think that when she was younger having a cute older guy offer to help her would have been a highlight. She would have told her friends at school and they would have laughed about it. Now she just feels awkward.]

Okay. Thank you. [She stoops to pick up books herself.] I can pass them to you. You're taller than I am so you can reach the shelf easier.

[ he moved easily into place, waiting expectantly for Klara to hand over the books ]

It's nothing to give thanks for. I use to do this in school all the time. [ and as an adult, when the job required it. As work went, maintaining a library was one of the more therapeutic things he's done. ]

You were a library assistant? [Only the upperclassmen were allowed to do that at her private school. It makes her perk in interest as she hands the books to him.]

What kind of school did you go to?

Hmm... [ he drew out the hum as he shifted easily from waiting for a book to putting it back on the shelf, careful to line up the spin with the edge for a neat, tidy appearance. ]

Public, mostly. I'm afraid I traveled a great deal.

[ for one reason or another. ]

You weren't allowed to volunteer in your own school?

[He's so neat and efficient about it... He must be used to doing this a lot like he said. Klara holds up a heavy book that looks a bit old.]

Um...I wasn't old enough. You had to come in early or stay late--for cleaning up the library.

[ he glanced over at her and then furrowed his brow before taking the heavy book with a near silent grunt. ]

That was an issue?

[ although the western countries did seem to be more particular about how their kids commuted to school. Perhaps she suffered from that restriction. No matter. Hei could adapt. ]

[She hadn't even noticed how heavy the book was herself. She had just handed it to him.]

I wasn't old enough to drive myself and...my parents liked keeping a schedule. [Hence why she was not allowed.]

...Did you have to ask permission?

[ it's the leverage. You can pull a muscle, lifting books over your head. ]

So long as I stayed out of trouble, my parents took pride in my work.

[ It's such a shame they had their memories erased at such an early age. He may have actually enjoyed visiting them again, if only to share stories of a time before Pai and Hei existed. But he segued smoothly towards something else, wiping his hands lightly against his jeans before speaking again. ]

If this is work that interests you, the wardens might allow it.

[ after all, there is no reason not to, in this place. ]

[Injuring yourself putting books away on a shelf would be a really embarrassing story to tell. Although Klara feels somewhat...jealous, maybe is the word. Would her mother have been proud of her if she had been allowed to do these things before It happened?]

I...hadn't thought about doing it here. They have robots to do it for them. And the books keep changing. How do you know if you make a mistake?

[ With no more books left to shelve, he pointed to binding ]

The card catalog is updated with each new book and likewise we remove the card if a book is removed from circulation. It's no different then any other library. If you haven't used it before, I could show you.

[ well, sort of. The wardens had their own system, but every system had a pattern. It was easy enough to decipher. ]

[She understood the card system, but whatever system the wardens used made little sense to her. Maybe he understood it better than she did...]

That would be...very helpful, thank you. [She picks up and holds the last book to him.] My name is Klara.

[ he bowed over the book, taking it in two hands rather then the single he had been using. ]

It's Hei, although some may call me Li. [ It's not exactly a lie... ] Shall I show you the system, once you're done with your studies?

[She watches him with some confusion until it hits her that he's Asian and a lot of Asian cultures bow to greet each other. Should she do it too? She hesitates before copying him.] It's nice to meet you, Mr. Hei.

[Maybe Li is a nickname. Hei sounds like what you would say when you're calling out to someone, but she won't say that.]

And...yes. If you don't mind. I won't be studying that much longer, but you don't have to stay if you are busy.

[ he smiled easily, polite to the end. ]

Just Li, if it pleases you. I prefer the name. [ it was easier to pretend he was normal, even if he could never forget that he wasn't. ]

And it's no trouble. We can meet in the front entry, when you're finished.

[ There was always something to do in the library after all. ]
