The [Voice] of Night Vale
[For a moment, there is only silence -- Then there is the slight, soft sound that is someone putting on their head-set for the very first time. A voice is heard.]

-- Hello?

Hello, Night Vale? This is Cecil, speaking to you from within a massive dome one point zero three miles beneath the surface of what I assume has to be an ocean. Which ocean it happens to be, I am unsure. Have I been taken without my knowledge through a rim in the Pacific Ocean, in which a monstrosity that lives above this dome has otherwise taken my place? I doubt whoever that is has an as svelte voice as I!

From where I am within this dome there is a rich, thick garden. Along with this garden there happens to be a door which to the naked eye seems to absolutely not go anywhere. When I walk around it to the other side there is only even more garden! When I attempt to turn the knob I am unable to, as it happens to be locked... It is unable to be unlocked from either side, so there must be a side in another dimension where it can be. As for the garden? It is floating as if by dark magic! From my vantage upon this floating garden, only what must be the most splendid view of this dome can be seen by me. If only you could see it, too, listeners! If only you could see it, too.

As to how I am speaking to you, dear listeners, I have been given possession of a head-set, which fits quite comfortably upon one of my ears -- Oh! It seems that a greeting has been left for me upon it. By those who say they are my new wardens. I have been mostly correct on my assumptions, for I am one point zero three miles beneath the surface of Saylar Ocean within this dome, which seems to now be my prison for the rest of my natural life. This is what Veridical, one of my new wardens, has told me. There is also a list of the crimes that have brought me here and -- They seem to be in nice order, from what I can glimpse.

Oh, happy day, listeners! The purpose of my stay here is for rehabilitation, how kind of them to give a criminal such as I a chance to redeem myself in their eyes! There is so much to do, so much to report upon to you! Though, I am sad to say... That my darling, perfect Carlos is not here to rehabilitate with me. I hope that, wherever he might be right now, that he is safe. That he will not forget me, until I can one day see him again, whether it be here or elsewhere. Until then, I will just have to be 'okay.'

Night Vale, there is no way for me to know if any of this is getting to you at all. For all I know right now, this is a very realistic dream that I will later wake up from, then will completely forget about a few seconds later in the hustle and bustle that is my consciousness coming straight back to me. Until I know for sure,

I have never seen a tombstone that said, "Died because I didn't forward a message to ten people." That's because they keep sending them to me and I've been using their various parts as nourishment. No one has been any the wiser! If anything, they usually ask me for seconds.

Welcome to MarinaNova Asylum.

[Calliope did not entirely follow that. It was straightforward enough at first, even if a bit odd that some pleasantly-voiced man was narrating himself. And then it eventually turned into something akin to one of Roxy's rants, pumped up and put on a heavy course of steroids.]

[That's fine, though. She can address the parts she did fully follow.]

It is a tad strange at first, isn't it? You seem to be taking it well, nonetheless.

It is strange at first, in that it is actually not so strange. It is a lot less strange here than when I had been back in my little desert town. Want to know what is most strange, to me? That there are no screams in the distance, that there doesn't seem to be any hooded figures anywhere! Not even a dog park to not know about and keep away from. Other than the wardens, there is not much of a government anywhere. Not even a vague one that knows how to keep a low profile except everyone still knows they are out there. How does this prison not fall apart at the seams?

I suppose that in the end, no matter how strange it is here to me, there is no point being unprofessional while there are still those out there who will listen.

...

[what]

I suppose we all manage somehow. You could always go to the graveyard, if you truly need a creepy-things fix.

There is a graveyard here? Well, I suppose that without any vast, open desert to bury the dead in they just have to make do with what they can get here. Having the dead all in once place must also help immensely in subduing them when they rise to the surface every Halloween. How thoughtful!

I will have to take a visit there, sometime. There are so many other sights to see, much more creepy ones! I will have to pace myself, there is only so much I can do in one day.

Um... Yes, be certain to pace yourself out. You don't want to run out of creepy sights too quickly. [Especially since there are only, like, three tops.]

[Maybe.]

So, you're...?

What an excellent point! From where I am everything seems as normal as anything could be, ever. I am sure there must be more to experience while actually down there!

[After all, Night Vale basically looks like a normal, small desert town... Until you enter it, that is.]

I am the Voice of Night Vale, [He basically purrs that out, what a lovely tone his voice was] except you can call me Cecil.

I see! It's a pleasure to meet you, Cecil. [She thinks. This whole conversation has left her with a peculiar feeling not unlike sitting sideways on a slanted surface.]

Please call me Callie.

It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Callie. You have been a very lovely presence to talk to!

If only we could meet, as I would shake your hand in gratitude.

[She doubts that.]

"If only"? —oh, right. You're trapped above the kiosk.

I'm sure someone will try to get you down sooner or later!
