The [Voice] of Night Vale
[For a moment, there is only silence -- Then there is the slight, soft sound that is someone putting on their head-set for the very first time. A voice is heard.]

-- Hello?

Hello, Night Vale? This is Cecil, speaking to you from within a massive dome one point zero three miles beneath the surface of what I assume has to be an ocean. Which ocean it happens to be, I am unsure. Have I been taken without my knowledge through a rim in the Pacific Ocean, in which a monstrosity that lives above this dome has otherwise taken my place? I doubt whoever that is has an as svelte voice as I!

From where I am within this dome there is a rich, thick garden. Along with this garden there happens to be a door which to the naked eye seems to absolutely not go anywhere. When I walk around it to the other side there is only even more garden! When I attempt to turn the knob I am unable to, as it happens to be locked... It is unable to be unlocked from either side, so there must be a side in another dimension where it can be. As for the garden? It is floating as if by dark magic! From my vantage upon this floating garden, only what must be the most splendid view of this dome can be seen by me. If only you could see it, too, listeners! If only you could see it, too.

As to how I am speaking to you, dear listeners, I have been given possession of a head-set, which fits quite comfortably upon one of my ears -- Oh! It seems that a greeting has been left for me upon it. By those who say they are my new wardens. I have been mostly correct on my assumptions, for I am one point zero three miles beneath the surface of Saylar Ocean within this dome, which seems to now be my prison for the rest of my natural life. This is what Veridical, one of my new wardens, has told me. There is also a list of the crimes that have brought me here and -- They seem to be in nice order, from what I can glimpse.

Oh, happy day, listeners! The purpose of my stay here is for rehabilitation, how kind of them to give a criminal such as I a chance to redeem myself in their eyes! There is so much to do, so much to report upon to you! Though, I am sad to say... That my darling, perfect Carlos is not here to rehabilitate with me. I hope that, wherever he might be right now, that he is safe. That he will not forget me, until I can one day see him again, whether it be here or elsewhere. Until then, I will just have to be 'okay.'

Night Vale, there is no way for me to know if any of this is getting to you at all. For all I know right now, this is a very realistic dream that I will later wake up from, then will completely forget about a few seconds later in the hustle and bustle that is my consciousness coming straight back to me. Until I know for sure,

I have never seen a tombstone that said, "Died because I didn't forward a message to ten people." That's because they keep sending them to me and I've been using their various parts as nourishment. No one has been any the wiser! If anything, they usually ask me for seconds.

Welcome to MarinaNova Asylum.

Ever heard of "short and sweet?" You should try it sometime.

There are times when I have gone on, longer even than I should as a radio host, in which management would begin its squalling from the other side of its door until I cease my words as they see fit. However, as long as there is possibly a listener it is much better to keep them well informed with as many details as I am legally allowed to give, is it not? If I might be allowed to say, without putting down your criticism too hard, what I have said already has actually been quite short and sweet, considering that my shows tend to be a little over twenty minutes long if not close to a half hour long like it has in some cases.

Goodnight, MarinaNova. Goodnight.

[Someone inside the Pet Cafe apparently did not get the memo as to where exactly he was...transported? Abducted? How did he get here actually? Where was here? Yes, Night Vale had an adorable vermin problem, sure, but no place in town looked like this one. Unless this was an alternate reality? It wouldn't have been the first time. Where was his clipboard?

And then there is a voice. Oh, that voice... that wonderful, familiar voice... Cecil's voice. It sounds so far away. But that's probably because his headset is being sat on by a puppy.

He gently moves the puppy and puts on his headset. Cecil says that they're in prison?! Under the ocean?!? As he is currently covered with adorable kittens, it takes Carlos a few, fumbling moments to get the headset working.]

Cecil! Cecil, are you there? Can you hear and see me? There are puppies and kittens all over but this doesn't seem to be anywhere in Night Vale, Cecil. I don't know how we got here. I need to run some tests on this place and maybe I'll be able to figure out away to get us back.

[There's a sharp intake of what must be his breath (one would hope), then he lets it all out with the most gleeful of noises! A noise which happens to be lovingly rolled up into a ball so that it can simply be thrown towards one name only:]

Carlos! Most wonderful and smart, Carlos!

[ -- That's it, that's all he's able to say at the moment. He's gushing way too hard to be able to say anything else. Let alone how happy he is that Carlos was there to rehabilitate with him and to possibly science them out.]

[If Cecil is paying attention, he'll notice the faintest darkening of those already dark (and beautiful) cheeks. He softly, awkwardly clears his throat and runs a hand through his (perfect) hair.]

Hi Cecil.

[But his voice is warm (and oaky). After a pause, he smiles, touching the headset gently. Affectionately.]

I'm really glad to hear your voice...because at first I thought some sort of rift between dimensions must have opened in the several feet separating my lab and Big Rico's, since that's where I was headed before I ended up here. But seeing as you're here too, that's obviously not the explanation. Unless a rift opened simultaneously in your studio? But then they said this was a prison...

Cecil, did you forget to submit the report on our date?!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[Cecil was basically paying the utmost attention to every detail of Carlos he could see on the tiny screen in front of his eye. The faintest blush upon those dark cheeks, the way Carlos' throat moves as he clears his throat and then the way he runs a hand through his perfect, oh so perfect hair! At hearing his name from those lips, lips that have been against his own lips, Cecil lets out the softest of pleased noises from those lips! Even at the touch of the head-set, to Cecil, it felt like he was the one being touched by Carlos instead.]

This is a prison, yes. A prison that we can not escape from for our own 'rehabilitation.'

While I have not been able to figure out how exactly we got here... Especially, this deep under an ocean from which I can only assume is from another universe entirely... I can assure you, my most perfect Carlos, that my report on our date had gone through to the correct authorities and is not the reason we are here. I have already gone over the list they have given me and it is not there as a reason for my permanent rehabilitation.

You are correct in your, of course, very legal thoughts. I am very far away from my little desert town.

However, as long as there happens to be an audience, my voice will be heard by those who would be so willing to listen.

Considering the circumstances, I'm not sure I'm confident of the legality of my thoughts, as I'm not clear whose laws we're to be judged by.

Evidently there's a reasonably complex communications system in place, wherever this might be, so I expect you aren't short of listeners. What sort of information do you broadcast, if you don't mind my asking?

As we are not within Night Vale's boundaries or anywhere near those boundaries from what I can surmise, I am also not as confident of the legality of our thoughts. As I can not see any shadowy figures from my vantage point, I have to assume there are none to not look at.

I broadcast basically any information that is worthwhile. Local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events as only a few examples. While I am here, I will possibly set up a way for me to collect information to report upon on my broadcasts.

That is not too surprising to me, as disappointing not being familiar with Night Vale may be! Not many know that Night Vale even exists. It is not on any map, you see. No matter how many times you might check the atlas, unless you check at the exact moment an angel that does not even exist spreads its wings and a shooting star falls through the void, shattering it from existence. Only then will Night Vale clearly be upon the atlas you happen to be looking at about twenty days later when you will otherwise have long forgotten about checking an atlas.

[Calliope did not entirely follow that. It was straightforward enough at first, even if a bit odd that some pleasantly-voiced man was narrating himself. And then it eventually turned into something akin to one of Roxy's rants, pumped up and put on a heavy course of steroids.]

[That's fine, though. She can address the parts she did fully follow.]

It is a tad strange at first, isn't it? You seem to be taking it well, nonetheless.

It is strange at first, in that it is actually not so strange. It is a lot less strange here than when I had been back in my little desert town. Want to know what is most strange, to me? That there are no screams in the distance, that there doesn't seem to be any hooded figures anywhere! Not even a dog park to not know about and keep away from. Other than the wardens, there is not much of a government anywhere. Not even a vague one that knows how to keep a low profile except everyone still knows they are out there. How does this prison not fall apart at the seams?

I suppose that in the end, no matter how strange it is here to me, there is no point being unprofessional while there are still those out there who will listen.

I suppose we all manage somehow. You could always go to the graveyard, if you truly need a creepy-things fix.

[info]abovethearbys

There is a graveyard here? Well, I suppose that without any vast, open desert to bury the dead in they just have to make do with what they can get here. Having the dead all in once place must also help immensely in subduing them when they rise to the surface every Halloween. How thoughtful!

I will have to take a visit there, sometime. There are so many other sights to see, much more creepy ones! I will have to pace myself, there is only so much I can do in one day.

[info]ophiuchus

Um... Yes, be certain to pace yourself out. You don't want to run out of creepy sights too quickly. [Especially since there are only, like, three tops.]

[Maybe.]

[After all, Night Vale basically looks like a normal, small desert town... Until you enter it, that is.]

As a radio host for a small desert town such as Night Vale, as long as there could possibly be a listener it is much better to keep them well informed with as many details as I am legally allowed to give than to keep them in the dark.

... As I had only moments before been in the middle of one of my usual shows, I could only assume I had an audience at the time of my arrival. From the various replies I have gotten, I can only say now that my assumption had been correct.

That seems to be the case, as I am immensely far away from my planet, let alone my place of work and home. I am also rather far away from the ground, as I am still upon this floating garden.
