[video | open] Defense Force... announcement thing.
Good day, Marina-- or, I suppose, Marina Nova. I hope everyone is adjusting as well as can be expected. We've suffered some tremendous losses [herself very much included,] but I am certain we will be able to manage things as well as possible.

With regards to the Defense Force -- with Suzaku Kururugi among those lost, and the Wardens confirming for me that weapons and life sign monitoring are no longer available -- I would like to make a proposal. [and she's going to make it openly, so anyone can weigh in... trolls she can handle, and it's worth the risk to give everyone a chance to speak.]

Although I believed strongly in Suzaku and what he did with the Force, there was something troubling me. In some cases, members' primary motivation for joining was to obtain a weapon. And while I know for a fact that Suzaku would not admit anyone who was not suitable, it nonetheless seems as though such a team should have members whose primary reason for joining is belief in its purpose. And further, I believe that the invasion of privacy that the former Defense Force utilized for monitoring life signs made inmates uneasy. I know I had my own questions about such methodology, but it was not my team and thus not my place to debate what was in place.

However, now that many things have begun anew, I am wondering if there are those among us who believe strongly enough in protecting others that they would agree to do so without the promise of a weapon, or any such personal gain. A new leader would need to be elected, and I would be happy to oversee the process if the potential members would like. Any and all proposals will be considered.

With regards to weaponry and special abilities for those who would use them in defense of themselves or others, that is a battle that I will continue to fight with the Wardens, regardless of whether there is a formal Defense Force. I believe in our members, and all of you will have my full support regardless of the status of the organization as a whole.

I would assume that an organization that has been through so much for so long would be able to function even in the absence of an appointed leader. At least long enough for us to get our bearings again. [And if you believe in the members so much, you wouldn't need to officially enforce this, would you?]

Reforming the very nature of that organization this early seems like it could do more harm than good, if you ask me.

[Since she did actually ask him -- well, everyone, she only nods.] I understand your opinion, Doctor.

...Alright. Good. [He's not sure if he's actually picking up on something here, or if his judgment is tainted.]

[letting that hang for a beat, then]

I suppose you have a recommendation as to when might be ideal to begin the process? [Not that she's changing her mind.]

No, I don't. I have no experience in positions of leadership.

All I'm suggesting is that maybe it would be a good idea to hold off on the elections until we're not fresh off the boat. In fact, I would go as far as to say that publicly announcing the current weakened state of the Defense Force may not have been the best course of action, especially without giving the current members advance notice.

Weakened would hardly describe our current status, given all of the responses that have been received. So long as so many are willing to ally in the spirit of protection, we will never be weakened. [As she said, she believes in their members.]

While it is true that the members would have acted to protect others regardless of any announcement, I believe that the perceived secrecy surrounding the Defense Force in the former dome led to discontent among the other inmates. I find that any organization that does not operate openly is one that people mistrust. It was unintentional, and necessary for many reasons, but given the state of things at present I see no need why it would not be beneficial to let the dome at large know that we have not, and will not, give up our mission.

I do have experience leading, Doctor Reid. And while I hear the validity of your points, I have given due thought to my actions.

So you're saying that publicly announcing that we're without powers, weapons, an appointed leader and that we're no longer a sanctioned organization isn't putting the members in a vulnerable position? Some of us relied on those weapons in order to defend ourselves, and you've just publicly exposed us as powerless to the very individuals that had a grudge against us in the first place!

I'm not questioning your motives, Miss Clyne, I'm questioning your timing and even more so your dedication to your team mates. If you have the leadership experience you say you have, I'm sure you understand the value of protecting your own and informing them of any major changes you're planning that directly affect their safety.

But if you've given thought to your actions, then there's nothing left for me but to wish you good luck.

[In contrast to his tone, she remains entirely calm and even friendly.]

The information about weapons and powers I obtained via public channels; otherwise, as the bearer of no weapon or powers myself, I would be unaware. The only thing that I have announced here that was not previously announced was the lack of sanction from our new Wardens, and as I've said, I should think that would only help our cause in getting the inmates at large to believe that we mean well, and are on their side and not the Wardens'.

And our safety, fortunately, will be protected by those, former members of the Defense Force or not, who answered my call. In that, nothing has changed. Nothing will change until the members decide such. All I have offered are my thoughts, and a request for all those interested to make their voice heard.

[He makes a start to say something else, but stops himself. There's no point, because she's been missing it so far. Maybe she got the information through a public channel, but that doesn't mean that the members don't deserve advance warning. It seems like such an obvious thing to him.

Hotch would never pull something like this. He lied to them in order to protect them, but he would never put the safety of the team at risk just to follow some ideal that's suddenly allowed to come out in the open because the leader position is vacant. Perhaps she's well-meaning, perhaps she really is this naive —— but whatever it is, the tentative trust he had in her through being members of the Defense Force is gone.

In fact, he's pretty sure this tipped the scales about the whole damn thing. ]

Alright. Fine. I guess we're done here then. [He needs to cool the hell off before he says something he'll really regret. Don't burn all your bridges, Reid.]

Mm, all right. I hope you settle in well, Doctor Reid.
