All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.

Edgar Allen Poe

[The man's tone is thoughtful, the words clearly intended for himself more than anyone else.]

And what a dream.

[ action ]
[An older man sits at a small corner table in the Winery, sipping a glass of red wine and reading Crime & Punishment. The situation is too strange for him to be concerned; it has to be some kind of dream. So why worry?]

[ she's warmed by the quote, even if that was perhaps not his intent. Even over the device, he just had that kind of voice. ]

You know your literature. Are you a scholar perhaps?

[ although the quote strikes a chord within her. It was not but a few days ago that Reid and Tear a like had proposed their dream theories. And if this was a dream, did she wish to wake from it? ]

[a soft laugh]

I am but a humble student of human nature. It lends itself to an appreciation of literature.

It does you credit.

[ she's smiling as she speaks, and she means the compliment. ]

I am [ agent ] Peggy Carter. Perhaps we could discuss your appreciation of literature over tea? It's been a while since I've had such a pleasure.

[ although she is working to correct that, never fear. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Peggy Carter. I would love to have tea with you. Or perhaps some wine. [There's a wryness in his voice that makes it clear he's not trying to pick her up.] I've already got myself a nice little table at the Winery.

[ And she's in no way attempting to do the same. She just has a profound respect for older sounding gents. ]

I could be persuaded. Food, wine and the arts is usually a good start to a friendship. [ or a rebellion ] Shall I join you in half an hour then? I would hate to keep you from your reading. [ assuming ]

By all means.

[He'll just be chilling with his book, in no rush to go anywhere or any worries about what's happening.]

[ a man who can take his ease even in the midst of adversary. It's these men, she understands the most. Because life didn't stop even if one was having a panic attack. It's that look as he reads, slowly turning the pages of his book that makes Peggy suspect that Gideon might be the man she had talked to over the network and with a graceful sashay across the floor, she holds out a hand. ]

Hello. I believe we were talking a bit earlier? I'm Peggy Carter.

[Being a gentleman, he stands up as she approaches and reaches out to shake her hand.]

A pleasure to meet you, Peggy. Jason Gideon. [He gestures for her to take a seat as he does so himself.]

[ she smiled graciously as she moved to take the offered seat, tucking her legs neatly underneath the table and crossing her ankles as any proper lady should. ]

Mr. Gideon, I believe the pleasure may end up being all mine.

[ she glanced down to the book on the table, tilting her head to better read the title. ]

Is this what you were quoting from earlier?

This? [He holds up the book.] No, this is Crime & Punishment. Fyodor Dostoevsky.
