All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.

Edgar Allen Poe

[The man's tone is thoughtful, the words clearly intended for himself more than anyone else.]

And what a dream.

[ action ]
[An older man sits at a small corner table in the Winery, sipping a glass of red wine and reading Crime & Punishment. The situation is too strange for him to be concerned; it has to be some kind of dream. So why worry?]

[What's this? It takes Gideon a few minutes of fumbling to figure out how to work the device -- to hear Spencer's message and record a response.]

Spencer. So you're here too.

[There's a definite smile in his voice. No surprise (this is his dream, of course the people he cares about will show up in it), just warm regard.]

Yeah, I've uh... I've been here a while. [ Cautious and perhaps even a little fragile. It's easy to deduce that Gideon is from before. That he doesn't know yet. ]

Where are you..?

[Now that he's spoken more, Gideon can hear the difference in Reid's voice. It's older, more careful, with an undercurrent of pain he hasn't heard before.]

A charming little restaurant called the Winery. Do you know where it is?

[ His own sector. Literally five minutes from the apartment and maybe that's what pushes him to make that split-second decision to go rather than agonize over this meeting some more. ]

I do... it's close by. [ Beat. ] I'll be right over.

[ Partially unaware that he's moving at all Reid makes the brisk walk to the Winery, heart pounding like a hammer against his ribs and mind buzzing with theories that he's stubbornly shoving aside for later. This is one horse's mouth he's not going to take a closer look at and despite the deep-seated conflict he's harboring when it comes to Gideon, he can't let this chance slip by untaken.

The emotional consequences will just have to wait until later.

He arrives some five-ten minutes later, dark eyes scanning the restaurant only to widen when he does spot his old mentor. Unsure of how to handle this he lingers by the door, looking very much like he's just seen a ghost. ]

[Gideon has long ago mastered the art of reading a book while keeping an eye on his surroundings. He sees Reid the moment the younger man walks through the door, and waits for him to approach.

When he doesn't, Gideon sets down his book. The look on the young doctor's face worries him, but for the moment, he pretends like Reid simply hadn't seen him.]

Over here. [He waves.]

[ Be brave, young profiler. He draws a steadying breath before crossing the final distance, movements stiff and nervous. If he could, he'd muster up a smile but there is no such luck. ]

It's, uh... [ Clears his throat. ] It's been a while.

Sit down. Tell me about it.

[ He nods, easily giving in to the request. It's pretty fascinating, how quickly everything goes back to feeling the way it should even though nothing is the same. ]

You left the BAU a few years ago. We, uhm... we lost touch. I haven't seen you since.

[He's thought about leaving the BAU so many times. Clearly his subconscious has decided to play out the consequences of that decision for him.]

I'm sorry. How are you handling it?

[ Not well at all is the answer to this but he's not giving it, partially because it might just make him cry. He swallows in an attempt to steady his voice, knowing fully well how easily Gideon can see right through him. ]

You know how it is, there's always a new case to handle. We deal. [ We. ] Anyway, it's been years. You had your reasons.

[Gideon sees right through the facade, and even if this Spencer is a figment of his subconscious, it hurts to see him ache like this.

Gideon leans forward and puts a fatherly hand on Reid's.]

I'm sorry.

[ There really aren't words to describe how this makes him feel. It's the kind of moment you want to cut out and keep safe closest to your heart, wrap it up in tissue, tuck it into your wallet so you can take it out whenever you need a reminder that it really happened.

Or didn't happen, as the case might be here. He chooses not to think about that just now, instead swallowing and finally mustering up that smile. ]

It's good to see you again.

I'm glad. It's good to see you too. [Even though it hasn't been that long since Gideon has seen his young friend, it feels like the right thing to say.]

Tell me more about this place we're in.

[ He shifts his weight a little, falling into the old walking-encyclopedia dynamic that he hasn't had a reason to use in a while. It was always easier with Gideon. ]

It's a prison located at the bottom of the sea. Technically we should be too far down for any major life to be sustainable outside the dome glass, if the data provided by the wardens is to be believed, but there's been at least one sighting of a massive sea creatures possessing some strength. This is the second out of three prisons that we've been in contact with — the first was similar in structure, although with less variety in architecture. The third we were only in temporarily during emergency repairs and resembled what we'd think of as a normal prison a lot more... communal showers, sleeping quarters, food rations, etc.

As far as I can tell, this is a real world application of the many worlds theory in quantum physics. A timeline is bent from its course, or something like that... several versions of the same individual can exist at the same time without danger to the space-time continuum and it's not uncommon for someone to have been here previously without remembering it.

We, uhm. There are some theories about whether or not this is actually real or a highly advanced form of virtual reality. We don't have any proof yet, but some things just add up to support it.

[ This right here is something he's been playing extremely close to the sweatervest, but... well. Gideon. He'll always bypass those safety lines, for good and bad. ]

A while back, we were temporarily transferred to a different prison. There was a strange sensation when we woke up, like a... a tingling in the skin. Nothing too noticeable, just something that felt off. Certain physical features were wrong too. Small things, like hair length or color, bruises disappearing...

I don't think I would've put too much weight to it if it wasn't for the fact that I've experienced that tingling before, shortly after I arrived here. There was a coup and for a short while, a couple of us woke up in an exact replica of the dome we'd previously been in. Our group were the only ones awake and there was no way of waking up those that hadn't joined us. Then there's the body storage...
