Class 004: Day 228 : Vampires-Guest Lecture
[He'd been debating starting a class of his own of some sort when Sam had asked him to guest lecture. The topic was an easy--if not somewhat controversial--one for Zero to tackle. His views aren't exactly agreed upon by everyone, no matter how much they have changed during his time in Marina. Zero has been in the facility for longer than almost everyone else, remembers his entire stay, and has interacted with vampires from almost every world--even if he was one of the only ones to know they were a vampire. More importantly, he takes a personal interest in each of their home worlds and how everything works.
He's even befriended more than a few of them. Lives with and is sort of dating one.
He also kills them for a living and is known in the facility for his hatred of them--all while secretly being one of them.
He looks around the room at the number of attendee's for the popular subject. Controversial indeed.]
I wonder how many of you showed up just out of curiosity to see me be the one to do this lecture?
[He pushes away from the desk and moves to the white board. Uncapping a marker, Zero scribbles a single word across the surface before beginning. VAMPIRES.]
As I'm sure we're all aware by now, today's topic is vampires. As Sam likes to give out a disclaimer--so will I. What you learn here may not apply to your world, to every vampire in Marina or any vampire that arrives in Marina from this point on.
Overview: Vampires
Vampires-in simplest terms- are beings that live, crave, desire, and/or require the life source from another living being--typically in the form of blood.
There are as many different kinds of vampires as the worlds they come from, but there are a number of other traits that appear to be common from world to world. As vampires are typically considered predators, these traits all support that notion as they are used to either overpower or lure their prey in for attack.
Super-human strength speed and healing
Enhanced senses
Compulsion
Attractiveness
Along with these abilities, vampires typically possess fangs in order to obtain their blood from their victims--the obviousness of those fangs differs from world to world but most of them possess them.
The ability to 'create' new vampires from an already existing human is another ability that is found in almost every world. Typically done via a vampire bite, the process for this differs from world to world, some require the exchange of blood between the vampire and its victim, some do not. In some worlds, only select vampires hold this ability, in others--all possess this power.
Personally, I find their differences more entertaining. Some worlds, the vampires have died and possess no heartbeat. In others, they are alive and able to produce children of their own.
Case Study: Rido Kuran
Day 35 was new inmate day in the previous Marina Asylum. Along with the latest batch of inmates was a vampire from my home world. Rido Kuran longed for power and was not afraid to use the power he did possess in order to immediately wreak havoc across the entire dome.
Rido viewed everyone as toys, objects to possess, play with and discard as he viewed necessary. In the afternoon of the 35th, the very day he arrived, he compelled a teenage boy to his side, where he devoured and killed him in front of the network.
A resident magic user took it upon himself to block Rido's presence from the facility as he took another member hostage. But a number of teams searched him out and on day 37, Rido's body was destroyed, but he was unable to be killed.
By day 43, he had regenerated his body completely and continued his 'game' with the facility until he left the facility in a dimensional stabilizer accident on day 50. He has not returned.
Practical: Prevention and Defense
Most worlds possess a 'natural enemy' for the vampire. Those that are given the job of eliminating them. Dhampir, Slayer, Hunter--sometimes they are 'born' into the position as a gift they were provided. Sometimes they are humans that desire revenge upon vampires and decide to take it upon themselves as a job.
Vampires are not easy to battle because of their strength, speed and healing abilities. I don't ever recommend going up against one at all without proper training or knowledge of exactly what you are dealing with. Again, this is an issue where the differences from world to world can make a huge difference. There are vampires in this facility right now in which there is nothing here capable of killing them--even if they wanted to die. There are others where I could kill them just by pulling off a leg of a table and stabbing them in the 'heart'.
But if you must know what is supposed to work:
Wooden or silver stake to the heart
Chop off their head
Destroy their heart
Silver crosses
Silver bullets
Sunlight
Holy water
...garlic...
You'll have varying degrees of success depending on who you try it on.
If you are concerned about a vampire in the facility, take your concern to the Defense Force. There are a number of people there that specialize in vampires and can assist you.
