Class 004: Day 228 : Vampires-Guest Lecture
[He'd been debating starting a class of his own of some sort when Sam had asked him to guest lecture. The topic was an easy--if not somewhat controversial--one for Zero to tackle. His views aren't exactly agreed upon by everyone, no matter how much they have changed during his time in Marina. Zero has been in the facility for longer than almost everyone else, remembers his entire stay, and has interacted with vampires from almost every world--even if he was one of the only ones to know they were a vampire. More importantly, he takes a personal interest in each of their home worlds and how everything works.

He's even befriended more than a few of them. Lives with and is sort of dating one.

He also kills them for a living and is known in the facility for his hatred of them--all while secretly being one of them.

He looks around the room at the number of attendee's for the popular subject. Controversial indeed.]

I wonder how many of you showed up just out of curiosity to see me be the one to do this lecture?

[He pushes away from the desk and moves to the white board. Uncapping a marker, Zero scribbles a single word across the surface before beginning. VAMPIRES.]

As I'm sure we're all aware by now, today's topic is vampires. As Sam likes to give out a disclaimer--so will I. What you learn here may not apply to your world, to every vampire in Marina or any vampire that arrives in Marina from this point on.

Overview: Vampires
Vampires-in simplest terms- are beings that live, crave, desire, and/or require the life source from another living being--typically in the form of blood.

There are as many different kinds of vampires as the worlds they come from, but there are a number of other traits that appear to be common from world to world. As vampires are typically considered predators, these traits all support that notion as they are used to either overpower or lure their prey in for attack.

Super-human strength speed and healing
Enhanced senses
Compulsion
Attractiveness

Along with these abilities, vampires typically possess fangs in order to obtain their blood from their victims--the obviousness of those fangs differs from world to world but most of them possess them.

The ability to 'create' new vampires from an already existing human is another ability that is found in almost every world. Typically done via a vampire bite, the process for this differs from world to world, some require the exchange of blood between the vampire and its victim, some do not. In some worlds, only select vampires hold this ability, in others--all possess this power.

Personally, I find their differences more entertaining. Some worlds, the vampires have died and possess no heartbeat. In others, they are alive and able to produce children of their own.

Case Study: Rido Kuran
Day 35 was new inmate day in the previous Marina Asylum. Along with the latest batch of inmates was a vampire from my home world. Rido Kuran longed for power and was not afraid to use the power he did possess in order to immediately wreak havoc across the entire dome.

Rido viewed everyone as toys, objects to possess, play with and discard as he viewed necessary. In the afternoon of the 35th, the very day he arrived, he compelled a teenage boy to his side, where he devoured and killed him in front of the network.

A resident magic user took it upon himself to block Rido's presence from the facility as he took another member hostage. But a number of teams searched him out and on day 37, Rido's body was destroyed, but he was unable to be killed.

By day 43, he had regenerated his body completely and continued his 'game' with the facility until he left the facility in a dimensional stabilizer accident on day 50. He has not returned.

Practical: Prevention and Defense
Most worlds possess a 'natural enemy' for the vampire. Those that are given the job of eliminating them. Dhampir, Slayer, Hunter--sometimes they are 'born' into the position as a gift they were provided. Sometimes they are humans that desire revenge upon vampires and decide to take it upon themselves as a job.

Vampires are not easy to battle because of their strength, speed and healing abilities. I don't ever recommend going up against one at all without proper training or knowledge of exactly what you are dealing with. Again, this is an issue where the differences from world to world can make a huge difference. There are vampires in this facility right now in which there is nothing here capable of killing them--even if they wanted to die. There are others where I could kill them just by pulling off a leg of a table and stabbing them in the 'heart'.

But if you must know what is supposed to work:
Wooden or silver stake to the heart
Chop off their head
Destroy their heart
Silver crosses
Silver bullets
Sunlight
Holy water
...garlic...

You'll have varying degrees of success depending on who you try it on.

If you are concerned about a vampire in the facility, take your concern to the Defense Force. There are a number of people there that specialize in vampires and can assist you.

Questions and Discussion
Are there any questions?

[ Peggy raised a brow and turned to face this newcomer ]

Gone ugly on me?

[ she cracked a half smile ] I'm rather happy to say that the answer to that is no, that has yet to be my misfortune.

Can't tell if you're the lucky one or I am. Got to see it my very first day, right up next to my eyeball.

[ she really does not like the headsets. but for now, she taps a pencil on her notebook, a little nervous about the class' revelations about the new dangers of prison. ]

Guy told me he was a vampire, then in a blink it looked like he'd got the mumps all at once, and then he changed his face back to how it was.

[ ah... Now she understands. She shares some of the same unease were the devices are concerned. They are, of a certainty, too distracting to wear all the time. ]

I see... that will certainly need to be something I'm more aware of. I'm not at all sure how well I like knowing that these creatures are capable of changing their appearance either. Although... [ she paused thoughtfully, tapping the end of her own pencil to her chin. ] Perhaps feigning illness is how they lure in their victims. That would be clever.

Maybe?

[ betty considers it, and jots a quick note down ("fake sick people???"). ] Seemed more like showing off, at least to me. You know how some fellas get, gotta puff up their feathers and let you know how tough they are.

[ her lips immediately quirked up in a smile and her voice is dry as she comments. ]

Yes... I do believe I've meet a few of those. I've usually found that putting them in their place does the trick. I don't suppose you think that might work on a vampire, do you?

[ it certainly couldn't be worse then running away, she hoped. ]

[ actually laughs, short and with a slow shake of her head. ]

If we could make 'em turn tail with a good smack, I don't think we'd have to worry. Couldn't hurt to put some more garlic on my sandwiches from now on, though.

And keep a stake in our purse. Unless, of course, you prefer to keep your weapons a bit more easily accessible. [ like tucked within a well placed garter belt. Although that can get awkward, if one isn't careful. ]

Maybe. [ it's something to consider, at least. better than the garlic thing, more permanent. which, while good, has some less happy associations than just 'getting away from a vampire.' ] Don't exactly know if that'd be okay, though. The wardens might not take to everyone running around with weapons considering their thoughts on self-defense.

A little punishment, I should think, would be worth saving your life.

[ she glanced down at Betty's pencil, but refrained from pointing out its many uses. Sometimes, even the mundane should stay mundane. ]

But regardless, we shouldn't worry over things that have yet to come to pass. If our Mr. Kiryuu is to be believed, it's been some time since an official vampire attack was reported.

Suppose so. Better to keep the self-defense stuff in mind just in case. I'm just glad we don't have to worry about the Luftwaffe and vampires. [ a joke! one she realizes no one probably gets because it seems everyone is from some weird, far distant future. ]

[ it's a joke Peggy gets and her smile is immediate and heart felt. ]

I'm not sure which would be worse, actually. The threat we can expect at any moment or the threat that could be from any one of our acquaintance. [ she sighed ] But I suppose there's very little difference when you're at war.

[ spies and counter spies. They were everywhere. ]
