Class 004: Day 228 : Vampires-Guest Lecture
[He'd been debating starting a class of his own of some sort when Sam had asked him to guest lecture. The topic was an easy--if not somewhat controversial--one for Zero to tackle. His views aren't exactly agreed upon by everyone, no matter how much they have changed during his time in Marina. Zero has been in the facility for longer than almost everyone else, remembers his entire stay, and has interacted with vampires from almost every world--even if he was one of the only ones to know they were a vampire. More importantly, he takes a personal interest in each of their home worlds and how everything works.

He's even befriended more than a few of them. Lives with and is sort of dating one.

He also kills them for a living and is known in the facility for his hatred of them--all while secretly being one of them.

He looks around the room at the number of attendee's for the popular subject. Controversial indeed.]

I wonder how many of you showed up just out of curiosity to see me be the one to do this lecture?

[He pushes away from the desk and moves to the white board. Uncapping a marker, Zero scribbles a single word across the surface before beginning. VAMPIRES.]

As I'm sure we're all aware by now, today's topic is vampires. As Sam likes to give out a disclaimer--so will I. What you learn here may not apply to your world, to every vampire in Marina or any vampire that arrives in Marina from this point on.

Overview: Vampires
Vampires-in simplest terms- are beings that live, crave, desire, and/or require the life source from another living being--typically in the form of blood.

There are as many different kinds of vampires as the worlds they come from, but there are a number of other traits that appear to be common from world to world. As vampires are typically considered predators, these traits all support that notion as they are used to either overpower or lure their prey in for attack.

Super-human strength speed and healing
Enhanced senses
Compulsion
Attractiveness

Along with these abilities, vampires typically possess fangs in order to obtain their blood from their victims--the obviousness of those fangs differs from world to world but most of them possess them.

The ability to 'create' new vampires from an already existing human is another ability that is found in almost every world. Typically done via a vampire bite, the process for this differs from world to world, some require the exchange of blood between the vampire and its victim, some do not. In some worlds, only select vampires hold this ability, in others--all possess this power.

Personally, I find their differences more entertaining. Some worlds, the vampires have died and possess no heartbeat. In others, they are alive and able to produce children of their own.

Case Study: Rido Kuran
Day 35 was new inmate day in the previous Marina Asylum. Along with the latest batch of inmates was a vampire from my home world. Rido Kuran longed for power and was not afraid to use the power he did possess in order to immediately wreak havoc across the entire dome.

Rido viewed everyone as toys, objects to possess, play with and discard as he viewed necessary. In the afternoon of the 35th, the very day he arrived, he compelled a teenage boy to his side, where he devoured and killed him in front of the network.

A resident magic user took it upon himself to block Rido's presence from the facility as he took another member hostage. But a number of teams searched him out and on day 37, Rido's body was destroyed, but he was unable to be killed.

By day 43, he had regenerated his body completely and continued his 'game' with the facility until he left the facility in a dimensional stabilizer accident on day 50. He has not returned.

Practical: Prevention and Defense
Most worlds possess a 'natural enemy' for the vampire. Those that are given the job of eliminating them. Dhampir, Slayer, Hunter--sometimes they are 'born' into the position as a gift they were provided. Sometimes they are humans that desire revenge upon vampires and decide to take it upon themselves as a job.

Vampires are not easy to battle because of their strength, speed and healing abilities. I don't ever recommend going up against one at all without proper training or knowledge of exactly what you are dealing with. Again, this is an issue where the differences from world to world can make a huge difference. There are vampires in this facility right now in which there is nothing here capable of killing them--even if they wanted to die. There are others where I could kill them just by pulling off a leg of a table and stabbing them in the 'heart'.

But if you must know what is supposed to work:
Wooden or silver stake to the heart
Chop off their head
Destroy their heart
Silver crosses
Silver bullets
Sunlight
Holy water
...garlic...

You'll have varying degrees of success depending on who you try it on.

If you are concerned about a vampire in the facility, take your concern to the Defense Force. There are a number of people there that specialize in vampires and can assist you.

Questions and Discussion
Are there any questions?

[There is the slightest of pauses as Zero's gaze flickers to Yuuki for just a moment before his attention is back on Reid. He skirted around that issue for a specific reason. He tends to be slightly biased, even if his views are a lot more open to vampires than they have been in the past.]

No, it's not simple at all. At their very core nature, vampires natural prey tends to be humans, placing them above humanity on the food chain. They are stronger, faster and typically possess physical traits that are in line with the presumed ideal of humanity. They are the strong and humanity is the weak. If you throw a human into a room of starving vampires, the chances of them coming out unharmed aren't exactly low. But even humans have been known to resort to cannibalism when backed into a corner and starving.

Each vampire's risk has to evaluated on a case by case basis, just as anyone else. But just the fact that someone is a vampire can raise their level of danger primarily because they do naturally prey on humanity and require blood or other life sources to survive. But their environment and experiences are going to make a difference on how much of a risk they are at indiscriminately attacking someone.

[Zero uncaps the marker again and scribbles the phrase 'Risk Factors' across the board.]

The first thing we need to look at is the sort of world they come from. Are they alive or dead? Do they possess a heart or soul?

[ Yuuki is a big reason why he's raising this question. Mostly because she raised it in his class and this seems like a good way to get clarification/revenge/all of the above. He jots down a few notes before launching the follow-up question. ]

And how would you determine that?

[Of COURSE she did... So you're punishing him for her actions? Whatever, he can go on like this forever. He gives Reid something of a smirk before starting.]

Me, personally? Or the average Marina inmate?

[He has something of an unfair advantage. Hunters in his world can instinctively identify vampires. He also, being a vampire, is sensitive to heartbeats and the rush of blood in veins.]

Most inmates in Marina aren't the only ones from their world. You can learn a lot about people by questioning them personally, people close to them, others from their world, friends they've made here. Observation. Do they bleed? Do they have a heartbeat? Is their skin warm or cool to the touch? Have they been here before? Are there any prior incidents?

If you're lucky you can get them to discuss the turning process with you--which gives you a number of answers just in itself. Not that everyone is willing to share, but you'd be surprised at the things you can get just by asking.

[ Hey, Sam's the one setting up guest lecturers. He couldn't have know that someone else was going to take the hit! The answer amuses him though and he can't quite keep that under wraps, a soft snerk worming its way into his voice. ]

Actually, I think I know exactly how much you can find out just by asking. [ Profiler. ] Still, that's very much focusing on the physiological aspects. I'm sure it gives you ample information but it's not really answering my question.

[This is a several step process, Reid. Hang in there. Currently under risk factors, he's placed the words 'Alive' and 'Dead' on the board. ]

No, but it's still going to be the first one you're going to want to determine because the chances that your vampire lacks a heart or soul increases the chances of them lacking a conscious or moral code.

[This time under 'Dead' he scribbles 'soul/heart/morals' and 'none']

These are your only two choices. If the vampire is dead, they are either going to be 'good' or 'bad'. Typically their only need for survival is blood and being dead and lacking blood, they can not feed off each other.

If your vampire possesses morals, they will likely find guilt with feeding off humans and struggle with that need. They won't want to hurt others but the need and desire for blood can overwhelm them if they don't feed. If they deny themselves, their attacks will happen at random and will either be someone close to them or convenient at the time of attack. Possibly they will find someone close to them that will agree to feed them, saving them from the cycle of randomly attacking someone from hunger.

[Under 'soul/heart/morals' he branches out into two more sections 'Uncontrolled Attack Cycle' 'Controlled Feeding'. The whole whiteboard is beginning to resemble a flow chart.]

These vampires don't want to harm so much as they have the physical need for blood in order to survive and live peacefully. The goal is to get them on a controlled feeding for the safety of others and it's usually not difficult to get them to do that. They aren't 'bad' so much as uncontrolled.

[Moving to the 'None' section, he scribbles 'Instinct'.]

Lack of conscious, morals or a soul leaves you with a vampire who lives off their base instincts and nothing more. They will attack indiscriminately, just for fun, pleasure or need. Their victim's life means less than their personal needs and wants and they often leave a trail of bodies behind. They have no pattern and just react off their moments desires without thought.

They are very deadly and dangerous, but because of how view their world, they are easy to track down and destroy. They are little more than monsters and act out of self-preservation and survival--not morals.

Psychologically, there isn't much to think about with the dead vampires. Just observe them for a time and you'll see exactly what is going on with them.

[He moves to the other side of the board to the 'Alive' side.]

Any questions before I start with the more complicated one?

[ As he listens Reid works on his own internal mind map, ever so often letting some of it spill out in the form of another jotted down note. Putting it in terms he's familiar with. Psychotic breaks, disorganized versus the organized, need-driven UnSubs... it does fit, once you find the patterns. Maybe this will make the upcoming Criminology classes that much easier to plan.

He glances around at the question, before nodding. Go on, if no one else objects. ]

[No other questions? Good.]

The vampires that come from a world where they are 'alive' are much more complicated with almost countless differences and possibilities. This is because environment plays more of a role in determining how much risk they are. Which is why knowing as much about each world is important.

[Off the top of his head he gives a couple of examples to demonstrate this.]

Again, to start we have to begin with something physical--which is how vampires are made. Each world does things a little differently. In one world they might be born this way, passing on the gene from generation to generation-biologically being a vampire from the beginning. Other worlds may require the bite of a vampire in order to create new vampires--such as catching some sort of 'condition' that changes you from that moment on.

In most worlds I've found the latter to be the norm within worlds, but typically in worlds where there is a biological reproductive basis--both types do exist. So either vampires are able to reproduce and make more vampires--or they can't reproduce vampires at all. Only create them.

[He splits the alive section into 'Born' and 'Created'.]

And here is where the 'rules' of the world, culture, environment and personal experiences come into play. When I refer to 'rules' I'm referring to the physical impact just being a vampire requires each individual vampire to go through in that world.

In worlds where vampires can be born as well as created, there typically develops some sort of hierarchy among themselves depending on if they have the ability to cross-breed with humans or the formerly human vampires they have created. A class system is created naturally and how humanity is viewed by vampires is going to instantly create an impact on that class system.

Since humans are typically the prey of vampires it's likely going to leave them pretty low on that class system. This adds another issue to the vampires created in those worlds--as they used to be humans.

[Under 'Born' he writes the word 'hierarchy' and moves to the created side.]

So what we're left with are the created vampires, which we've touched on just a little already with the class system. Whatever physical and biological changes impact them because of this transformation: strength, changes to their brain chemistry, control over bloodlust, loss of soul-- these changes from world to world can make a huge impact on how dangerous they are. A vampire from a world where the transformation impacts their brain and moral compass is obviously going to hold more immediate danger than one from a world in which there is no impact to those areas.

[He puts the marker down after writing two question marks beneath 'Created']

But say you have two vampires from the same world--both turned around the same time from a world where vampires can only be created. Physically, the bloodlust is difficult for both of them and if they don't feed they slowly lose their mental capacity--leaving them at risk of attacking someone if they don't drink. The blood of humans is more desired and effective than the blood of vampires, but the consumption of vampire blood is possible and helps. Their world creates a 'sire' bond with the vampire who turned them and there is no way of breaking that--both of them were sired by the same vampire. Vampires are a secret in their world and their enemy is a small group of humans who have been personally impacted by their killing or transformation of a loved one. They have no real powers to fight vampires, just training and the desire for revenge.

So what is their risk? I do pretty much what you do, Dr. Reid--I profile them and assess it.
