Day 228 l Video l Open
[The old man on the screen looks dangerously calm for having just arrived in an undersea prison. Saetan has taken the time to find an elegant, old fashioned looking suit before switching on his communicator. Not only that but he has actually arranged himself in the library, and looks as at home and in control of the situation as if he were in his study. He does not look like a frightened new prisoner, which is entirely the point. He's not someone who is used to being powerless and being held captive is not about to make him change his attitude. When he does speak his voice is like thin ice, dark and cold with something deadly lurking underneath.]

I’d like to speak to someone in authority, immediately. I heard your clever little announcement, and you obviously know who I am. Prisoner or not you should respect me enough to speak to me face to face. I’m going to find where you’ve taken my Jewels eventually, and it would be in your best interest to resolve all of this before I do.

[Grounding people is her specialty! That, or irritating them with her calm kindness when they're so agitated. This man seems to be the former.]

You're not wrong. But the Engineers are elusive and enigmatic, to be generous. We haven't been terribly successful getting information from them in the past. That's not to say it's impossible, but they tend to be more interested in fighting amongst themselves or teasing us than in anything useful.

I do wish I had better news for you. [Her smile shifts, apologetic.]

[Whereas if he has any weakness it's for young ladies like this. It's the same reason he's been so quick to adopt every friend or stray Jaenelle has dragged home.]

They've been known to fight amongst themselves?

It's quite alright, young lady. I can hardly fault you for being the bearer of bad news. How long have you been in this place?

When they've been on the network, yes. They seem to go on without end and without sense. Although we haven't heard from those since the move.

I should explain. I've been here one hundred and twenty days, in total. Although when I first entered we were in another dome, with another Warden. It was only fifty days ago that we were moved here.

I'm Lacus Clyne. It may be more convenient for you to know with whom you're speaking.

So they don't often involve themselves in the running of this place? I'm sorry, I don't mean to interrogate you, but I understandably have a great many questions.

[He visibly bristles at the notion that she's been locked up here for so long.] I have absolutely no intention of prying into your personal life, but I find it impossible to believe you could have done anything so terrible to deserve being trapped in a place like this.

Forgive me, my dear, I must have misplaced my manners. Saetan SaDiablo. It's very nice to meet you, Lacus.

Understandably. I wish there were more I could answer. The Engineers must involve themselves, and we expect that certain strange happenings are caused by their interventions, but many times we don't hear from them in order to determine for certain. There is much about this place that we have yet to decipher, unfortunately.

[Her expression brightens with the greeting, and she offers something between a bow and a curtsy.] The pleasure is mine. Although I do not believe any of us have done things worthy of being trapped in such a place, I must correct your assumption. I could excuse it because we were in wartime, but I did commit several crimes.

Then the day to day running of this place is left to these wardens?

[He smiles, and nods his head in return. He would have returned the bow but he's old and even though he managed to find a cane along with his new suit his bad leg is still stiff enough to keep him in his chair for now.] Maybe so, but I've always firmly believed intention matters far more than the severity of the crime when punishing someone for what they have done.

It is, yes. And they regard us with what I would consider to be a a range of indifference to disdain, depending on the moment.

[She considers his words and then nods once he's finished.] I quite agree. Unfortunately, the Wardens indifference comes into play yet again in matters of our crimes. I have known young children here who could not possibly be held responsible for their actions. And yet the Wardens have insisted it was not in error.

[A bit of that darkness creeps back into his tone as he hears this information.] Well, one way or another I'm guaranteed to have the last word with the people keeping us here, and when I do I'll be sure to ask just what the justification for that was.

[Lacus doesn't approve of threats, but this one she can understand. Saetan isn't wrong in what he says, or how he intends to act.] If you get that chance, I hope you get results to your satisfaction. It would give us all a great peace of mind.

[There's something so matter-of-fact about his tone that it somehow changes from a threat to a dangerously calm and honest statement.] Everyone dies eventually, lady, and then they come to me. I've gotten very good at being patient.

[He's surprisingly gentle in his reply.] I'm the High Lord of Hell, sweetheart. I'm sorry, I've gotten rather too used to my name being enough of an introduction.

Oh, I see. [She tends not to presume things from just names -- ironic, because hers suits her perfectly. And she won't assume things because of his title, either.] I didn't want to make assumptions.

You must be very powerful, indeed. I imagine being here and having that taken away would be very disorienting.

A kind way to put it, but yes, it is disorienting. In all honesty I don't like the idea of something strong enough to bring me here, and I like the idea of what will happen at home without me even less.

That is an unpleasant thought. The Wardens claim we have been replaced with another version of ourselves, but I'm not sure I find that thought very pleasant, either.

With escape and explanation currently out of our reach all I've been able to do is manage the best I can while here. If there's anything I could do to assist you to that end...

[If he ever gets his hands on the people responsible for this he is going to take great pleasure in peeling the skin from their bodies one inch at at time, and his expression says as much.]

Thank you, darling, I truly appreciate the offer. How many prisoners are kept here? How are we expected to live?

Anywhere from a hundred to a few hundred inmates, it depends greatly on the day. Sometimes we have many new arrivals and sometimes...

[Her pause is small, but telling.] Sometimes people vanish.

But as far as survival, or basic needs are met. Clothing and food are free, as are the apartments in Sectors two through four. I say that with a certain skepticism, however, since I believe we have many needs that are overlooked or considered luxuries.

[He's silently filing all this information away, turning it all over in his mind looking for a way to use it to his advantage and finding nothing.]

This may sound like an odd question, but supposing we have more unique dietary needs?

They too are provided for. We have several vampires here, and the Wardens provide several types of blood for their use. Or I suppose they could find a willing donor.

Is blood what you require, or something else?

Blood, yes. [He looks decidedly unhappy and a bit uncomfortable about the admission.] I'm surprised there are others here who need it. Also, pardon my curiosity, but what is a vampire?

[Of course she pardons it!] It's not my area of expertise, but I'll do my best.

A vampire is a creature that feeds on human blood, and typically has certain special abilities, such as speed and strength, and occasionally other magical capabilities. In my world they only exist in stories. Some vampires here used to be human and were turned by a bite, some were born vampiric. Some breeds of vampire have certain weaknesses to silver and daylight -- though not the daylight in the dome, thankfully.

Some people consider vampires to be dangerous predators, but we've managed to live here more or less peacefully, save a few incidents.

Really? Some parts of that sound like Guardians, but aside from the sensitivity to sunlight and the blood I don't see any similarities. It takes a great deal of power to become a Guardian, so we are not particularly common. [There are only two others besides himself, and he hadn't even known about Cassandra until recently.]

And I certainly don't consider myself a predator. I take it these vampires are not blessed with an abundance of self-control?

Some of them are not, no. But we haven't had an incident in quite some time, thankfully.

You certainly don't sound like one, either. I am new to superhuman beings, relatively, but I've found that those who are upfront about their nature are far less likely to be a danger. Unless of course they're provoked. So I thank you for your candor, Saetan.

Thank you, sweetheart. I had my reasons for becoming what I am, but I've never liked the blood offering aspect of it. I prefer lamb to human, frankly.

I can imagine. I don't believe I would aspire to be anything other than I am, but I think that aspect would trouble me also.

I'm sure there would be lamb's blood available at the Blood Shack, if you request it. I understand there are many animal bloods available.
