Day 228 l Video l Open
[The old man on the screen looks dangerously calm for having just arrived in an undersea prison. Saetan has taken the time to find an elegant, old fashioned looking suit before switching on his communicator. Not only that but he has actually arranged himself in the library, and looks as at home and in control of the situation as if he were in his study. He does not look like a frightened new prisoner, which is entirely the point. He's not someone who is used to being powerless and being held captive is not about to make him change his attitude. When he does speak his voice is like thin ice, dark and cold with something deadly lurking underneath.]

I’d like to speak to someone in authority, immediately. I heard your clever little announcement, and you obviously know who I am. Prisoner or not you should respect me enough to speak to me face to face. I’m going to find where you’ve taken my Jewels eventually, and it would be in your best interest to resolve all of this before I do.

[Of course she pardons it!] It's not my area of expertise, but I'll do my best.

A vampire is a creature that feeds on human blood, and typically has certain special abilities, such as speed and strength, and occasionally other magical capabilities. In my world they only exist in stories. Some vampires here used to be human and were turned by a bite, some were born vampiric. Some breeds of vampire have certain weaknesses to silver and daylight -- though not the daylight in the dome, thankfully.

Some people consider vampires to be dangerous predators, but we've managed to live here more or less peacefully, save a few incidents.

Really? Some parts of that sound like Guardians, but aside from the sensitivity to sunlight and the blood I don't see any similarities. It takes a great deal of power to become a Guardian, so we are not particularly common. [There are only two others besides himself, and he hadn't even known about Cassandra until recently.]

And I certainly don't consider myself a predator. I take it these vampires are not blessed with an abundance of self-control?

Some of them are not, no. But we haven't had an incident in quite some time, thankfully.

You certainly don't sound like one, either. I am new to superhuman beings, relatively, but I've found that those who are upfront about their nature are far less likely to be a danger. Unless of course they're provoked. So I thank you for your candor, Saetan.

Thank you, sweetheart. I had my reasons for becoming what I am, but I've never liked the blood offering aspect of it. I prefer lamb to human, frankly.

I can imagine. I don't believe I would aspire to be anything other than I am, but I think that aspect would trouble me also.

I'm sure there would be lamb's blood available at the Blood Shack, if you request it. I understand there are many animal bloods available.

Then you're a great deal more sensible than most people I meet, my dear, and I commend you for it.

Thank you, that makes things a great deal easier on my part. Just what is this Blood Shack?

Thank you. [It's a gift of hers, being quite happy with who she is.]

The Blood Shack is a bar-like environment, run by vampires. Non-vampires are welcome there as well, for mundane drinks, but the original purpose of the place was to provide blood to those that require it. My understanding is the vampire that took it over wished for a sense of community between us.

[And he appreciates it. He's the sort who becomes fond of people quickly, and she's already working her way into his heart.]

Are there many of these creatures in this place? Or any others? Eryians or the like?

I've not heard of Eryians, though that may not necessarily mean they are not here. Nor do I know the exact population of vampires.

There are other beings here that have powers, but I believe there are others who would do a far superior job of explaining their characteristics than I. In my homeworld such things remain beyond our understanding. We rely more on science and technology.

I was born on a space colony not far from Earth. The people of my homeworld have only begun to explore and live in space, and so many people continue living on Earth as well. I lived there for a time, near the seashore. It's a lovely place.

People living in space? Hells fire, what will they think of next? [The distinctly victorian vibe he's been giving off applies to technology in his world, too. The idea of space travel is one of the most bizarre things he's heard in awhile. Also he's old and doesn't do technology.]

[An easy smile, she's used to this particular conversation.] There are those here that have traveled far more extensively in space than I have.

I wish I could show it to people here. It's quite lovely scenery.

Really? How extraordinary. Its not something I've ever given any thought to at all. How do you accomplish such a thing?

I would love to see it someday, my dear. I'm rather sensitive to sunlight and it's been a very, very long time since I saw the sea.

It's quite a long story, much of which is technical background. But in short: capsules were designed which could support human life in a vacuum-type environment, and it was simply a matter of using those to facilitate the building of colonies. They're designed to be much like Earth in flora and fauna, but I must say there's not much of a comparison.

Perhaps you could see the beach we have here in the dome. Even at night, it's lovely.

How fascinating. There's never been need for such a thing where I'm from, but I'm nothing if not constantly impressed by human ingenuity.

That sounds lovely, my dear. In fact even the sun here does not seem to be affecting me as it usually does.

Perhaps it's because the sun is artificial. We're far too deep under the ocean to have true sunlight. I imagine it would be nice to walk in the light without discomfort.

It is indeed. I've seen more of it lately than I used to; my daughter is powerful enough to negate most of what it does to me, but it's still a very welcome sight.

What a kind daughter you have, though I understand her feelings. If I had the ability, I would have done anything to help my own father. Do you have other children?

Yes, my son Mephis has been dead in Hell with me for a very long time, and two others, Daemon and Lucivar who are still alive. [And two other dead sons who had never made it to Hell, but he did not feel like having that conversation.] My daughter Jaenelle is around your age, and I have a grandson as well. [If he had a wallet full of photos he would clearly have dragged it out already.]

That sounds like a lovely family. I'm a bit envious; I always wished to have a large family. But it was only my father and I, and now I'm the last one.

I'm so sorry to hear that, sweetheart. Loosing family is unimaginable, and I've never really found the right words to offer up some comfort after it, even after all this time.

The words you offered are lovely, and more than enough. [For Lacus, it really is the thought that counts.]

If you'll forgive my saying so, I wouldn't have expected the High Lord of Hell to be such a kind person. It's a surprise, and a very pleasant one. I suppose the stories in my world are very inaccurate.

Thank you, my dear, its very kind of you to say. In my experience it's an occupation that requires a great deal of patience; death is never easy, and it can be a hard transition to make, especially without someone to help. But I imagine the stories you've heard may be unfortunately accurate. I've done more than my share of monstrous things, and I do punish those who truly deserve it.

I've done my share of difficult as well, and punished a few who deserved it, of necessity. It is not a few singular acts that define a person, but what they learn from them. And it seems you've come out of your experiences with wisdom and compassion.
