[Voice// Video | Open!]
[The feed begins as voice, a man’s concerned but controlled voice making an official-sounding request:] Enterprise, come in. This Lieutenant Commander Geo--

[A brief moment of silence as the feed switches to video, and it becomes obvious why Geordi is having trouble working the device. His eyes, without iris or pupil, clearly mark him as blind.] Any Federation vessel? [A pause.] Computer? Computer, respond.

[He sighs, but doesn’t look surprised. A slight scoff, as if he’s somehow amused while also being irritated.] Figures. How do I switch frequencies on this thing? They could’ve at least left me with my combadge. But alright, let’s try... [He fiddles with the comm buttons and the feed swaps back to voice.]

Hello? Does anyone copy? I could use a little help here, and I’m getting used to the idea of not being picky.

((OOC: Action open to anyone who wants to find a blind man meandering around the beach!))

[Mal takes hold of Geordi's hand for a hand shake and drops it, but stays pretty close, unsure what exactly he's to do.]

Well, yer on the beach now. D'you have friends here? Or I could help you find lodgin's...?

[Blind people tend to not survive long where he's from. Definitely not on a spaceship. He doesn't deal with them very often.]

As it turns out, I do. My friend Data and my Captain both got here a while ago, it sounds like. But hey, I appreciate the offer, because I easily could have been on my own, here.

[He's really like to glance around, see what there is to see, but until he and Data figure out another VISOR or a replacement he's going to have to rely on others.]

But if there's anything you can tell me about this place, I'd be better off than I am now.

Righ'

Well, best I can figure, we're underwater somewhere. Bit disconcertin' when I been livin' in the sky fer so long.

Prison is divided into six sectors. This here is sector 1. It has the beach. With an ocean. I stay away from here and sector 2 mostly. Pretty happy in sector 3 which is most like home for me.

Stay away? Why, what's wrong with sectors one and two? [He's not exactly alarmed, but curious. If he's going to be blind for a while, best that he know as much as possible.]

Don't much care for beaches or too much schoolin'. Others seem to like it fine though. Supposedly beaches is relaxin'.

Depends on the beach, I'd say. I've been to some planets where the seashore isn't exactly a paradise. [Which is to say, to each their own.] What's in Sector three that agrees with you?

Just... feels like life back in my time an' place. Ain't a ship, but the food and the... architecture. It's what I see when planetside.

I gotcha. It's always nice to see a little bit of home. [Which is why the holodecks are so popular.]

I hope one day soon I get to see what you mean.

Well, sort of. I have a device that interprets electromagnetic waves into implants in my brain. I don't see like I'm guessing you do, but it works for me.

I didn't have it on when I was taken. I guess it's on to Plan B.

What's plan B then?

[Geordi grins easily. He's pretty used to ad libbing.] Figuring out how to get a hold of my VISOR or make a substitute. And to do that, I'll need some help finding out what's around that's useful.

[Mal's extremely interested now. People who know technology are extremely useful in his mind.]

A little over a thousand, if you include the civilians and families. It's a galaxy-class ship.

[Mal gives the man an ascertaining look. Most craft weren't that big, or labeled galaxy-class.]

You Alliance?

Alliance? [Being that this place is chock full of other dimensions, according to Data, he's not surprised to have never heard of it.] No. I belong to the United Federation of Planets. I'm not sure what the Alliance is, but I'm guessing that's because it doesn't exist in my universe, at least not the way you're familiar with it.

United Federation of Planets?

[Sounds like the Alliance.]

An' what are they like?

Well... it's a group of societies and planets that cooperate together in with a central government order to explore the universe and protect people. [Idealized? Just a little, but the Federation is pretty We Are the World Universe.]

Impose them laws on all other societies whether they want 'em or not?

[It sounds exactly like the Alliance. The Alliance in a brochure about how good they are. How wonderful life will be under Unification. Course it don't talk about the rest of it. The experimenting on people. The content control. The rest that comes with Unification.]

Not at all. [He doesn't seem at all offended at the assumption; it's not as though all societies are so obliging.] We follow the Prime Directive, which says that our first priority is non-interference. Even if it's well-intentioned interference. It's the job of a Starfleet officer to follow the Prime Directive even at the cost of their life and the lives of their shipmates. So not only do we not impose laws on other societies, we can't even approach them unless we're invited.

[They take this extremely seriously. Granted there are grey areas, but they do their very best to uphold it.]

An' when you Unified? Tha' was all done by obligin' planets? No fights?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]visualizing
2013-09-03 02:02 pm UTC (link)
There were only four at the beginning, and no, there weren't any fights. At least not the imperialistic kind. It's not all sunshine and roses, but we're fortunate that our first off-Earth contact were the Vulcans, and they taught us about our responsibilities if we were going to branch out into the universe. We have our disagreements, but the Federation is strict about people who violate our principles.

...I take it that where you come from, the government isn't very trustworthy.

Unification ain't worth anythin' less'n yer in the central core an have money. Otherwise yer jus' someone fer the Alliance to wipe their feet on. Only place a man's free is the black.
