Class 003 : Day 224 : Werewolves
[Sam is a little nervous about today's class. The first two were easy enough. As far as he can tell there are no "real" ghosts in the prison and definitely no wendigos. Werewolves on the other hand? There's definitely one and he considers him a friend. He'd be lying if he said he didn't also consider him a threat. After all it wasn't that long ago he hurt Martha and maybe others when the prison played with their emotions. It wasn't Oz's fault, but it happened and it could happen again. It was something that resonated with him considering the way things ended with the subject of his case study.

If the teacher looks a little more affected by this particular lesson than he was by the first two, it's because he is. It's personal, but the fact that it can be a threat here makes it all the more important to get the information out there.]

Today's subject is werewolves. Before we start, I just want to remind everyone of the basics. I'm providing information researched in my world. It may or may not apply to any other werewolves you meet at home or here.

Overview : Werewolves

Werewolves are formerly human and still live as humans most of the time except during full moons when they transform. Where I'm from that means fangs, claws, and yellow eyes, but I know in some places they look more like wolves.

They change because at some point they were bitten by another werewolf and got infected. They might not even know they were changed. It's possible for them to transform, kill and change back without understanding what's happening to them or having memories of it.

When they're in wolf form their thinking becomes very basic and animalistic. Tehy want to hunt and kill. It could be opportunity or a drive from their subconscious that directs them where to attack. They're stronger, faster, and more agile. They've also got enhanced senses like a wolf.

[ WEREWOLVES ]

Case Study : Madison

We had a case in San Francisco. There was a rash of violent deaths and all signs were pointing to a werewolf. We met up with a woman named Madison. Her boss had just been killed and we suspected her ex-boyfriend. It turned out we needed to be protecting him from her. She had been infected by a neighbor, and had no idea she was killing people who had been problems for her. She even killed a police officer who had tried to stop her.

There was a theory that killing the sire would cure the victim from their lycanthropy, [He's definitely somber here.] but we managed to prove that wrong. After her sire died she spent one night in her human form and the next as a wolf. There's no known cure. [And he's not finishing the story of what happened to her next.]

[ MADISON ][ HEART ]

Practical : Prevention and defense

The most important thing about werewolves is to never let them bite you. It's easier said than done, but it's important.

[He takes a deep breath.] Before I go into this next part I just want to remind everyone we are talking about a person—someone who was born human and lives more days as a human than a beast. Someone not in control of their actions, but still deadly to all those around them. [The most serious of faces, because he does not take this lightly.]

They are strong and hard to kill in wolf form. The most effective way to do it is with silver. It could be a silver dagger or bullet. It just needs to penetrate the heart, but bullets are better because it's a distance shot—less risk to you. It's said silver is related to the moon. That might be part of why it works.

[And a nod to Buffy's question last time, but without the literal nodding.] Dismemberment is also...effective. If they are killed in werewolf form they'll revert back to human when they die. [And on that note...]

[ SILVER ]

Questions & Discussion
That's all I have, so, let me know your thoughts.

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail and he definitely avoided anything after his season 5 canon point like "vamptonite", or super personal like sleeping with Madison, but feel free to bring more into it.)

[Eric is lounging very casually in the back of the class room, legs stretched out in front of him. He appears amused more than interested in the topic at hand. He would like to think he knows a great deal about the werewolves at home, but it doesn't hurt to find more about werewolves from other worlds. One never knows where one will find oneself in this place. He's entirely approachable so come say hi, or trip over him, or you know, whatever.]

[M'gann had decided to start taking some of these classes, both because she was fascinated and also because it could possibly be useful later so she walks into the room, heading to the back for the moment. She finds an open seat and sits down. Having gotten here early she turns to her neighbor]

[ Y'know, he was starting to finally get used to the supernatural population but that sure doesn't stop him from being overly amused at the idea of a vampire taking a paranormal class. Yes yes, criminology in a dome full of criminals. The irony hasn't gone by him, but there's still a stifled burst of amusement when he spots Eric. ]

[ Eric smirks and nods in Reid's direction before getting up to amble over to say hello. He tosses himself down in a chair near Reid with a grace that's utterly inhuman and entirely casual.]

I decided to go in for a different sort of entertainment today.

[ There's something simultaneously creepy and comforting about that sort of body control. Makes him think of Morgan, but damn if he can explain why. ]

To be honest, I never expected to see you here.

[ Eric wouldn't be able to explain why either, but there are humans who can and do gain a large measure of body control and can mimic the grace that comes naturally to vampires.

He shrugs at Reid's observation.]

Werewolves are something of a normal in my world. I was curious to see how much the residents here 'know'.

[ He says it with a smirk as if he expects them to be 'wrong', but then he is also a bit curious about whether werewolves are the same in all dimensions. He knows that vampires aren't. ]

That depends on who's werewolves he's discussing. So far, he's got mine all wrong.

[ He's not a werewolf and he feels no particular affection for any of the werewolves he does know, so he's fine with talking about differences, weaknesses and the like.]

However, I understand that there are different strains of werewolves in different worlds.

Just like with vampires then, from what I've gathered. [ Purely theoretical, as far as he knows. There's been a lot of vampire talk in criminology class. ]

Of course. [ He shifts in his seat a little. It's not quite that simple. ] Actually, I've been getting a lot of questions about vampires in the criminology class I'm teaching. Like whether or not they should be equated with serial killers.

[ Eric ponders that a moment. It's not that he's pondering the answer so much as whether he should answer it or not. Her decides the answer is vague enough that it's safe to give. ]

That depends, as it does in humans, on the vampire. I suppose it would also depend on how you were defining serial killer. I assume your definition would be more specific than a body count.

It is — there are several factors to consider, like time frame and spread... motivation, to a certain degree. That seem to be the divider, really. Some people claim that vampires can be equated with serial killers just as little as a human who eats meat can be called a killer. That, uh... the lack of choice in diet means the morality of it isn't an issue.

Hmmm I think some people hold a very optimistic view of vampires. Perhaps it is different in some worlds, but we don't have to kill to feed. After all, you've recovered nicely. [ he glances at Reid's neck then back up to the man's face. ]

There are some that kill simply for the joy of it. Others haven't mastered the art of glamoring a human and still others that lose control for various reasons.

[ Pondering. Why didn't he ask this earlier? ] So you're saying there isn't much of a difference at all? That a vampire could be held to the same standards as a human, when it comes to serial killer behavior?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Could be held to the same standards as a human by the Vampire Authority, not by human law.

I suppose with time there could be a cooperative relationship. It's bad PR for us to kill as well.

Well... the same criteria then. I mean, should we differentiate between vampiric and human behavior? Or is it more a matter of taking other aspects into account?

[ she's told her plenty. from the effects of vampire blood and the bonds they can forge to the flying and weird fangs.

(the last of which elena did... actually... lick experience personally that one time so anyway -- ) she steps the remaining steps into the aisle. mostly she's thinking about those differences.
] Sookie told me vampires from your world are much older than mine. [ she says this as she's sitting a seat away from him. she's curious about it. about their origins.

[ The mention of Godric brings a broody, nostalgic sort of cast to Eric's expression. Godric is a wound that will never not hurt. He nods a bit in confirmation then moves onto her question. ]

Have you ever heard the story of Lilith? There's a biblical version going around.
