Class 003 : Day 224 : Werewolves
[Sam is a little nervous about today's class. The first two were easy enough. As far as he can tell there are no "real" ghosts in the prison and definitely no wendigos. Werewolves on the other hand? There's definitely one and he considers him a friend. He'd be lying if he said he didn't also consider him a threat. After all it wasn't that long ago he hurt Martha and maybe others when the prison played with their emotions. It wasn't Oz's fault, but it happened and it could happen again. It was something that resonated with him considering the way things ended with the subject of his case study.

If the teacher looks a little more affected by this particular lesson than he was by the first two, it's because he is. It's personal, but the fact that it can be a threat here makes it all the more important to get the information out there.]

Today's subject is werewolves. Before we start, I just want to remind everyone of the basics. I'm providing information researched in my world. It may or may not apply to any other werewolves you meet at home or here.

Overview : Werewolves

Werewolves are formerly human and still live as humans most of the time except during full moons when they transform. Where I'm from that means fangs, claws, and yellow eyes, but I know in some places they look more like wolves.

They change because at some point they were bitten by another werewolf and got infected. They might not even know they were changed. It's possible for them to transform, kill and change back without understanding what's happening to them or having memories of it.

When they're in wolf form their thinking becomes very basic and animalistic. Tehy want to hunt and kill. It could be opportunity or a drive from their subconscious that directs them where to attack. They're stronger, faster, and more agile. They've also got enhanced senses like a wolf.

[ WEREWOLVES ]

Case Study : Madison

We had a case in San Francisco. There was a rash of violent deaths and all signs were pointing to a werewolf. We met up with a woman named Madison. Her boss had just been killed and we suspected her ex-boyfriend. It turned out we needed to be protecting him from her. She had been infected by a neighbor, and had no idea she was killing people who had been problems for her. She even killed a police officer who had tried to stop her.

There was a theory that killing the sire would cure the victim from their lycanthropy, [He's definitely somber here.] but we managed to prove that wrong. After her sire died she spent one night in her human form and the next as a wolf. There's no known cure. [And he's not finishing the story of what happened to her next.]

[ MADISON ][ HEART ]

Practical : Prevention and defense

The most important thing about werewolves is to never let them bite you. It's easier said than done, but it's important.

[He takes a deep breath.] Before I go into this next part I just want to remind everyone we are talking about a person—someone who was born human and lives more days as a human than a beast. Someone not in control of their actions, but still deadly to all those around them. [The most serious of faces, because he does not take this lightly.]

They are strong and hard to kill in wolf form. The most effective way to do it is with silver. It could be a silver dagger or bullet. It just needs to penetrate the heart, but bullets are better because it's a distance shot—less risk to you. It's said silver is related to the moon. That might be part of why it works.

[And a nod to Buffy's question last time, but without the literal nodding.] Dismemberment is also...effective. If they are killed in werewolf form they'll revert back to human when they die. [And on that note...]

[ SILVER ]

Questions & Discussion
That's all I have, so, let me know your thoughts.

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail and he definitely avoided anything after his season 5 canon point like "vamptonite", or super personal like sleeping with Madison, but feel free to bring more into it.)

[Dawn raises her hand and waits for Sam to acknowledge her. Then she stands up when she speaks. This is one topic she knows well. And when she speaks it isn't just to Sam. It's to the whole class.]

I just wanna add that you don't have to be all kill kill kill with all werewolves. If you have the opportunity, sometimes you can talk them into locking themselves up on a full moon. And if they get out, there are tranquilizers that work. Buffy uses one with... some... random... werewolves.

Also, another tactic is ew bunnies. Like... give the wolf something to snack on while you get away to get the tranquilizer. Or if you don't have a tranq, you can use the opportunity to sneak around behind him, bash him in the head or choke him until he passes out.

[This next brilliant idea just comes to her as she's talking.] Oh! Or you could get some ambien or something similar and put it in some raw groud beef. Goodnight wolf. Sweet dreams. See you in the morning when you can form words...

[Awkward... awkward... she sits back down.]

Ambien? [Sam wants to be hopeful in things, but even for him the ew bunnies and OTC sleep aid approach gets a thoughtful kind of sad look. It is a little hard to think about all the possibilities knowing what kind of path he took before.] I guess that would be something to try. Along with a cage.

[Dawn takes that sad thoughtful look as his needing a little encouragement in the other options area rather than what it probably actually means.] Oh yeah, there are all kind of other options aside from a dead one. I mean, they're human most of the time and usually it isn't their fault they were bitten. They should be given options, you know? Just like not all demons or vampires are bad. All werewolves aren't bad either.

This is something I've -- my sister has learned over time though. [Hello Dawn, ever living vicariously through her sister. But to be fair, she really had learned the same lessons about all things supernatural as Buffy had learned them.] But it's true. Some supernatural things just wanna exist as peacefully as they can in our world rather than in some hell dimension. Ya know?

[He nods slowly.] You're right. They deserve options. [Madison had an option. At least as far as Sam was concerned she did. He didn't know what kind of option it would be, but something with life attached to it. Some way of living and not killing. Maybe it would be from the other side of a cage. His mind never fully formed an answer before she exercised her option. She chose death over the constant threat of changing into a monster.]

But when they are in werewolf form what they do isn't peaceful, and you have to know what you're doing. The best defense is knowledge. [And silver bullets don't hurt.]

Since I've been all hi, I'm Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with werewolves, I'm going to weigh in seconding Dawn here on the lock up method and sure, not every person wants to walk willingly into a cage, but not every alcoholic or druggie walks into rehab voluntarily. I'm totally okay with the tranq, drug and choke out method of rehab...or caging. Not so much with the killing someone that's a person most of the time method of rehab. And hey, I know that's not practical for everyone, but I"m here. Put me on speed dial. And back home, you could institute a full moon curfew. You know, stay in, watch a movie, pop some popcorn. Don't call for pizza. Avoid the whole issue the way you avoid the cranky co-worker a few days of the week.

[She's going to pause here to take a breath.]

So. Yeah. That's my take on it?

[Eric is there mostly because he's curious what others believe about werewolves, and because he's had a great deal of experience with the wolves in his world. Many of his employees are werewolves. He keeps to the back of the class, standing up when he's got a question.]

So werewolves can't change at will?

[Well, they can in his world, but he's curious what Sam knows about them.]

No, we don't think so. Not in my world at least. I have heard that there are techniques for control for other types. [Heard from Oz that is. And if he was canon updated he'd have a different answer for his world.]

Unless you know differently? [He'll be taking every opportunity to learn.]

[ eric shrugs a little.]

Let's just say I wouldn't push the werewolves I know unless you're willing to deal with their more dangerous half.

[And Martha wants to weigh in without freaking anyone out too much.]

In my experience, they aren't super good at maneuvering around obstacles. So, get inside and throw things behind you. It could be enough to save your life.

They can be cocky too. Of course they are strong and they can easily hurt you. But take advantage of any moment they give you to kick and run.

Also, Sam's werewolves are supernatural. In my world, there is evidence of an alien that bonds with humans to create a werewolf.

[It's a little uncomfortable knowing her experience is likely from Oz rather than these alien hybrids she's speaking of, but he is curious to know more about them as long as they're on the topic and after all, what isn't awkward about this class?]

What kind of traits do the alien werewolves have? [Never thought he'd be asking that!]

Big and wolflike? I never saw it in human form and our research is sketchy at best. I didn't even know it was alien until after I'd parted ways with my partner. He's the one who would know.

[Martha is purposefully misleading people to think her werewolf attack happened before Marina. Her stitches are coming off soon, and hopefully she can pass of the scars as older than they actually are. Some cream will help. And she doesn't know anything about the alien werewolves. Ianto brought it up while he stitched her back and arm.]

If he ever ends up back in here, I'll let you know Sam. My partner I mean. Not the wolf.

[Or she'll talk to Jack and see if he knows anything about the werewolf case in Torchwood.]

[ the topic kind of gives elena a few pauses (there's tyler, her friend, who didn't ask for this) - and it's clear both buffy and dawn concur with some of what elena feels. it's important to know how to kill anything that can hurt or kill you; she more than understands that and why sam would include it in the lesson.

it's just as important to know your other options -

she's also not deaf or blind to sam's quiet sensitivity during and after the lesson, either.

she's quiet most of it, but raises her hand shortly after buffy and dawn to add her thoughts.
]

You should keep all options under consideration if you're facing a werewolf, or facing anyone. They're people. [ she looks sam's way with reassurance in her gaze. ] The most important part is to understand. That's why we're here.

[And let's not forget, everyone knows how to kill a human. Many, many, many ways to kill a human. It doesn't mean we all go around doing it just because we have the information.]

Yes. [So many interjections this time. It's a huge change from the first two classes. No wendigo fans, but then that's something he can also relate to.] Thank you. Learning is the point.
