[ VIDEO; LOCKED TO THE DEFENSE FORCE ]

Can I have your attention, please? I have a few announcements to make.

First of all, if you haven't already heard Derek Morgan is no longer with us. I'll be stepping in as temporary leader for the Investigative Team until a new leader can be elected — if you're interested in the position, come talk to me or Kitty.

Second, all of you who were assigned to the Investigative Team during our stay in Squall are highly encouraged to file out reports regarding our time there. Anything and everything you can think of, even the most insignificant of details can turn out to be of great use later on.

Data, it'd be great if you could come see me whenever it's convenient.

I'll be at the Defense Quarters HQ all afternoon if any of you need any help or have questions. That's all for now.

[ ACTION; OPEN TO ALL ]

[ True to his word, Reid will be at the Defense Force headquarters all afternoon, working away on his own Squall-related intel and pondering how to best report the rather startling discovery they might've stumbled upon.

Later in the evening he can be found in the education center music room, playing a rather familiar piece followed by the second movement of Beethoven No 8 sonata, Pathetique. A little slow and full of stumbles, but the boy tries. ]

All too well. [She says with a little sigh, knowing what he's talking about to the T. Sleep and her rarely get along either.]

I think I'm going to push code around on the wiki, start building up that supernatural category as a matter o' fact. Sleep is for the weak. [Meaning it's being a bitch tonight and she's just going to work 'till she falls over too.]

[ Too big of a work load, crazy hours, catnaps on the plane, a heavy intake of caffeine, persistant and frequent nightmares. There are plenty of reasons not to sleep and he's all too happy that he's gotten a few positive ones lately. ]

Sounds like as good a place to start as any... [ Safer, in any case. Which brings us to... ] How are you holding up?

Mm, hanging in there. [She shrugs, still refusing to let herself be too caught up in freaking out over things.]

I requested my clothes from the other dome yesterday, got 'em today. Also asked about our tentacled friend, who was "neutralized" [air quotes] and assured similar attacks won't be possible in the future.

Wouldn't surprise me if they didn't think this one was possible either. [ Seeing as he doubts their transfer was part of the plans. ]

Why did you ask for your clothes?

... I dunno. I guess I just wanted to see if they were the same, y'know?

[But as a creator herself of technology that recreates life-like features and fools the brain, she just ends up shrugging.] Plus I did spend a killer amount of time working on 'em.

Were they? The same, I mean. [ There were some discrepancies... ]

... I think so. I might ask Garcia, she was with me when we dyed 'em.

It wouldn't be hard to replicate, realistically. I could make myself believe I have the same things with the Animus' tech, it fools the brain easily enough into filling gaps on its own. [Not to be a downer, but technology is a colossal mindfuck, easy.]

You know, I never really believed virtual reality could be made realistic enough to completely fool the human brain but the fact that you know how similar tech works... it makes it possible. It's just a matter of proving it.

I should show you the Animus sometime. Baby and the VR machine Lacus and I made here are different in their own ways, but they use a lot of the same sensory activation.

[...] You, me and Garcia should crack heads over it sometime.

[ God, that fills him with a greater sense of hope than he expected. ] That would be a good place to start, wouldn't it? I mean, it's tricking the brain so if we figure out the trick...

[ Waiting for her to either agree or shoot down the thought. ]

[She laughs, lightly, but it's not really humorous.] Essentially, yeah.

If we follow this... Matrix theory here, we're represented by data right now. Everything is simulated, fed back to us wherever we really are-- that other dome. [Hand gestures!] What we'd have to do is somehow interfere with that. I don't know how, corrupting it might just screw us over, but hacking myself? C'mon, how is that not the most amazing sounding challenge ever?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thisiscalm
2013-06-30 07:47 pm UTC (link)
Well, going by that theory... shouldn't there be a way to test it? I mean, if we really are pure data right now — an artificially created existence that is lead back into our brains as real events — couldn't we manipulate that somehow? For example... do we still need to eat? Sleep?

[She just nods.] That's really the question...

On one hand, we shouldn't have to-- but the brain's a really complex thing. If it thinks its starving, it could have adverse effects on our real bodies. Then again, breaking past that barrier might squash that theory.

[...] In a completely opposite example, my teammate Desmond was using the Animus pretty regularly to live through his ancestor's life. It could play through days in a matter of hours, but to him he was-- y'know, eating and sleeping regularly? Or so he thought. But we still had to pull him out and remind him to actually eat and take a break. So I wouldn't put it past the brain to be easily fooled, it's just... fixing that.

[ More nodding on his end. ] Just taking things like placebo drugs or psychosomatic illnesses into account, it's easy to see how our brains could be tricked in such a way that it has a physical effect.

Not to mention psychotic breaks or episodes that can be perceived as so real that the person experiencing them can't even tell what's happening until after it's over... if even that — there's a condition called Capgras syndrome where the individual suffering from it is convinced that everyone they know has been replaced by identical impostors. Their brain won't allow them to recognize their loved ones for who they are anymore.

These things are generally treated by anti-psychotic medicine and therapy so... maybe by combining these two scenarios, we'll be able to find a way to break it?

[She knows all about psychotic episodes thanks to Animus technology, but not firsthand. So she nods, scratching her cheek while thinking it over.

After a minute, she snorts.]
We're basically trying to become The One? [Matrix reference, get.]

I just hate how this candybar of suck just has an extra wrapper, in terms of potentially planning to get out of this place. But I gotta give it to 'em, they really... put a tough security measure in place. Like one of those dreams where as far as you go, you keep waking up where you started.

At least now we know why we haven't had much success... [ Small comforts. ] With more data we can take a different approach, one they may not have predicted that we'd take? I mean, yeah they do have a tough security measure in place but that doesn't mean there isn't a way around it.

[ So set on this now. Could be dangerous. ]

We'll crack it in time. I mean, we know it's possible since Senti did it. But he knew the ins and outs as a former warden, I'm kicking myself for not asking more about it. Granted, he probably wouldn't have shared for obvious reasons.

... I kind of wonder where he went. [Really went.]

I did at first. [But then she shrugs.]

For all I know he could be, but it's just kind of funny. The Warden that wasn't supposed to be Warden anymore gets 'promoted' by the same group that jailed him? I just hope he... wasn't dismantled or anything terrible.

It doesn't make sense, does it? And we have to remember that this took place not long after the coup, relatively speaking.

Unless this was their goal all along, I don't see how that would lead to a promotion.

It's a bit tricky too, they replaced one warden with two-- so you can assume any further attempts at coups are going to be twice as hard to pull off.

Smart, but... frustrating.

Seems like they learned from past mistakes... you have to give them that much. Not that we really could've relied on Sentience's tactics anyway. [ Lacking the necessary keys. ]

What's your take on the wardens, anyway? Have you talked to both of them?

I hate saying this, but I kinda like 'em. [But she lifts her hand after a beat, clearly she doesn't like them enough.]

Tech standpoint, it's an amazing thing-- independent, responsive, self-thinking AI. Kinda had this conversation yesterday, actually. [With Smith, funnily enough.] They have distinct personalities but it's almost like their an experiment, really. Microsoft Sam and his snarky wife overlooking us, y'know?

[ Nodding. It's good to get this kind of input. He's tried to work out the patterns but he's not a techie. ] And compared to Acumen and Sentience?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]needmymp3
2013-07-15 08:49 pm UTC (link)
... Different. [She cocks her head to the side.]

I don't know, I got the vibe back there that they were more warden-like, in construct. Versus now where they seem more defined, self-individualized. From what I grasped there was something special about Sentience though, possibly [fingerquotes] "bad" in the scheme of things-- from his creator's view, whoever they were. I mean, if you jail your own AI, something's up.

[Shrugging.] It's no coincidence that just as he gets back in the hot seat he's ejected again, maybe for being too... humanized? Listening to us too much? Makes you kind of steamed, if you think about it. He showed us too much. Maybe he would've, in time, thought about letting us go. Acumen on the other hand was just an asshole, default authority figure. Perhaps how Sentience was supposed to be, flawless in terms of identifying with people?

I'm not sure really how to compare 'em, I think we've sunk farther down from the possibility of having any say or power over our surroundings though. Unless we can somehow make Veri stop mocking half the inmates, they're not really going to gel. And Consci, by design, lacks even more... [gesture] y'know?
