Day 219 [video-->Action] Merlotte's Mingle - Open to All!
[What better way to kick off a mingle than to broadcast the invitation to the entire dome?]

Hey ya'll. I know it's kinda outta place t'say Welcome to Marina cause no one really wants t'be here, but it ain't all bad. In any case, I've got a bar an grill here in Sector 4 called Merlotte's, figure th' new arrivals may want to come on down and have a drink or two after a trip like that.

Anyone's welcome of course, we're open from mornin' to night. Come on in an' have a bite to eat or somethin' to ease your troubles.

((ooc: This is an open mingle. Feel free to thread everywhere with anyone. As always, before threadjacking make sure it's okay by the player but otherwise have fun! Sam is available to chat with either by Video or in person and his thread is right Here. There is a full menu of down-home diner/grill sort of foods, so hamburgers, french fries, salads, soups, breakfast items or whatever other comfort food you can think of and a few other things from other worlds. There is a full bar, wine, liquor, beer and even blood or synthetic blood. He also has a pool table and there's plenty of room in booths or tables to play cards or whatever else.))

Perhaps you could tell me about it sometime? [ she'd love to hear about it. ]

London was my home for a long time, but I've been to quite a few places. Rome, Paris, Berlin... even Normandy, France. [ yes, she was there during the second world war, for the record. ] I do miss it at times. Europe is a wonderful place to be.

Of course, yeah. I can do that.

[ rose might leave the full details out though. at least for now. ]

Least you can say that you have been to all those places. A lot of people haven't. [ a pause. ] But you're settled in the States now. What line of work were you in back home, Helen?

[ she won't pressure for details, more than aware of what it's like to hold a deep secret that's best kept somewhere dark and hidden, but she is interested in hearing about the town, as much as she can learn anyway. ]

Indeed. [ people like her own daughter, only allowed to see rome after she and john saved helen from nikola's little scheme. her expression falters ever so slightly at the thought of ashley, but it's gone so quickly as to have not been there in the first place. this isn't the time to think about that. ]

I have been since the late 1940's. [ so about that age thing. she looks younger than seventy, doesn't she? ] I'm a conservationist, protector of endangered species and the like. [ ...it counts. few will be able to see her lie for what it is. ]

[ rose is used to the strange and finding out that Helen has been doing her work for a while and yet looks a lot younger isn't too weird. ]

A noble cause indeed. Not everyone would be so inclined to do a job like that. [ consider her suitably impressed. ] I suppose my next question is how do you look so young? What's your secret?

[ she laughs a little but her question is genuine. ]

It keeps me occupied, at the very least, though I could do without having to play political agent. [ really, she hates politics. it's a wonder she willingly deals with politicians at all.

she does, however, give rose a bit of a smirk at that question. ]
Wouldn't be much of a secret if I told everyone, now would it? [ there is something, yes, a secret she holds, but as this is her first day here, she's not really inclined to say much about personal things like that. there's time in the future, though. perhaps then. ]

No, I suppose it wouldn't. [ she likes Helen already. but of course Rose was still interested in how she managed to look so young-perhaps she was a vampire like herself or she had found the answer to immortality. ]

But you're new and I shouldn't really pester you with questions. You can ask me about the prison though if you like. Unless you'd rather just sit and relax with a drink. That's good too.

[ helen can tell they're going to get along just fine. ]

By all means, ask away. I don't mind people asking questions as long as they don't mind that I might not answer everything.

[ as far as the prison goes, though. hmmm ]

I suppose the eternal question of "how do we get home" can be answered with a quick "they don't want us to."

[ she's teasing and the smile shows it. ]

Selective with your answers. Interesting.

[Rose has done that before.]

Glad we've got that cleared up then. It's probably the most frequently asked question that the newbies have.

[she smiles in return, realising what Helen was doing.]

As far as prisons go, it's not too bad. I mean, they have a few bars and a beach.

Where would a girl be without her secrets?

[ her smile suggests she's teasing, but she has a point. she's fully expecting rose to be hiding something, as well, but she's not about to go prying into someone else's life, not when she's so new still. ]

I can imagine so. Also tiring to answer time and again.

[ it's good to see a healthy sense of humor in a place like this. ]

Indeed. I saw the beach on my arrival. Had the softest landing I thought possible, except for inadvertently mixing sand with my injuries.

[Rose winces. That would hurt.]

That was unfortunate.

[She knows she did injure herself because she smelled the blood but Rose had been playing dumb on purpose. Her gaze falls on Helen's arms before it moves to her neck-definite signs that she had been cut.]

I see that you went and got them seen to. The medical facilities are pretty good as far as facilities like that go. I shudder to even ask what happened to you.

I was fortunate enough to have a friend of mine who met me shortly after. He's proficient enough with a med kit to clean up what I couldn't reach.

[ she's watching rose's gaze, noting it but not bringing attention to anything. she doesn't blame rose for noticing and is actually more impressed, preferring observant people to those who just sit around. ]

I've heard the hospital is run by a subset of the wardens. If it's all the same to anyone else, I'd rather use my own medical knowledge first. Saves time and energy. [ she's a medical doctor. that saves a lot of time. hence her expertly-wrapped wrists. ]

[The medical facility was good enough to bring Rose back from the brink of death so they should be able to take care of a few cuts. But some people mightn't feel comfortable with robots looking after their medical needs.]

Fair enough. If you feel better doing it yourself then that's your prerogative. Some of the prisoners might feel better knowing that there's a human doctor around; provided you would be willing to help them if they needed it of course.

That's actually what I was hoping to do. I'd like to see if I can't open a clinic of sorts, for those, like myself, who are more comfortable with a human doctor. At any rate, it'll keep me occupied.

You'll probably earn yourself some rehabilitation points while you're at it too. They can come in pretty handy on occasion. It's certainly something worthwhile to look into while you are here.

If anything, it will help to keep you busy. I've always thought that keeping yourself occupied is a good way to take your mind off the fact that you're in prison.

I suppose it would do that, wouldn't it? [ helen offers an amused smirk. ] That settles it, then. I'll look into it in a day or so, when I've gotten a better feel for this location.

[ she's not much of one for vocal gratitude, but the smile she offers more than covers it. ]

Definitely wait a day or two before doing anything about it. I took some time to settle in here first, then I went exploring.

[Rose gives her a soft smile in return, pleased that she may have helped her in some way.]

I wish you luck regardless.

I'd rather not jump into anything head first. That would certainly lead to disaster.

[ it's something that she's made at least a good acquaintance here. ]

Speaking with you has been most informative. I do hope we'll have the chance to talk more in the future.

I daresay that we will run into each other at some point. But if you really want to make sure that we do, then we can pre-arrange a meet up somewhere. There's a great coffee shop here.

In a place like this, I would be surprised if we don't. [ she inclines her head just enough to show both gratitude and respect. rose has made a wonderful impression on her. ] Once I've settled in more, I would certainly like that, though I'll admit, I'm a tea-drinker. For some that may be a deal-breaker, but I think, just this once, I might be able to lift my ban on existing in the same room as a pot of coffee.

[ she's completely teasing with this. while she does believe adamantly that tea is much more civilized than coffee, she's dealt with it around her since she had ashley. and will drinks it anyway, so it's not like her house has ever really been coffee-free. ]

Hey, I've got nothing against tea drinkers. But I'm glad you're willing to brave the horror of having to be near coffee.

[Rose can just as easily tease in return, pleased that Helen can have a sense of humour about it; some people she had encountered here wouldn't be so laid back.]

I like tea well enough but it doesn't give me the buzz that coffee does. Starts me off for the rest of the day, you know? [That, and a bag of blood but it's information she is keeping to herself.]

Just send me a message when you feel up to meeting and I'll be there.

[ her lips twitch in a smirk. as long as she doesn't have to pretend to like it, she thinks she can live with it around. ]

As long as I'm not expected to drink it, I think I can survive.

[ that's something will would say... ashley had often made that comment before she--

helen's lips twitch again before she manages to push that thought away. ]

You aren't the first person to ever tell me that. Think I'll stick with my tea. The last thing I need is to have my restless nature enhanced.

[ ask nikola. he certainly would comment on that. ]

Will do. Count on it.

Restless nature? If you don't mind me saying you seem fairly at ease at the moment.

[Particularly for someone who has just been taken into a prison from their own world and stuck there indefinitely.]

Then I will leave you to get back to your evening, Helen. It was a pleasure meeting you.

[Rather than just turning around and leaving right away, Rose waits for the other woman to speak.]

[ there's a pause at that, one in which helen's gaze moves back to her companion. she gives rose a calculating sort of look for a brief moment before she answers. ]

Looks can be deceiving. [ she offers it amiably enough, but there's a soft undertone to suggest that whether or not she appears at ease isn't the only thing those words might apply to.

the look is gone in an instant, though, and she smiles in return. ]

A pleasure to meet you, as well. I hope the rest of your evening goes well.
