Day 219 [video-->Action] Merlotte's Mingle - Open to All!
[What better way to kick off a mingle than to broadcast the invitation to the entire dome?]

Hey ya'll. I know it's kinda outta place t'say Welcome to Marina cause no one really wants t'be here, but it ain't all bad. In any case, I've got a bar an grill here in Sector 4 called Merlotte's, figure th' new arrivals may want to come on down and have a drink or two after a trip like that.

Anyone's welcome of course, we're open from mornin' to night. Come on in an' have a bite to eat or somethin' to ease your troubles.

((ooc: This is an open mingle. Feel free to thread everywhere with anyone. As always, before threadjacking make sure it's okay by the player but otherwise have fun! Sam is available to chat with either by Video or in person and his thread is right Here. There is a full menu of down-home diner/grill sort of foods, so hamburgers, french fries, salads, soups, breakfast items or whatever other comfort food you can think of and a few other things from other worlds. There is a full bar, wine, liquor, beer and even blood or synthetic blood. He also has a pool table and there's plenty of room in booths or tables to play cards or whatever else.))

You're new. I'd say welcome but it's prison, it doesn't feel quite the right sentiment. [Not that it feels much like a prison at all, most of the time.]

Merlotte's is a rather popular place. It probably helps that Sam is rather friendly. [Even if she did meet him in an anger management group.]

All the same, the idea is appreciated. [ and really, it is. ]

I can see why it would be. I wouldn't mind spending a little time here myself. [ she takes another sip and then shifts to offer a hand. ] Either way, my manners seem to be a bit lacking these days. Dr. Helen Magnus.

I'm glad.

It's a nice place. There aren't too many options here, but both here and the Blood Shack can be rather enjoyable. [The ones she frequents the most, anyways.]

Rebekah Mikealson. [She takes the woman's hand, shaking it.]

[ she keeps her expression impassive at the sound of the "blood shack," though she's extremely interested in it. so that's where he's getting it. ] In that case, I'll have to come here more often, particularly if the company is this enjoyable. [ she gives rebekah a genuine smile. she's not minding the company at all so far. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Rebekah. [ that's more or less permission for rebekah to call her by her first name. ] I would say I wish it were under better circumstances, but all things considered, it could be a lot worse.

Well, I come here not infrequently so at least it would give us a chance to run into one another again. [She replies, returning the smile with one of her own.]

I agree, Helen. All things considered, it could be worse. [Does she sound convincing? She's trying to. It's been a rough few days, the words feel a little fake on her tongue at the moment.]

I would certainly like that. Perhaps next time we meet, I won't be sporting a healthy coat of red. [ she means the little cuts and bruises scattered around her face and neck.

whether or not helen believes rebekah, her eyes take on a distant look for a moment. it's brief, just as brief as the intense gaze she gives the young woman for a split second before she looks away and takes a sip of her wine. she knows how much worse it could be. they could be under the dictatorship of a bunch of tyrants, people who would rather shoot than ask questions. people like addison or, worse, nazi colonel korba. helen wouldn't put it past anyone to pull something like that, but she'll hope for the best. ]

For instance-- [ and here she pauses, letting her glass lower so she can offer a gentle and genuinely accepting and friendly expression. ] --in another place, we might never have met.

[ she's someone who believes firmly that every meeting has meaning. everything can lead to something else and be useful. helen herself might have difficulty truly making friends these days, as she knows full well that she will most likely outlive them all, but she understands the importance of connections... and if a friendship comes of those, so be it. she'll deal with the repercussions later. ]

One can only hope. Have you checked out the hospitals here? I hear they are quite good at healing people quickly. [Of course her only experience was her own brother going there after she herself stabbed him...but you know, details.

Rebekah's been in worse situations. She's been taken prisoner before, she's been daggered and stuffed into a coffin for ninety years, things can always be worse.

The next part makes Rebekah pause a little.
]

That's a better way to look at things, I suppose.

[Not one she's adapted herself. She's been moping about Quinn being gone but perhaps she should be grateful she got to meet her at all, really.]

[ she hasn't, if only because she trusts her doctoring abilities far more than she trusts a robot or ai. in all honesty, she trusts nikola's doctoring ability more than a robot or ai, as well, and he's the one who patched up her face. ]

I was actually hoping to look into setting up a clinic for those less inclined to trust a robot's capabilities. [ it's said amiably, in a way that may or may not suggest that she's one of those people. ] I'm a doctor, myself, and if I can use what I've spent my life learning, why not at least try?

[ whether or not this meeting turns into something other than decent conversation and a good respite from Helen's first day remains to be seen. regardless, she isn't minding spending her time like this. at least for now. ]

It's a smart idea. I'm sure there are many who would rather put their care into the hands of one of our fellow prisoners than our wardens.

[ The care of a robot is far from comforting, not that Rebekah has needed to be on the receiving end of it yet.]

This place can get boring at times anyways, you might as well find productive ways to use your time.

I know I certainly would.

[ her expression darkens for a brief moment. she doesn't like the idea of their wardens being in charge of something as critical as medical care. something tells her they might not be entirely fair about it. ]

Indeed. Depending on how many people get injured here, it could certainly be a good way to use my time. Perhaps there are others here who might be interested in learning and helping that way.

It doesn't seem uncommon for people to get injured here. Quite a few of our fellow inmates seem rather...volatile, to say the least.

[Herself included, though she obviously doesn't go mentioning that.]

I imagine there are those who'd like to learn though.

Well, that's a little unsettling to hear. I had hoped a place like this would be better suited to containing that sort of thing if it's supposed to be a prison for those the wardens deem "unsafe."

[ the slight sneer in her voice should say how highly she thinks of this rehabilitation effort. ]

Perhaps I'll look into it in a few days, once I've better acquainted myself with how things are run here.

You'd think so. But unless things get truly out of control the wardens seem to do little to intervene. It's almost like the system doesn't want us to ever get out or something.

[There's some sarcasm to her voice. Faith in the wardens is not something Rebekah has.]

It's worth exploring, if nothing else.

Or that they preferred for something to happen to us. Shorten our time here.

[ it's a morbid thought, but she wouldn't be surprised if it were true. she's known people who would pull something like that, hypocrites that they are. ]

Indeed.

[ she pauses for a moment, wanting to find out more about her current companion, but knowing that were the tables turned, she wouldn't want to offer up much of herself to a complete stranger. ]

I hope the days are as normal and relatively harmless as possible despite this. I would imagine it's fairly easy to fall into a routine here.

Always an option as well.

[Basically, she wouldn't be surprised.]

It can be. Still, the place throws surprises at us. A few days ago many of were cursed with our strongest traits being heightened. [For Rebekah it's her ability to love -- and her temper. Needless to say, it had been messy.]

[ it's almost sad that no one she's spoken to yet has a very high opinion of their wardens. ]

Strongest traits? [ her eyebrows slide up her forehead. ] I'd wager that could have ended in what I've heard called a "trainwreck." [ and she is so glad she missed it. ]

To say the least. It was not anything I want to repeat anytime soon.

[Or ever, really.]

Another time they had people haunted by ghosts. Equally unpleasant.

I can't imagine anyone would want to.

[ helen herself would rather opt out of that one. she isn't entirely certain what a place like this would deem her dominant trait and she doesn't really want to find out. ]

...I'm beginning to think our wardens have a stigma against allowing their prisoners to rest. Or they believe it's all a learning experience or a punishment due our supposed crimes.

[ she laughs softly at that. ] Wonderful when the people involved in something agree in their dislike of the higher-ups. That always goes over well.

In any case, perhaps someday we could return the favor. [ she takes a long sip at that. she doesn't expect it to be possible, but doing so would certainly be entertaining. ]

At least it gives us all something to have a sense of camaraderie about.

[She can't help but smirk a little at the thought.]

Perhaps. I find myself very much looking forward to that day.
