[Day 216] [BASEBALL - mingle]
[PLAY BALL!

Or cheerlead.

Or watch.

Or heckle.

It's an event everyone can enjoy!

There are some traditional snacks on hand. No alcohol sadly, but you can still have soda, hot dogs, and popcorn among other things. The bleachers provide enough seating for those who want to see exactly how vampires, humans, demons, mutants, etc. all play together. Not to mention some of them only recently even learned what baseball was. Never a dull moment at least.

In the end, it's the Flying Knights who win in this fairly evenly matched game, but there was some impressive action for both teams It should be an interesting season.]

(OOC: MINGLE! This is event style! Just put in your header whether your character is in the crowd, the purple dragons, the flying knights, cheerleading, before the game, or after the game or any combination! Please assume there was adequate IC announcement of this event!

Backdated to earlier in the day. Roster. It is not yet updated with recent additions from the last Yuuri post.)

[Just about any time is a good time to catch up, especially when they share the same reason and disinterest in the game. It leaves plenty of room for chit-chat.

He looks up at the familiar voice and gives a small smile before turning his eyes to the field. He may not care about the game but there's something fond in his eyes. That's his boyfriend out there, giving it his all.
]

Yeah. Number [Insert jersey number here.].

Lemme guess, you're here for Kitty and tall, dark and buff over there.

I wouldn't put it that way, but... yeah, that's why I'm here. [ Bit of an awkward smile. Things are still weird with Morgan and he can't quite shake that. ] Are you a baseball fan?

Not in the slightest.

You?

[ He makes an amused noise, as if the very notion is ridiculous. ] Not really... not much of a sports guy, to tell you the truth. I did coach the basketball team in high school for a while.

You coached? What made you want to do that?

It seemed like a good way to get on the jock's good side for once. Besides, I was pretty good at it. [ Never mind that he graduated high school age 12. ]

They did once they realized it'd give them a better chance of winning.

Huh, and they say Jocks are stupid.

[And generally stubborn when it comes to the target of their bullying. Not that he'd know of course, just from what he gathered from others, or movies and stuff.]

So they didn't give you anymore trouble after that?

[ He shakes his head. ] Not as much as before, anyway. I graduated not long after.

What about you? Did you ever do any sports? [ He only said he wasn't a baseball fan and considering how athletic he looks... ]

Well... there is the ring fights, which were illegal so I'm not sure if they count but it was a competition.

I raced some. Built my own Scarper for it and everything.

I'd say that counts. Sports are sports. [ Oh hey, that sounds deliciously sci-fi. ] Scarper?

Yeah, they're uh... [How describe them... OH! He had been flipping through some books and magazines from earth to try and find something similar that he could maybe build from.]

They're like a motorcycle from Earth but... they fly, or hover, whichever you prefer. We're talking splatter-you-all-over-the-wall-if-you-fail-miserably-at-driving kind of speed. Part of the prerequisite is to build and modify your own, make it unique while staying within regulation. Or knowing how to use loopholes and get away with shit, as most riders did.

[If Reid is A Star Wars fan he may first think of the swoop bikes from the newer movies. Or with his knowledge he may know the roots of the word Scarper]

[ Scarper isn't the most uncommon word in the English language, so he's picking up on the meaning quite well. ]

From the italian scappere, meaning to flee in great haste. [ Actually... ] That sounds kind of familiar, actually. The, uh... general concept, I mean.

In a movie?

[That's curiosity there. Their Sci-Fi is of a different flavor so he's trying to picture this from the view of someone from a less advanced world. ]

The built one for it or..? [Tell him about this movie.]

What was the movie about?

[info]thisiscalm

Actually, it was six movies as well as an expanded universe in the form of books, video games and animation — the franchise portrays a galaxy that is described as far, far away in the distant past. It commonly portrays Jedi as a representation of good, in conflict with the Sith, their evil counterpart. Their weapon of choice, the lightsaber, is commonly recognized in popular culture. The fictional universe also contains many themes, especially influences of philosophy and religion.

[His brows raise.]

Man, sounds like people must have really liked it. [It does sound really kind of interesting. A little, weird being a sci-fi movie about a place far away in the past but that just piques his interest more in how they handled it. Plus, it'd be interesting to see how another world handles aliens or futurey things.]

And you seem to know a lot about it. [Not that he's surprised that Reid knows a lot about something.]

Are you a fan?

It's considered the greatest sci-fi epos of all time... though that's debatable, of course. It's certainly left a lasting mark on popular culture in any case.

[ He knows so many things, Helix. So many. ]

You could say that I'm a fan — I prefer Star Trek, though.

It's a TV show — actually, it's a lot more than that. The original series followed the interstellar adventures of James T. Kirk and the crew of an exploration vessel of a 23rd century galactic "United Federation of Planets" — the Starship Enterprise. It ran from 1966 to 1969 and was followed by five other tv series set in the same universe, ten feature films — not counting the reboot, of course, which brings it to eleven — books, comics, games, figurines... pretty much anything you can imagine. There was even a Star Trek theme park in Las Vegas, but it got shut down in 2008.

[ To his own great dismay. ]

Star Trek is noted for its influence on the world outside of science fiction. It has been cited as an inspiration for several technological inventions such as the cell phone. Moreover, the show is noted for its progressive civil rights stances — the original series included one of television's first multiracial casts, and the first televised inter-racial kiss. The science involved is relatively accurate as well, which is rare for sci-fi... especially if you take into account that the original series was created in the 60s.

[Most of that kind of goes in one ear and out the other, the years especially cause he doesn't know much about earth culture or history what-so-ever. However he does think the information is kind of cute, that their people drew inspiration from a Sci-Fi show.

What really grabs his attention is the name of the ship.
]

Enterprise? [Pause for thought...] I don't know if you spoke with him but there was a Captain Picard... I think that's what he said his ship was called. And something about the Federation too.
