Class 001 : Day 214 : Ghosts — Woman in White
[Sam looks out over his fellow inmates, now students, wondering—again—if this was a good idea. He wanted to increase his stream of rehabilitation points "income" and this seemed like a plan. Good or not, here he comes. He clears his throat and gives them a smile.]

I should probably start by explaining what this class is about. It's Paranormal Studies which can include a lot of different things, and I'm going to be using my own world and experiences as a base. I know things can work differently in different [Micropause] versions of the world and on different worlds [For all you aliens in the audience.] so we'll talk about that too.

Some of the topics we'll cover might go into sensitive territory. There are people here who might fit into the subject of paranormal activity. That doesn't mean everything I'm going to say will fit those people. If there is one thing I've learned it's that there is always more to know, and life can always surprise you.

This class isn't about hunting. It's about education, and I think we can all learn. You'll probably have a lot to teach me too. [His eyes may linger on a couple of students before he turns around to write, "Ghosts" on the board.]

Overview : Ghosts

Where I'm from some people believe very strongly in ghosts even without ever seeing one, and some people are very sure they're just the stuff of blockbusters and bedtime stories. I know they're real. I've tracked them and when necessary [which is pretty much always, but he's being cautious] I've protected people from them. [By destroying them.]

Ghosts are people—humans—who have died and instead of passing on they stay because something is holding them to the living world. It might be unfinished business like an unsolved murder or someone they are trying to watch over or it could just be stubbornness and sheer force of will. Early on they might not even be dangerous, but years of existing without really living can change them or intensify what's already there.

They can make themselves visible—disappearing and reappearing. Sometimes they look completely alive and sometimes they look like they're in a state of decay or semi transparent. Some might have more control over that than others. They might be able to move objects by touching them or not and even kill people. There are different kinds: poltergeists, vengeful spirits, and the one we'll talk about today.

[ GHOSTS ]

Topic : Woman in White

The woman in white is a type of spirit where a woman is seen—usually dressed in white—maybe to represent purity or innocence. They tend to appear to men and usually have some kind of backstory where they were a victim in life. Maybe they were murdered or maybe it was just bad luck, but whatever it is keeps them locked in a cycle of luring men, sometimes to their deaths.

[ WOMAN IN WHITE ]

Case Study : Constance Welch

Constance Welch was a 24-year-old who drowned after she jumped off a bridge in Jericho, California. [Look at the memory on this one.] On a 911 call before that she claimed her two children drowned in the bath. Actually, she had drowned her own children after finding out her husband had cheated on her.

She spent her afterlife near the bridge she killed herself on. She'd appear to young men and ask them to take her home. They'd take her to the abandoned home she killed her children in and she'd say she could never go home. If they've been unfaithful, she kills them. If they haven't, she tempts them. [Suspicious how he knows all this, right? He even pauses a little at the memory of the ghost on top of him.]

She managed to kill ten men in addition to her two children. [He skips the part about how they killed her in this case. Or at least how they facilitated her death.]

[ CONSTANCE WELCH ]

Practical : Understanding and defense of ghosts

Some things to remember with ghosts is that the air temperature usually lowers when they're around. You might see your breath. It's also common for lights and other devices to flicker on and off. They also give off an electromagnetic reading which can be picked up with an EMF reader.

Ghosts are already dead, but they can be dangerous so it's good to know that iron will repeal them. If you're being attacked you can swing anything made of iron through them and buy yourself some time. You can also make a salt ring to keep them from passing inside it. Rock salt in a shotgun can disperse the ghost for awhile too.

The only permanent method for dealing with them is to find their body, salt it, and burn it. In some cases it gets more complicated, and you have to look for personal items they might have been attached to, but that's probably a lesson for another day. [And this would be that more dangerous territory where he is slipping into hunter mode.]

Questions & Discussion
That was already a lot, so who has questions and who wants to talk about their experiences?

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail, but feel free to bring more into it. He will have additional ghost lectures though, so he wouldn't have gone into detail on poltergeists for example or given multiple case studies.)

[ this is elena all over this post. anyway, she approaches sam sometime after class has wrapped up with a smile. ] So do I call you 'professor' now? Mr. Winchester?

[Congratulations at getting a smile out of him, Ms. Gilbert.] You should probably use professor. Mr. Winchester just shows I didn't get a doctorate.

[ she lets out a quiet huff of a laugh, leans her hip agains the side of his desk. she pauses a moment, and then: ] My mom actually studied folklore and the paranormal. She... wasn't exactly my mom. Biological, but... not much else. [ besides a vampire, and someone who terrorized elena and her loved ones. made friends with katherine, kidnapped jeremy and john... broke ric's heart. and eventually killed herself at klaus' compulsion in front of her. but. ]

[ how to explain the answer to that. ] She... went missing. It turns out she did because [ there's a very small pause here, because it was damon ] she convinced a vampire to turn her. Ric was her husband before he moved to Mystic Falls, but she had me before that, when she was sixteen. I met her when she came to town for her own reasons. [ many reasons, some dangerous. ] It's a... long story. To make it short, she kept the memory of my actual mother perfectly intact.

Elena... [Remember the part where he likes getting details? He still does, but he was not expecting those details. It clicks a few more things into place for him and brings up a battery of new questions which he manages to keep back for now. Single file, guys!]

She had a daughter and wanted to be a vampire? [What kind of mother does that? Even a teen mom.]

[ the kind that didn't want to - couldn't - raise a child. elena's hasn't blamed isobel for that, not when there's plenty greater conflicts to lay at her feet. still and only naturally, there are a few abandonment issues. pain from isobel's cruelty and coldness when elena finally had the chance to meet her.

elena pauses to think how to explain the rest of this -
] My biological father was actually my uncle. He was here a few weeks ago. [ maybe sam talked to him. ] John?

They were both young when Isobel had me. [ but that doesn't make any of it hurt less. she doesn't say it in a tone that justifies their feelings or actions, only states them to conceal her own emotions. ] Uncle John gave me to his brother and his wife - my parents - because... they were trying to have a child.

That's around the time Isobel heard about vampires, from John. My family, the town - it's... tied to some vampire history. When she left me there... she went back to school and... [ elena trails off. the truth is she can't explain why isobel didn't want to be her mother. any mother, to anyone. or why she wanted to be a vampire. ]

[It's hard to get all the answers you want and need out of parents who aren't there or have their own ideas about what you need to know. Sam knows that better than the next person unless the next person happens to be Elena Gilbert and then they get to tie for first place of the everyone I care about dies and I'm left with questions and guilt race. Most people would just stay away from that race let alone win it.]

I met John. We talked briefly. [He could tell Elena was important. He didn't realize the extent of the relationship.]

I'm sorry about your Mom. [He still can't fathom it though. Even at that age who gives up their kid and their life? Their real life for an artificial, addicted one.]

[ elena would rather not be in that race. if not for her sake, then for the sake of the people she loves and just the people around her. she's rather not sam be either - but they are, and maybe it's terrible to feel this way, but she's grateful not to be alone even while experiencing his personal grief and guilt and pain secondhand, from what he's told her.

she nods.
] It's... complicated. [ she calls on the word he used.

though she doesn't call isobel that - her mom. her real mom was miranda gilbert.

and they're also dead - along with john. she's not quite sure how to say that after all of this. she thinks maybe she'll keep it to tell him later. it's a lot - for him, and for her.

[If it's a terrible feeling then they can be terrible together at least.] It sounds like it. [He's quiet for a beat before adding,] Do you ever wonder if you've forgotten what simple is supposed to be like?

I can't. [ she answers after only a beat, her brow furrowing as the idea first occurs to her. that's what gives her pause to think about why. ] I mean, I- I have to remember. If I forget, then how am I supposed to give that to Jeremy? [ her eyes stay on his a moment. it's always about jeremy, and taking care of him, of each other. but it's also about her. elena licks her lips, looks down again. because she understands - she understands how and where and how much the wondering comes in. because mentioning jeremy is saying more about her and how she thinks and what matters to her than anything else. ]

[He nods slowly.] I'm sure you're doing your best, but... [this isn't his place and Jeremy isn't even here and if she returns there's no guarantee she'll even remember this so maybe it doesn't need to be said, but here he is saying it anyway.] You can't let all of that be on your shoulders. [He doesn't know all of what Dean takes on for him, but he knows enough to know it's too much and he'd be fighting a losing battle to work on "normal."]

[ maybe it is a losing battle. the last night she was home, she watched jeremy chop off someone's head. damon had to scrub the porch. they had to send jeremy away. maybe that was wrong, but if it is, then she's wrong and she accepts that, but she would do it again if it meant protecting him from klaus and from what their circumstances have him learn to do. (what they have to do.)

maybe she can't let all of it be on her shoulders. (she's shared it sometimes - with ric, with stefan, with damon...) but... she shakes her head some.
] If not mine, then whose? [ there is no one else. she's what's left for him. ]

[Before he says it, he's pretty sure she's not going to like his answer, but it is the answer of the youngest sibling.] Well...Jeremy's. How much younger is he? [He figures it can't be enough to take all this on herself.]

[ she knows it's the answer of the youngest sibling - she's heard it in different ways from jeremy before. somehow being the oldest does make it a hard answer to like. but elena's not unreasonable (not entirely when it comes to jeremy, just sometimes in practice) and this is sam. so she answers. ] He's sixteen.

[ she knows he means hunting things. still, she knows sixteen-year-olds, particularly sixteen-year-old boys. she lets out a 'heh', breaks some the graveness of the conversation with a slight smile. reaches to tuck some of her hair back. ] I probably shouldn't tell you either. [ it's slightly strained, because it's not all a lightly veiled joke.

a lot happened to her when she was sixteen. a lot since then too.
]

Look, I know... he's not a kid anymore, but that doesn't mean he's not family, or that he doesn't need somebody to look after him. [ she thinks of jeremy, and what he's done and tried to do for her too. ] Maybe we both need that.
